Nerd Alert (Part Deux)

Last time I did this, we looked at the Redskins' O-line, today, horror of horrors, we are going to look at the D-line. It ain't pretty, kids. Better put the wife and kids to bed first...

Most, if not all of these stats are courtesy of Footballoutsiders.com.

Let's look at RB yards gained first. On average, we suck. 5.04 ypc, worst in the NFL. Only the Colts at 5.01 are above 5 ypc also. The leader in the NFL (also the only team under 3 ypc)? Pitt, at 2.92 ypc. Yikes. Let's change focus quickly to something else...

...how about the one encouraging stat, Power Attempts? In the words of Football Outsiders, Power Attempts are

Percentage of runs on third or fourth down, two yards or less to go, that achieved a first down or touchdown. Also includes runs on first-and-goal or second-and-goal from the two-yard line or closer. This is the only statistic on this page that includes quarterbacks.

We are at a very solid, even very good 50%. Only six teams in the NFL are better. This would lead one to assume that in obvious rush situations, we put our best package in, including Haynesworth (?) and they get the job done.

Let's take a moment and enjoy that. 7th in the league ain't bad.

OK, moving onto Stuffed Runs, where the running back in tackled for a loss or behind the LOS. Yeah. Not so great here, coming in at 22nd in the league with 18%. So 82% of the time, teams make positive yardage on us through the run game. Moving right along.

I'm going to combine the next two stats and not even really give them to you because they're just too depressing. We are last in the league and next to last at 2nd level runs and open field runs. We give up more long runs that anyone.

Well, our new aggressive, attacking defense must be producing lots of sacks, right? Eh, no. 20 so far on the year, good for 27th in the NFL. 5% of the time an opposing QB drops back, we get a sack.

So who in particular are other teams running at and why? When they run Left End (against our RE), they are getting 4.24 ypc; Left Tackle (against our RE), they are getting 5.67; Up the middle or behind either Guard, they get 4.08 ypc; Right Tackle (against our LE), they get 4.70; and Right End (against our LE), they get 4.53.

Obviously the 5.67 jumps out at you, and it should. That is worst in the league. By more than .3 ypc (next worst is CHI at 5.34). I know I have seen Golston line up on the right, and believe I have seen Holliday also. Anyone else?

What does all this tell us? That our line isn't very good right now. But that maybe they could be? If the line can "get up" for the important 3rd down plays and make stops half the time, why can't they do it on routine plays? As others have noted elsewhere, the switch to a 3-4 defense has been, ummm... difficult. The discouraging thing is that in every single statistical category I cited for this year (runs stuffed, Power runs, 2nd level, open field, sacks), we were ranked in the top 15. And in overall YPC, we were ranked #1.

That sucks.

Someone tell me it will get better. Please.

Or, just beat the Vikings. Then I will have something funny to talk about. I mean, lots of penis jokes to make, right? (Brett Favre AND Visanthe Shiancoe) That could be funny. Right? RIGHT?
