Finally! The Lunch Thread!

I used to work in Rockville, so I'm tempted to drive back up there to some of these restaurants.........................................until I remember all the road construction going on close to the Legion bridge and where the toll road meets 495. I drove the beltway for 40 years during rush hour traffic, so I get hives nowadays when I get stuck on it.
 
The construction and traffic on the VA side of the legion bridge is ridiculous. And it's been going on for YEARS. Maybe decades! From Ashburn, you could take Georgetown Pike Rt 193 from Rt 7 to the beltway which usually moves along nicely. And it's a pretty drive.

Yeppers, I did Georgetown Pike many times. Nice road until you get behind a school bus. The only way to deal with the beltway was to be on it before 5am.

I'm gonna tell you a secret. Normally I would not share this because I don't want a run on these tomatoes, but I'm not worried because I know zero people from BGO will respond to this.

The best tomatoes in the DMV are at Hines Garden on Muncaster Rd. in Derwood.

The tomatoes are absolutely outstanding. They are everything you want in an August tomato. Just ask the guy, "Which is your best BLT tomato?", and he will tell you. Then you buy it, you go home, make a BLT, and your mind will be blown. We actually went to Hines twice in two days. But know Hines is only open on weekends.

Naturally, you don't want to take chances with the other ingredients. We deliberately bought Oscar Mayer bacon because Oscar Mayer is the best - the bacon always crisps up perfectly. I like a nice Italian bread such as Maier's, and a crunchy sweet lettuce such as iceberg or romaine. I like Hellman's mayo. Salt & pepper on the tomato.

Two bites and you will likely drop to your knees and just start weeping. That's how good these tomatoes are.

DLSF and I each had a sandwich, and it was so good, we had to make another half each. The third photo is the third sandwich with a double layer of tomato.

I'm not motivated enough to drive that far 😁 but would stop if I was in the neighborhood. I've been eating a lot of tomato sandwiches out of our garden. They're so good that I hate to add bacon, or lettuce. Just a thick slice on white bread slathered with Duke's mayo and lots of pepper.....
 
I cannot abide wasting food. Leftover bread, the last bit of fresh mozzarella, a little basil from the garden drizzled with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and half a thin sliced pork chop.

And your drive about 2 miles from my house as you go through great falls!

Time of day is important for GTP. But it wrong and it backs up. Middle of day is ok. Otherwise it can turn into a mess.
 
my lunch today consisted of a nutragrain bar and 2 mini snickers bars from our office kitchen.

Others people’s lunches look better than mine.

My brother in law lives in Sterling - we visit him sometimes, always on a weekend. Takes 50 minutes from my house. But yeah, it's a very nice pretty drive. We've never had horrible traffic on the weekend. :D

I'm more familiar with the Maryland side of Great Falls. We used to ride our bikes to the park there when we were kids. When I got older, we'd ride our bikes from Great Falls down to Georgetown on the C & O Canal. We'd eat pizza at Geppetto, or keep riding just past the White House and have lunch on the rooftop restaurant of Hotel Washington.

Cheez-its and a Kind granola bar today. From our office kitchen. Eaten while finishing this morning's coffee which I didn't get around to...

Though, I did go to Matchbox (it's in my office complex) and got a lovely apple pecan salad with some very ok shrimp and grits for their lunch special of $17 on Wednesday. Good deal.
 
Best shrimp n grits is at Bubba's (Paula Deen's son's restaurant on Wilmington Island, GA.) There are all kinds of seafood shops that sell their own version of the mix, just add shrimp. One of my favorite meals.

I rode GTP in the afternoons to get me home from Rockville. I took the Greenway in the mornings to beat the traffic but coming home was a nice leisurely ride through Great Falls. Nice ride if you don't get behind a school bus.

It can really back up at Walker right at the village. I’ve gotten stuck in that mess during rush hour for 30 minutes.
 
Made Cubanos a couple weeks ago while DLSF was here. Made them on the Chud Press. Had to use up that pulled pork. The bread is actually ciabatta from Panera. It works pretty well. At this point, I'd say my Reuben and a Cubano are my two favorite sandwiches. Not sure which I like more. They are both great!

But if it's August, I'd go with a BLT or even a tomato sandwich.

^^^You do know that was owned by the 999-guy, Herman Cain, who said COVID wasn't real...then died of COVID, right?

He was also the head of the National Restaurant Association who conspired to make sure servers' minimum wage would stay at $2.13/hr? Meanwhile, cooks get paid even if there's no one in the restaurant. Totally unfair.

(Not being political, but there are just things I can't get past.)
 
I hadn't heard of either of those although I try to stay disconnected from those things.

Godfather's pizza takes me back to some great HS days is all.
