Official Game Thread - Week 1 - Giants @ Commanders

The PDSISD (Post Dan Snyder Induced Stress Disorder) is in full effect. We had a great year last year--so naturally, it's going to come all crashing down, and we will know nothing but sadness. It's a hard idea to shake, given it's what we've known for a quarter century. Due to that, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if we laid a big fat egg and lost.

I think people in the media want the Giants to be good--it's New York, the epicenter of the Sports Universe (despite not having won a major title in 14 years, even with 2-3 teams in every major league). I watched the PFF prediction--there wasn't much analysis there--and I read PFF a lot. They barely mentioned the terrible Giants OL--but said ours was still a question? They said the Commanders are worse than last year? How so? They glazed the Giants DL for about 90% of it. It just seemed like they were sold on the Giants being a good team. Maybe that's just me. They did, however, caveat their whole premise with they might be over-reacting. We'll see--I both love and hate Week 1.

(Side note: I think Simms is a complete dipshit--He has two major strikes against him: He buttons his top button without a tie and he works for PFT.)

Yeah the Giants are sort of a sneaky national media darling whenever they show some glimpses of possible success. It's nauseating. And they are definitiely the wow has everything changed team from this off season via some in the national media. And while I don't dismiss it. I also think the celebration is a bit premature. It's been interesting to listen to the Giants beat guys this week -- some seem to have caught the off season vibe fever and others seem measured.

As far as my own optimism radar, its high. It's not high for the Sunday but I even go as far as saying at worse case a loss might generate that chip on their shoulder edge they might need to regain to go the full distance

I suspect but of course don't know that they might have some hangover from last season. There is something about having success but just coming a little short (see teams that go to the SB and lose) that for whatever reason tends to have a hangover effect on the next season. And I don't think it lingers for the whole season. But its something they might be an issue in the first game or two. Will see.

That's cool. And i mean this light hearted back. And this probably the last time i repeat my point. Because I think the making fun of my point, while is cool, has unintentionally presented a strawman argument,

Boone summed it well, there are good arguments for either approach in the pre season. I don't mind the counter argument. I get it. Be fresh. Avoid injuries. But the argument to play your starters more, isn't loony, no matter how much some want to poke fun at it. ;)

My point wasn't about the preseason alone. That's the crux of my point which is that its multiple reasons. Like any game, its multiple factors not just that one. But again to explain the preseason. It's not that our starters didn't play much. It's the juxtaposition that the Giants starters played plenty. And its not about all the starters but specifically the QB and WRs -- especially the QB.

So the fact that Hurts for example didn't play in the preseason. And also Dak didn't play. it starts equal. Also as to the Eagles specifically with that team's talent, I'd bet on them coming in cold in week 5 against whomever and winning let alone not playing in the preseason. So the point isn't an all emcompassing one. Depends on the matchup. I don't think this team is that much better than the Giants, that little edges make no difference.

If it was purely about the preseason though, I'd be picking Washington. So if people want to make the argument that my point is just about the preseason. I am with you. I'd make fun of me on that, too. But I didn't say that. I said its that AND...

A. O line needing to gel. Conerly's first game. Coleman's first at LG. It takes time typically. And they are facing quite a test to gel quickly
B. The outside Wrs missing camp-preseason. Burrow talked about not having Chase in camp last year hindered their early season chemistry
C. The outside WRs likely on a pitch count -- who backs up the outside WRs? We got really backup slot Wrs who don't major in playing in X or Z
D. I wonder about this team's hunger (this is a pure guess based on interviews-clippings) playing a team that they should beat -- Bram saying it was a low energy camp, etc. Giants come off hungry. I got that same vibe before the infamous loss in 2016 season. I'd ironically feel better if they were playing a bigger team where the motivation would happen more organically.
E. Giants just seem to have our number more than they should. At a minimum they seem to believe that they can beat us. Dallas and Phlly for example just whip them every season, I'd gather when they play those teams they don't come with swagger. They tend to play us with swagger.
F. Wilson isn't hot but he can throw the deep ball. Love what i've read about Amos and what I've seen in camp. But rookie CBs (including Sainristill) tend to struggle early. And Lattimore is a wildcard.

ANY game win or lose as to the matchup, I am rarely focused on just one thing. It's multiple variable things. it's context. Rarely for me to feel that one variable applies to every team-every match up. I am talking specfically about this one. And none of this is a whit of criticism towards Quinn. I got no idea if this approach is good or not over the long haul of the season. Strong arguments for either side on it. But specifically to this game, I do feel its ONE of a number of variables. Any of these variables taken alone could be made fun of if its framed as my plotline of why I am worried about this game. But for me its the combination of all of them. Not just one of them.

And with all of that if Thomas doesn't play, I think Washington wins.

I really didn't mean it as an actual piece of an argument or point I was trying to make.

As much as we want to ignore the massive point disparity from our pre-season and the Giants pre-season, the fact remains that it was a shockingly wide gulf between the two teams. For all we know this doesn't matter Week 1, or Week 4, but by Week 8 if our teams depth is starting to look a little like the pre-season depth, ooo boy. That's going to be painful. So think of my joke more as humor to push fears down of this team starting slow. In our first 5 games, we play against 3 possible playoff teams. Packers, Falcons, and Chargers. Everyone knows our schedule is tough. A slow start similar to what the Bengals have done for years could be too big of a hole to climb out of.

The only thing I want to counter is the teams hunger level. The lack of over the top emotions that beatwriters and the like have talked about might just be a recurring theme because we have Jayden Daniels. Teams often feed off energy from the leaders, and Jayden Daniels at QB is not a common leader. Everyone likes him, but he's not fiery and he doesn't get heated. This has resulted in moments that are not too big for him and he's got ice in his veins in clutch moments. Yet, even the main backup QB in Mariota is known for not being a fiery guy that pushes/yells as a form of leadership.

Sample size is just 1 pre-season followed by 1 regular season. So we've barely got any datapoints here. We just finished the 2nd pre-season with a complete unknown of how we'll come out of the gate for the 2nd season. Maybe Jayden Daniels leadership style is uncommon at QB (commonly said so by all of his teammates) but still just plain works. I know the 2nd Giants game it gets mentioned as part of a slower start as we had to win through Field Goals, but the offense still did not punt that game. It was working with high consistency at driving down the field.

All I'm saying about lack of fire/passion is that we have an unusual (in a good way) leader at QB, and that we simply lack data to know if that'll reflects into perceived hunger levels for pre-season.

I think they can surivive an 0-2 start. I don't see them losing this Sunday if it happened as the end of the world. When you watch the America's Game SB special about SB teams, its often about an unexpected or bad loss that they attribute to galvanzie the team to get their edge. Heck the Eagles talked about their 2-2 start, starting slow is what propelled them. Barkley this off season talked about their loss to Washington as what got him and the team stirred up for the championship game.

So in a wacky way, the oh no, we started 0-2, how are we going to recover in a tough schedule season might be just what the doctor ordered. Not that I am rooting for that to happen. But it will be shrug for me if it did. The local-national media might panic and write the team off early but that's irrelevant.

As for them having their edge or not. I am guessing. You are guessing. There are enough crumbs for me to worry about it. I'd worry about it less if they were playing a big time team. But playing the Giants, for the same reason that almost everyone on this thread are dismissing the Giants chances, is part of the reason why I am concerned about whether they got the edge-underdog vibe taking on this opponent that they had for so much of last season. But again, i think the quickest way for them to regain that edge is to lose in an upset. So if that happens again, not the end of the world, it could be losing a battle to win the war.

I go no doubt Daniels is fired up. But he's not everyone. And look I don't think any team intends to play flat. It just tends to happen organically from time to time. I commented on ES about the Tampa game last year when I was sitting above the sidelines and felt that the sidelines looked low energy. Some of it often is based on what happens early in the game. In that game they got behind and they just looked to my eyes demoralized.

But again, its about multiple reasons -- motivation is my wildest guess among those reasons -- the other variables I listed feel more important.

The Giants Cowboys and Eagles could all be good or very good teams. Any team in the league could beat us. That’s not the point, the point is this team needs to attack, attack and attack every team in every game and take that away from them. We beat some very good teams last season and we are better now. And I think that will be their attitude. Home team or no, get the hell off my field.

Be the predator not the prey.

Surprising few, Noah is absent from practice today per Keim.

Prep those Lane shares for DFS
DFS?

I think Lane is going to be the third pass catching option this year anyway, maybe not initially, but somewhere down the road. He has speed that you can't teach. And he had a good spring. It will be Terry, Deebo, Ertz, Ekler and Lane as the primary targets by Halloween, assuming health.

A few general points:

1. The National Media, apart from the information exchange folks (Schefter, Rap, whoever), are a bunch of incompetent click bating morons and nobody should care about anything they say about any topic ever. First, they make up for their lack of intelligence with charisma, and they then add they can't keep up with 32 teams anyway, so they all react to "the last thing" without context. Ignore all of them and your life will be better.
2. The Giants were 3-14 last year. They had a good pre-season, but unlike the change we had to go from 4-13 to 12-5, they didn't draft a Jayden Daniels type player. Teams do turn around all the time, but the turn around we had was not usual. It's more often a 6-11 goes to 10-7 or something like that. We should not expect the Giants to go from 3-14 to world beaters in their first game. They should be better than last year, but it's essentially the same coaching staff, and a lot of the same players who went 3-14. They made some upgrades. So did we.
3. We could lose this game. But we shouldn't. We are the better team. With the better QB.
4. The counter to that is the Giants have been our bugaboo for my entire life and often beat us when we are the better team.
5. I don't subscribe to the narrative that because the Giants tried hard and had a good pre-season they are magically better than what they were projected to be before the preseason started. Might they be? Yes. But we'll see.
6. For whoever cares about these things, we have the third best line in Vegas as approximate 6 point favorites. Is Vegas always right? No. I have made a lot of arguments they are often wrong. Only the Eagles and Broncos are bigger favorites than us. We're basically tied with Arizona at 3rd, both with a smattering of 6 or 6.5 point favorites.

I find myself very worried about Noah health...hoping he is 100% and ready but we need deep threats.

Perhaps that's why Bourne is waiting to see how Noah is this week

To your point #2, some around the Giants do indeed feel like they found their Jayden. It's nauseating. lol, I mentioned I had a conversation with my mother in law about it, her telling me the NY media think the Giants finally found that guy and compared to Jayden. Dart had a great preseason, Dak level when Dak came out of nowhere his rookie season. He has good size, strong arm, has wheels. I am hoping all the hype ends up unfounded. I almost puked when I saw that Eisen had a segment about whether Dart is a generational talent. Give me a break. throw a pass in the regular season first, But at a minimum Giants brass seems like they think they got their guy. Fortunately we won't see him game 1. Though I keep reading he could be starting as soon as game 4.

I don't subscribe either that the Giants tried harder in the preseason and that alone is why they are better. It's the hype about Dart who played amazing in the preseason. And the hype that Abdul Carter is the next Parsons. It's lol their version of getting Chase Young and Sam Howell in one off season. And as silly as that sounds now -- in real time plenty of us were hyped about both. That's the buzz around that team. Whether they flop or succeed remains to be seen. But the early indications are they are less likely to bust than Chase and Howell.

Doubtful is big. lol, I don't want to jinx it but the Giants especially suck when Thomas is out.

Still 2 days before the game and already almost 13 pages of posts...this season can't start soon enough!

A way to win big money in DFS is building a team that has a few players who far exceed expectations.... Enter Lane.

Exactly. Well said.

Dictating to the opposition. Led by our hyper hurry up ALL SEASON LONG which carried us right the championship game. On D had a 5th Luvu attacking early and often.

It was painful to watch decades of Redskin football losing big in the 2nd half, and slow playing (which hadn't worked all game) still being the priority. It took 20 years of watching top teams running hurry up before we embraced it. Heck, even tried it. Defenses allowed to sub in fresh pass rushers every damn play if they wanted.

On D, we'd rarely blitz before being backed up in the red zone. Then, easily predictable that we'd do so.
