Finally! The Lunch Thread!

Had a Sunshine Burger for lunch with a buddy yesterday. Friggin' awesome! Ate it at the counter. One of their old cooks/prep people is back from 15-20 years ago and she makes all the difference. She disappeared and went to Tennessee but now she's back. The place was jammed at lunch hour. Standing room only. Just an amazing burger. Used to be cash only but they even take credit cards now. So, strap a saddle to the old grey horse and come on out.

I have the smoked chicken from the weekend. I could just make a chicken sandwich. But we have more avocados from Aldi's. We have a fresh tomato from the garden. But I want my sandwich with avocado AND tomato! So I found this avocado-chicken salad on the internet.

This is called the New Yorker - Big bean. It's got corned beef, pastrami, Swiss & coleslaw on rye with Russian dressing, lettuce, tomato. It's from the Bean Bag Deli on Gude Dr., very close to the Cubano coffee headquarters. This is the second half - I already ate the first. This sandwich weighs in at over one pound. Very delicious.

Yeah, it's a pretty good deli - 4.7 stars on Yelp.
 
I'd have to use a fork to avoid wearing that sandwich, but it looks amazing! (add red onions ;) )

Used to go to the Shirlington Deli A LOT back in the day. They had a “New Yorker” that was pastrami and chopped liver with all the accoutrements. About the same size as your New Yorker, from the looks of it. Was my favorite sandwich from there. Friggin’ LOVED that place!
 
Yeah - apparently there is something about deli sandwiches in New York - they make them huge.
 
DLSF and I got two pizzas from Vace Deli in Bethesda. It was ranked 2nd Best Pizza in the DMV by The Washington Post a few years ago. It's not a fancy pizza really - it's the imported authentic Italian ingredients that sets it apart. The red pizza sauce is bright. Really delicious. Vace is a tiny deli half a block from Wisconsin Ave on Miller Ave. Definitely a take out place - there are no tables. So you're gonna need a place to sit down to eat.

Andy's Pizza was ranked #1 and is more like a sit-down restaurant. Andy's is more of a fancy pizza, I'd say. They're a chain, one location is located a block from Bethesda Metro.

We ate them, part of them, outside at Elm Street Park. Basically, two blocks from Vace, right across Wisconsin Ave. Really nice clean park with picnic tables under cover under a canopy of trees. Hardly anybody knows it exists except a few locals. There was literally nobody there at noon on a Monday. We parked in the lot behind the Montgomery Farm Women's Cooperative Market.

Okay - this is lunch the day before the crab feast. I didn't have the photos from DLSF's phone yet. We went to 2Fifty Texas BBQ in Riverdale. It's the best BBQ place in the DMV. You don't have to take my word for it. But go anyway.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "I can make my own BBQ in my own back yard, why should I drive all the way to Riverdale???"

One good reason is to compare your backyard BBQ with legit Texas BBQ. These guys do a really good job. And you get an array of BBQ choices rather than focusing on one BBQ item. Check it out.

2Fifty Texas BBQ even had an article in the Texas Monthly which is the most prestigious BBQ magazine in the world.

Come early. There's a line out the door and on the sidewalk every day. That should tell you something about the food.

This is the third or fourth time I've been here.

DLSF ordered the "Dino Rib" which is a beef rib sliced from a short rib plate. It is extremely outstanding. And huge. Unbelievably tender. Highly recommended. It's their signature BBQ choice. They also have smoked brisket, of course.

I have had the Dino rib here before - and I just smoked a short rib plate a few weeks ago, and I've had the brisket too, so I got Poblano sausages this time. Poblano is a mexican pepper. It's not a really super hot spicy pepper, it just has a lot of nice interesting flavor. The pepper is mixed into the sausage meat, made into sausages, and then smoked.

We also ordered some "brisket beans." And some potato salad, and DLSF got some kind of smoked pineapple salad thing. We finished it off with banana pudding, made from scratch on site. Of course. Banana pudding is the perfect dessert after eating BBQ.

This is lunch yesterday while the butt was in the drum.

I'm gonna tell you a secret. Normally I would not share this because I don't want a run on these tomatoes, but I'm not worried because I know zero people from BGO will respond to this.

The best tomatoes in the DMV are at Hines Garden on Muncaster Rd. in Derwood.

The tomatoes are absolutely outstanding. They are everything you want in an August tomato. Just ask the guy, "Which is your best BLT tomato?", and he will tell you. Then you buy it, you go home, make a BLT, and your mind will be blown. We actually went to Hines twice in two days. But know Hines is only open on weekends.

Naturally, you don't want to take chances with the other ingredients. We deliberately bought Oscar Mayer bacon because Oscar Mayer is the best - the bacon always crisps up perfectly. I like a nice Italian bread such as Maier's, and a crunchy sweet lettuce such as iceberg or romaine. I like Hellman's mayo. Salt & pepper on the tomato.

Two bites and you will likely drop to your knees and just start weeping. That's how good these tomatoes are.

DLSF and I each had a sandwich, and it was so good, we had to make another half each. The third photo is the third sandwich with a double layer of tomato.
