Water and/or ice really opens up a lot of flavors that are masked by the alcohol, especially in higher proof whiskey. Add water...just a little bit at a time until you like it. Use an eyedropper if you have to, (a couple of the tasting experiences that we attended at distilleries included an eyedropper & a small beaker of water), and add a few drops at a time until you figure out how much you like. A lot of my friends who are scotch drinkers add water, or ice, to their whiskey, regardless of the proof because it opens them up.

Skinsfan knows what he is talking about. At that proof you want to cut it with water probably down to around 100 proof. You are likely missing out on a lot of the nuances in what is no doubt a very complex flavor profile in a whisky that old.

Any martini fans out there? I rarely find myself in a real bar, but when I do, it's one of my go to's.
 
Apparently I was wrong. I was in the garage trying to find my deep fryer and I also found this. Islay single malt scotch.

It's 8am but I had to try it out. Not bad. It might look like a bottle of sesame seed oil but it's real scotch.

We are going to the Philippines in 10 days so I started putting together a collection of beverages to bring. Nothing crazy expensive just because you never know what is going to go missing. Paul's liquor sold me the Eagle Rare for 37.99 so I couldn't resist. My wife is probably going to add some wine, her sister's husband sent a ton of drinks from Belgium in the mail and they recently found out none of it is going to get there before September so we are it.

You are right. The biggest beneficiary of this I've found is Sagamore Barrel select 55% Rye I've had for a year and hated. Drop in an ice cube and it's awesome.
 
Good price and good pick on that Eagle Rare! Way cheaper than around my parts

Imagine how much whiskey that you like could benefit from a little water. I like to pour higher proof whiskey over a large cube and enjoy the way the flavors evolve as the ice slowly melts.

Yeah it's their store pick too so it might be even better than the random bottle I spent 60+ on last year. That lower price is just because I have points with their store and not the regular price of 59.99. Most of their other points bottles are 100+ dollars and I'm not that crazy yet. I did spend 200+ on one of the Barrell bottles but everything else I have is 99 and under.

It's crazy how prices have jumped since some of these have gotten popular. I was buying the ER10 for $20.00 a bottle at a liquor store near Mt Snow in Vermont, about 10 or so years ago. I'd buy it by the case and gift bottles. I don't really care for it but....if you mix it with a splash of Stagg Jr, it's fantastic!

I didn't like it that much either but they will in the Philippines and I'm sure they will like the bottle. It looks kinda American and they love American stuff there, still, unlike some places around the world.

I didn't ever drink whiskey or anything much 10 years ago. I do remember that in the 1990s you could go into the Navy base package store in Japan and buy just about anything they had for like 3-8 dollars a bottle though. Too bad all my ex-wife was trying to buy was nasty 1800 Cuervo, which is now like 40+ dollars but was 6 then. I remember buying Bacardi for 3 and cartons of cigarettes for 2-5, yes CARTONS. Generics were 2-4 Camel's and Marlboros were 5-6.

I can imagine that most of that 50-100 a dollar whiskey now would have been sub 10 bucks then. Mostly 5 or less.

I went into the little package store at Arnold AFB recently and their prices are more for everything than my local store that I drive 10 miles to buy from. Tax free but everything was enough over to make it pointless to buy there. At least for what I know this price for.

Mom & I still make field trips to the PX in Little Creek when I visit. If you know prices, there are great deals to be had...a few years ago they were selling Knob Creek 9 year, Buffalo Trace & Woodford Reserve for $19.95.
What I like about the package store on base is that they tend to have stuff that the local places don't. The tax-free doesn't hurt either.
 
My liquor drinking days are pretty much over, so I doubt I'll spend much time in this thread. I loved my Makers Mark and their 46 but did not like the mornings after. I drink mostly wine nowadays, sorry. Having said that though, it will always be beer and Jello shooters for the games.

Yeah, that AFB wasn't like that at all though. I wish there was some base around here with good liquor prices but Arnold AFB isn't it, at least that time. Maybe it'll be different next time. We get good grocery prices next door there so I will be back for sure.
