2024 - Way too early draft thread

We are all going to hear a bunch of talk about LSU QB Jayden Daniels between now and April. Thought it would be good to see what all the hubbub is about.

 
It’s a weird thing. When I think of the super dominant teams, I don’t know that I think super star wide receiver. I mean KC was fine without Hill. The Pats were fine without Moss. Maybe you look at Deebo with the 49ers, but so many star WRs never lead their team anywhere.

In fairness, the same can probably be said for a lot of positions.
 
Interesting that you post that, Chris. I just finished a session of PT with an LSU guy and we talked about Daniels. He watches every single game, sometimes more than once, and he isn't sure Daniels' game is going to translate to the pro ranks. In fact, he has real doubts about him in the NFL.

Yeah, I don’t have an opinion but he seems to be the flavor of the month, so…

He is going to get dissected and I’m sure whoever the new leadership is, they are going to kick the tires at a minimum. Maybe he is the next RG3 or the next Lamar Jackson, though unlike Jackson his body looks much less stout. I have already heard his name dropped by a plethora of Washington media voices (Sheehan, Paulsen, and Standig being the latest on Ben’s most recent pod), so I thought that at least a look was in order.

KC is 'fine' without Hill, but they have Kelce
San Fran - Deebo Samuel
Cincinnati - Jamar Chase
Miami - Tyreek Hill
Philadelphia - AJ Brown
Buffalo - Stefon Diggs
Dallas - CeeDee Lamb
Detroit - Amon Ra-St Brown


I'm in no way saying the end all be-all is the WR position, but I think it's a bigger testament that there's no single 'right' way, and there's no single 'fix' either.

KC has Mahomes, the ultimate X-factor, as well as a top 5 defense this year.
San Fran is about as well rounded as a team can be that's got playmakers, an all pro OT, and a top tier offensive system
Cincinnati has Burrow and playmakers anchored by Chase, and they made their hay simply winning track meets
Miami is the epitome of a high flying offense with elite playmakers, but the ultimate in rhythm passing and an opportunistic defense
Philadelphia is a bully
Buffalo is under-achieving, but they are at their best when their QB is at his best, creating opportunities for top tier playmakers
Dallas is similar to Miami... just not 'as explosive' with an opportunistic defense.
Detroit is a bit like San Fran...


Most of these teams have an elite receiver to go with their QB, as well as other explosive weapons.

2 of these teams are currently 'known' for it's offensive line, and that's Philly and Detroit. Another (San Fran) has elite pieces, but not necessarily touted as a premier position group as a whole


I'm not saying ignore O-line, just making observations. There has to be a schematic plan in place and it's gotta match the personnel. Thus begs the question, is it more important in year 1 of a rebuild to get the robin to your batman (Marvin Harrison Jr) if you believe he's a 'sure thing' and capable of being in that upper tier of elite? Or do you select Fashanu or Alt as your anchor LT?

Washington won a Super Bowl with a former #8 round pick in Charlie Brown and a waiver wire pickup in Alvin Garrett (Art Monk was hurt in 1982).

Washington also won a Super Bowl with Art Monk, Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders - all having been current or former 1,000 yard receivers in the league.

I don't think there is a single formula.

From what I have seen so far this season Kansas City IS suffering a bit from the lack of talent on the outside.

Yes, Mahomes makes up for a bit of it but the departure of first Hill and then Schuster after a 1,000 yard season last year has left the Chiefs with the Toneys, Moores and Hardmans of the world.

I think it is a reason the Chiefs came up a bit short in a couple of games this year and lead to the 8-4 record.

Philly was able to shut out the Chiefs in the second half of their Monday night game because the KC wide receivers dropped one touchdown pass and failed to get open at critical times in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes and Kelce still make the offense productive but no one on the outside scares you.

And I think KC is not likely to be a repeat champion in 2023 as a result.
 
BPA is fine - theoretically. But there are times when you've simply got glaring needs you have to address sooner rather than later. If we don't get this OL overhauled (and I'm talking major attention with top draft picks at some spots) Sam Howell won't survive to find out what his ceiling is. We have a ton of WR talent and if we get some actual pass protection we might find out just how good it is. It's very rare that a WR contributes enough to warrant that high a draft pick. If we go MH he'd better be the 2nd coming of his father.
 
I agree. If you draft a quarterback at #5 you still have to build an offensive line, get a tight end and then figure out if the WR talent is sufficient.

Gruden's comments on WFAN seem to indicate the wide receivers were worked by the Miami corners in that last game and didn't present Sam with reliable open targets.

And let's not forget you have to build almost an entire defense from the ground up. Underperforming veterans and over-drafted picks need to be moved out.

And the irony I can see at qb in that scenario?

When that #1 pick is throwing interceptions for pick sixes and fumbling on strip sacks, the fans and media that are so hard on Howell in his 12 starts will be preaching patience for the 22 year old passer because he's our franchise quarterback:rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Yep, that's why Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Bryce Young and a host of other top draft picks have been able to hit the ground running :p

I think we did okay on the bye. The Bears and Jets winning both help.
 
When you're terrible and your entire Coaching staff should have been replaced months ago and will be in months (weeks?), every player is expendable. You simply don't let players like Jayden Smith or Michael Penix go by without a hard, hard look. The guys screaming for offensive lineman aren't necessarily wrong, but this staff is soooooo bad, we aren't getting a true representation of ability at any position.
 
Well, the bye was very good to us if you want that higher pick. Titans blew it, but otherwise...
 
The Giants just won and now have 5 wins. So that's one less team with 4 wins.
