There might be the possibility of not wanting to break him down too much for health reasons....

Peyton Barber is basically there to get hit so the more dynamic guy doesn't. Because, boy does Peyton Barber suck anywhere but goal line or what. Because if Harbor Freight made a Chinesium battering ram, Peyton Barber is the football equivalent of that.
 
I'm gonna push back on the 'Barber sucks' thing. Casually mentioning 'except for short yardage' knowing how critical it is to be able to pound it for a couple yards when the opponent knows you are going to do it and you have to have that yard or two. Barber was short on one of those 3rd down opportunities last night, but honestly, that may have been the first time he DIDN'T get the 3rd down this season with the ball in his hands. He also had some nice mid-range runs last night. He's just not a guy who's got the speed or moves to make a lot of guys miss. But when you need his skill set, he's as good as anyone in the NFL in short yardage situations.

I agree

At the beginning of the season i was frustrated that we let AP walk and kept Barber on the roster. I still have those feelings, but Barber has done what he's been asked to do. On multiple occasions when we've needed 2, he's gotten us what we need. He's not an every down back, and he's not a game breaker. Never will be.

The 49ers still have a "real" defensive front even if it is their backups.
If I want a back for short-yardage, I would like someone with more powerful "sustain" after contact. Someone with the strength of a young Zeke or Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
 
Unlike McKissic and Gibson, I don't see Barber as being on the roster for more than a season or two. He's a role player and probably a temporary one - but he's pretty damn good at his role. Doesn't preclude a future upgrade, but I think it's hard to argue he's not getting the job done so far. Just my opinion.

Just as an aside, we were all looking at the 'keep AP or cut him' discussion as a choice between AP and Barber. But I think because they value Barber's short yardage ability so much, he was always going to be on this roster. It would've been McKissic or Gibson whose time AP would've taken up had they kept him, and that's why they decided it was better to find out what they had in those two guys than to get one more season out of AP.

On the Chase Young fumble return, anyone else flash back to Sean Taylor? I immediately thought of that and I heard Ryan Clark say the same thing.

This is what I was talking about with the defense... Curl is playing for real, and it's exciting... Nobody is crediting Curl with this play, but he has as much to do with it as anyone else.
