No, you can get a CC in California regardless. There doesn't have to be a state-approved "legitimate" reason.

But yes, like Boone said, it's up to the sheriff...and the sheriff's my neighbor, so he better approve my family! :)

Plus, you lived in this area Mike, it's pretty pro-gun. ;)

Anyway, from what I understand, our sheriff is basically looking for a record, whether you're a responsible citizen and whether or not you've taken the appropriate training.

Definitely agree our state laws are stupid when it comes to firearms. Fortunately small, rural, red counties and their sheriffs are usually happy to have more responsible citizens carrying.

Couldn't find the 9+1 when I bought this one. And my ignorant state wouldn't allow me to purchase the 12+1.
However, the state supreme court just sent the assault ban and magazine restrictions back to the lower court. Hoping they ultimately strike down the uselessly ignorant restrictions.
 
Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Hopefully it will turn out as it should, and the bans will be removed.

Wow - that LCP is tiny. May have one in my future. I'm also looking at several of the Springfields which look pretty nice as well.
 
What do you guys think of the Ruger LCR series?
 
You won't see many carry revolvers for concealed carry purposes for the simple reason they are by definition hard to conceal. On the other hand, a revolver is incapable of jamming, so that's a pretty big advantage. For a woman, if you carry a purse, a revolver might make perfect sense. If I was going to get a revolver to carry in a purse, I probably wouldn't go with the smallest one available. I have never fired an LCR but they are very light, and they offer one with a laser sight built in (which is a very nice option for after dark). They are available in a variety of calibers including my favorite, .357.
 
I don't think you could go wrong with the LCR. Nice and light plus it is hammerless which will help keep it from catching on things should you need it.

I was pretty set on the Springfield XD Mod.2. I was impressed with all the reviews I looked at. When I handled one though I just didn't like the way it fit my hand and ultimately decided on the Shield.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I wasn't thinking revolver at first, but our law enforcement friend recommended it and I found out that's what both my female coworkers have. One got one with the laser option, my other friend didn't but wishes she did. If that's what I end up going with, I'll definitely get the laser.

But yeah, John, the reason it was recommended was because it'll fit into my small purse and I'm not going to run into a potential problem with it jamming. Why do you prefer the .357?
 
I prefer bigger caliber over smaller caliber for concealed carry. Most concealed carry pistols are 9mm. Don't get me wrong - taking a 9mm slug would get anyone's attention, and can kill. But a .357 or 40 cal slug is going to end the debate right away. Good arguments for a revolver for you.

Whelp, just purchased my first firearm. Now I'm in the lovely California 10-day waiting period.

Ended up going with the Ruger LCR .357 Magnum (John, my dad agreed with you about the caliber...he too, wants me to end the discussion if I'm ever in a situation that needs a gun).

Will be spending lots of time at the shooting range and taking lessons and hope to be taking my CCW class and applying for my permit in April or May.

Sidenote: I'm really relieved to be taking this step. Owning a gun is something I've always thought about, but I've just never had the impetus to do. But, being on my own as a single woman in her mid-30's, I feel like I am really taking control of all aspects of my life now. I've always just focused on my career and been of the mindset that I'd have a partner who'd take care of that "guy stuff." The older I get, the more I just want to ensure I am capable of doing everything on my own and am not defenseless, especially as the crime rate is skyrocketing in my hometown.

Went to Cabellas yesterday and was soooo close to buying an 1873 model 45 colt. Need a bear deterrent and just love the look of these walnut handled beauties.

Okay change of plans, ended up passing on the Colt 45. Instead went with upgrades to what I already have. Not cheap ($56.00 per 20) but definitely worth it imho. 200 grain 45 ACP "penetrator" rounds!

Goes roughly 18" in soft tissue, with a larger wound than a hollow point. Basically I can carry these fishing and feel comfortable around Yogi.

Depending on your area it should be either Lehigh or Underwood brand.
