Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Knight: that's a stretch. I think the offense has played well in spurts...but it hasn't dominated ANYONE. lest we forget...even the Tampa game.....it was 3 & out several times in a row at the start of the game while Tampa marched up & down the field. it has had to work for everything and it has received help along the way (timely penalties by the opposition, turn-overs from the defense, etc.).

better than the last couple years. you bet! encouraging at time? you bet. progress? you bet. enough to be enthused about? yea...pretty much.

dominating?....ummmmm....no.

I wasn't talking about dominating teams for whole games Fan. And I wasn't just talking about Offense. The Tampa game is a case in point. We were shocking in the first half, but in the second (and a few mins before halftime!) we outscored them 31-6. We controlled the clock and our defense took them off the field repeatedly, while our offense scored almost at will.

From about midway through the 2nd Quarter they went: Punt/End of Half/Punt/FG/Onside Kick Loss/FG/Fumble

Our Defense and Special Teams stepped up.

Meanwhile we went: TD/Punt/TD/TD/FG/TD

Which is a pretty dominating stretch of play. What else would you call it? WE controlled every phase of the game, Offense, Defense and Special Teams.

We're they a good team? No. Could we do that to the Pats? I doubt it.

But there have been games this year where I've sat and thought "Damn we're in control here!"... usually followed my a "Here we go again!" moment.

I dunno, maybe dominating it a strong word. But we did shut those teams out for whole halves before letting them back in. In those games we did pretty much force our will on them for the half. Might not have run up huge scores, but we didn't allow them to score either. And when you look at the Time of Possession in some of those games too... Stopping them scoring on defense and controlling the clock on offense and putting points up on the board.

If you don't want to use the word dominated then maybe 'Controlled' is a better word.

Either way we've done it.

On the flip side... we've allowed ourselves to be controlled/dominated too. And as I said, usually in the same game! LOL

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying we're on the verge of being the best team in the League, not by a looooooooong stretch. But we've shown in spurts what we can be capable of. Just need to string those spurts together consistently and I think we can be a team in the upper half of the league.

Currently I think ESPN had the Skins ranked 23rd or something. And I think that's a pretty fair assessment, maybe even a tad generous considering our up and down nature.

But if we could really put some consistency in our games and start putting together all the pieces then I think we could be top 15. We'll need a talent upgrade at a bunch of positions to go further than that though.

Don't be trying to derail the thread back on topic. ;)

Reading Rich Tandler this morning on Real Redskins and he was talking about the Starters this year who are Free Agents next year. Cousins is of course one of them.

This is what he had to say on the topic:

QB Kirk Cousins (age 28 at start of 2016 season, 2015 cap number $778,000)—This could be huge or it could be almost an afterthought, depending on how Cousins plays in the remaining nine games. If his performance is good enough to warrant starter status in 2015, he could get a deal something like Nick Foles’ extension with the Rams. In August, Foles, who was going into the final year of his rookie contract, signed for two years and $24.5 million in new money. $12 million is guaranteed and, in reality, that is the total value of the deal. There is no guaranteed money in the final year of the deal so the Rams could easily cut ties after 2016 with minimal cap pain. Cousins could get something similar if the Redskins want him to be their starter next year.

Also in a seperate article by him... this:

But if things were calm and stable, and certain I wouldn’t be putting casino chips on future events. So let’s go with an imaginary $100 in casino chips to lay down on the possible outcomes.

Cousins is slated to be an unrestricted free agent next year so “cut him” is not an option.

Let him walk—$10 This would mean letting him go without a contract offer or one that is such a lowball deal that he would be a fool to accept it. It would take about seven or eight “bad Kirk” performances in the last 11 games with maybe a couple of “horrible Kirk” games that we haven’t see this year but are in his past (see Thursday night vs. Giants in 2014).

Bring him back on a short-term deal—$65 I’m doing a post later today on free agents and I’ll go into what a deal like this might look like. It would be something that would tie Cousins to the team for the two years with perhaps a third-year option. This would be the scenario of Cousins continues to go along about like he has, mixing some good games with some that show that he is still a work in progress. The team likely would bring in some competition for Cousins if they take a wait and see stance such as this.

Bring him back on a long-term deal—$20 If you’ve been following along here, you can probably figure out that this is what happens if he copies and pastes the Bucs game several more times this year and cures the interception bug so that his lows are not nearly as low. The Redskins somehow sneaking into the playoffs in a weak NFC East and winning a home playoff game would help. This would be a four- or five-year deal worth something in the $15-$17 million range with escalators to bump his pay up if he exceeds expectations and escape hatches for the team to get out of it if he underperforms the deal.

Franchise tag—$5 This is worth a flyer because crazy things happen in the NFL. This would take Cousins hoisting the Lombardi Trophy and driving off the new car as the MVP. I’d probably go a little lower than five bucks this but this casino doesn’t do $1 chips.

I've been thinking along these lines myself.

Hehe, I love that last comment about the Franchise tag. Made me chuckle.

Comments?

The way the defense seems to be regressing, Kirk may be passing a whole lot more in the coming weeks. Just one more factor Scot and Jay will have to consider in assessing where we are at QB heading into next year.

Okay.

Point was I have a feeling we'll be playing catch-up more as the season goes along because we seem to be slipping badly on defense.

Agreed!

Here's another interesting tidbit from my journey around the sporting websites this morning...

Greg Garber on ESPN is proposing a trade with the Bears. Cousins for Cutler.

Linky!

Comments?

Personally I'd stick with Cousins. I haven't seen anything from Cutler lately that makes me think he'd be any better for us that what we have.

They're also on the field a lot. The d needs to rest like everyone else to stay fiery

I'm proposing a trade too. McCoy for Brady. About the same logic and likelihood :)

Is the D on the field a lot? Maybe recently but I'm pretty sure we have dominated TOP in most of our games this year. That's just my sense - maybe the numbers don't bare that out....

Cutler's a head case. And getting old. No thanks.

We were a TOP monster early on, but are slipping in that too. It's not all on one side of the ball or the other, it's both. The offense is slipping because we can't run the ball, and the defense seems to be unable to get off the field--too little pass rush, too shaky a patchwork secondary.

Again ... only mentioned the D because unless we see a turnaround from the last 2-3 weeks, I think the league has figured out we're unable to rush the passer, and have a patchwork secondary, and have also started losing our lane/angle discipline against the run ... all of which point to us playing from behind more and having the ask our passing game to keep up/catch up.

Perhaps we need to get a D Tracker thread going ...

Averaging 2 interceptions a game
3 and outs galore

Yeah, they are.

The Skins raw TOP numbers ...

37:44 St. Louis
28:30 NYGiants
41:08 Philly
27:49 Atlanta
27:21 NYJets
28:42 Tampa

Sometimes I feel Tandler doesn't know what he's talking about... I like him and he is a good reporter, but the connection he makes between Foles & Cousins negotiations is a huge stretch... there is no real comparison.

Tandler mentions in the article that Foles was "approaching" the final year of his contract... Cousins is already in the final year of his contract. Foles had to choose between making less than a million, or average $12.5M/year... Uh... sign me up. The Rams held all the power in the negotiations and they still gave Foles over $12M. They were able to sign Foles to a shorter term deal with less money.

So... What about Cousins? His contract is up at the end of this year, so if the Redskins want to retain his services there are 3 important factors that determine the value of the proposed contracts:

1) The Franchise/Transition tag numbers... Franchise is ~$24M and Transition will be ~$20M over 1 year (already you are talking about numbers almost double what Foles made). This is only an option if you are CERTAIN you only want one more year to evaluate Kirk Cousins and don't want any future impact. If you franchise him non-exclusive or transition tag, he can negotiate with other teams and you might line up a good trade for him too.
2) The Market Value of Kirk Cousins... Are there other teams interested in his service? How much are they telling his agent they will pay? Do the Redskins value him in the same range? If you tag Kirk Cousins, it's likely teams will be less interested unless you agree to trade for less than a top pick.
3) Robert Griffin III's 5th year option... The Redskins (if they want to keep Cousins) would try to argue that they would pay Cousins the same $16M in the 1st year (with little guaranteed money) and guarantee Cousins is the starter next year (cutting RGIII). Cousins might jump at that opportunity, but it will be considerably more than Foles got.

This is why I say "at minimum" we'll have to pay Kirk Cousins $16M in the 1st year of his deal... That money could be spread out over the life of a contract, but you can't imaging Cousins would be happy with a long-term deal that only guarantees $16M. Maybe a $32M 2 year deal, similar to Foles would be possible. It just depends on the market...

A way it works out for less? They might let Cousins hit the open market, and then ask him to give them an opportunity to match a deal and let him know if they match that he's the guy. Maybe then there is a chance it could be less, but just looking around the league at how bad the QB play is might make it possible for him to make good bank this offseason. Fitzpatrick is only making about $4M, but he's worked his way through about 1/4th of the teams in the league. We'll get a chance to see what other teams think of Cousins. He has 9 games to prove himself.
