Bob, what's the story on Stagg Jr.? Is it a BTAC release? Or just a general bourbon with wide availability?

Its' not a BTAC product but wide availability does not describe it either. There are some so so reviews out, don't believe them its great! Also seems to be selling at the 70-90 range, not the $49.99 list.

Another variance from GTS is that Stagg Jr. will have multiple releases per year. BT expects to offer three to four different batches annually, with each having a different proof still in that eight-to-nine-year range. The batches will be released as enough Bourbon meets the desired taste profile that the distillery is shooting for. BT Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley describes the inaugural Stagg Jr. taste profile as, “rich, sweet, chocolate and brown sugar flavors mingled in perfect balance with a bold, rye spiciness. The boundless finish lingers with hints of cherries, cloves and smokiness.”

To be honest Pappy is a great bourbon, but a lot of the BTAC is better.

Looks like I have managed to secure a couple more hard to get bottles. I am getting a bottle of the Four Roses 125th Anniversary Edition and possibly a bottle of Willett 21 Years old reserve, purple label. My contact also has Stagg Jr for $100 a bottle which is a little high, but reasonable.

Still haven't pulled the trigger on any of the high dollar bourbons. My favorite poor mans is Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve. Elijah Craig is ok, but I like more kick. The stronger version isn't as good as the 80 proof. Knob Creek's stronger Reserve, is as smooth as the small batch version. Me likes that.

I'm probably going to have to just come to a tailgate and pony up a sample fee for HOF44, in order to sample the good stuff. Have to be a preseason game though. I don't do regular season.

My favorite in the cheaper stuff is the Eagle Rare 10yr. Last bottle was only 30 something bucks.

Yeah, I tried that one too. Not terrible, but I didn't care for it much. Having only had one bottle though, I don't know if it's consistent or not. The Knob Creek is. Rowan's Creek is one I liked. But it's not consistent. 3 out 5 bottles were excellent. 1 ok, and 1 seemed to be way different.

I imagine the higher dollar stuff might be more consistent.

Give Noah's Mill a try...cheaper bourbon (I think around $40 a bottle), but really smooth. I like it a lot, and think its better than Maker's or Knob Creek. Haven't had the reserve stuff though.
 
Ax, if you come to a preseason game to try some bourbon make sure I'm going, and let me know your coming. Don't usually bring a lot of bourbon to those, its mostly in the 90's, not exactly bourbon weather! I'll bring a better selection if I know your are coming.

Noah's Mill is from the same distillery as the Willett I'm thinking about getting. I've had the Noahs Mill, but I thought it was a little hot and smokey for me.

An inexpensive bourbon I've heard good things about is Bernheim Original Wheated Borubon. I have not tried it but it's supposed to be smooth.

Would definitely check to be sure you were coming to the game, HOF44. And thanks, I'll have to try the Bernheim Original Wheated. One thing I'm learning, I don't seem to have a very sophisticated nose, or palette. Although, bad is easily discernible, good has many levels.

Haven't seen the Noah's Mill around, Lanky. But I'll start double checking. Thanks

Fair warning: my palette may be screwy, lol. Every bourbon I've mentioned to Bob that I like, he's said is smoky and harsh. HA!

Your palette is not screwy, it's different! All bourbon drinkers have their unique likes and dislikes. For instance several reviews had Stagg Jr. as just ok, I LOVED it. Drink what you like!

Also expose yourself to as much different whisky as you can, that's when you'll develop your "palette" and define your perfect whisky!
