There is literally zero benefit to trading for him. Agreed. He is a slightly better QB than Grossman talent wise, but the pick required to acquire him makes that slight advantage null and void.

We are not going to win with any of these retreads. It's a waste of time. Continue to build the team and groom a young QB. This team has been too screwed for too many years for this to be a 2-3 year project. At some point we may have to throw picks away to move up and get our guy in the draft. But not until we have fixed the many other glaring issues.

Considering the Raiders (after your post was made, way after, in fact) have officially traded their #1 in 2012 and a conditional #1 in 2013 for Carson Palmer, Orton will not be a Raider.

PS: This leaves the Raiders with 2 picks in the draft (5th/6th) and they spent three of their 2012 picks on QBs... 1: Palmer, 3: Pryor, 4: Campbell

The first I saw this trade mentioned on Twitter was Chris Mottram saying Snyder was due for a bonehead move, and that this one puts everything else he's ever done to shame. I almost had a heart attack thinking WE had given up that much for him. So glad it was the Raiders...
 
The raiders really must believe this roster can get them deep in the playoffs to have a zero draft next year. I think Orton remains a bronco unless he can be had for a 6th and someone needs a backup.

Well, the Raiders have played decent football this season, in comparison to recent seasons, with Campbell, and in their system and with the personnel they have Palmer could thrive, possibly.

One question that I have on the whole Orton idea is this-how well would he and his skillset do in the Shanahans' system and with our OL and WR corps?

So, you are going to try and extrapolate an NFL career out of ONE start and some relief time?

Give me a break. My point is he has a very limited body of work to make a judgment on and that is something you don't really dispute.

The next thing you know we will be trading rookie cards.

there's a LOT of quarterbacks in the NFL and coming out of college that are 6'3.

what's UNUSUAL is the fact the Redskins have quarterbacks that are 5'11 and 6'0.

again, your thoughts on Flynn are not based upon much objective criteria, it's mostly a case of taking a few nuggets and extrapolating from them that HUGE things are coming down the road for this guy.
 
Dude, is this the same bulldog that has always been around? Because you're not doing all that impressive a job here. I admitted it doesn't mean much one way or the other, other than he's a capable NFL Quarterback. Does that mean he's a franchise QB? No. But we've seen twice now that Kyle Orton certainly isn't. It's not absurd to believe a guy like Flynn could succeed in the NFL. It's absurd to believe trading for a retread, again, is a good idea.

Furthermore, I've already said I'd rather have a rookie. If we're in any kind of position for Luck, Griffin or Tannehill I'd be thrilled to have any of them.

And for the record, I never said anything about HUGE things. I said I think he could be successful based on what I've seen from his play. The sample size is not great, admittedly.
 
I think Kdawg is correct here, I would 100% rather take a flyer on F;ynn who has at least shown upside in his rare appearances and was beaten out by the best QB in the NFL right now over Orton who barely beat out Gross man and lost his job to tebow. at least Flynn gives us something unknown to work with, if he fails, he is just a place holder, if he turns out awesome, then we are happy.
 
I will ask this-do we know that much more about John Beck than we do about Matt Flynn?
 
KDawg is right that a qb should be available at 10-15 that might be able to step in and play some his first season.

Part of the problem is this coaching staff looks at players in the light of a system that features smaller offensive linemen and quarterbacks who are the size of guys that played 20 years ago.

Shanahan is clearly bucking the trends in the NFL and who this group will come up with at qb is a real question mark.
