Why is this staff so damn slow to react, always. Fans here have been saying for over a month that it made no sense not to get Gulbin the backup C work, instead of wasting time with obvious CFL-er Good-Jones for no reason. They’re so stubborn on the dumbest things
I agree. It feels a lot like the Rivera regime — overestimating their in-house solutions until reality forces them to admit they were wrong. It's the classic "wait for the heart attack before you start the diet" approach -- no urgency until the crisis is already staring them in the face.
I think it's probably a combination of Peters' confidence bordering on arrogance and Quinn's relentlessly positive outlook. And before anyone jumps on me, I don't mean arrogance in some obnoxious, over-the-top way. Even some of the beat guys have made a similar point about Peters: really nice guy, very likable, but there's definitely some arrogance/confidence there.
And frankly, that's not necessarily a bad trait. Plenty of successful people have some arrogance — you almost need a certain amount of it to make bold decisions and trust your evaluations over everyone else's. The key is whether that confidence is earned and, more importantly, whether you're willing to adjust when you're wrong. And I've seen some signs that Peters
is adjusting on that front.
That said, it doesn't feel crazy to me that he might need to get burned twice before the lesson fully sinks in. If a lack of urgency — or a self-created hole on the roster — contributes to blowing up a season for the second year in a row, maybe that's what finally changes his approach. I hope it doesn't take that. But given how Peters operates, I don't think it's far-fetched at all.
I look at Howie Roseman who wasn't that hot early on his career -- now is great at his job and part of that is he leaves very little to chance. Peters certainly doesn't operate that way, yet.
