Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 1 - Dolphins @ Commanders

I don't think I knew that. I was just going off the general practice of free practices.
according to the site...

I disagree.... I do want to see reps, im' just wondering how much they want to see given what they have already seen? We'll know in 24 hours.

Looks like you were more correct on this one:

Edit: and already posted! My bad

Considering our much talked about difficult early season schedule, you would think they would want to step up the reps for the starters this year. But I guess that’s just not their style. So terrified of injuries, yet we seem to get way more than our share of them anyway. And as a season ticket holder, I’m forced to pay full price for tickets to this meaningless game that I have zero interest in attending. Sorry to be a such a grouch, I know other teams do the same thing, but it just seems so damn greedy for a team trying to rebuild a fan base to do this to their most loyal paying customers.

I dont know if it's that simple. Yes, i agree, full price for the tickets is dumb, but the NFL likely would throw a fit if a team decided to do something about it. Teams are responsible for 34% of their ticket sales getting shared into the revenue pool. The NFL would lose their shit if they cut pricing on some of their games, because it cuts the amount getting sent into that pool. I simply don't think it can be changed on a team by team basis? Has any other team discounted their preseason tix?

Thanks, PP! Doesn’t make me feel any better about it lol, but appreciate the information. Good to know I’m helping subsidize small market teams. But that 27 million per team is barely peanuts compared to the TV money split. Seems a little penny wise dollar dumb as they say on the part of the NFL, but they know far better than I what makes them the most money. I feel like they’d sell more tickets to both the preseason and the regular season if they were priced accordingly. Any revenue loss on cheaper preseason tickets would at least partially be made up for by the extra money spent on game day with more fans in the seats.
I guarantee you they’ll be charging full price for concessions and everything else tonight, does that stuff fall under the same split?

According to that, home team keeps concessions. Probably why Atlanta was able to nerf down their stuff with no real backlash from the league a few years back.

Again, you're not wrong. That $27m 'hit' is pennies to the NFL... and the portion of that coming from Preseason games across the league is likely somewhere around 10%. Goodell finds $2.7m in his couch cushions when his maids clean his house for him.

I always thought it made sense to wear your lighter jerseys in Summer heat

Kickoff is at 7pm... don't think sun is going to be an issue.

I believe the theory behind this is that the darker color absorbs the sun / temperature more than White...

Yes, that's the theory I was referring to. Granted 7pm is not 1pm,and I'm sure you're correct that it probably won't matter nearly as much

It's not really a theory. Dark-hued clothing absorb most wavelengths of visible UV sunlight, creating more heat. Light colors refract much more of that energy.

Definitely wear light colored clothing if you're going to be in the sun on a hot day. The difference can feel upwards of 20-25 degrees on a 100 degree day.

Maybe 'theory' wasnt the right word..

the "thought process"... etc.

Point still stands, Kick off is at 7pm, and those high level Sun exposure issues wont come into play. It's also cloudy, so the effect of Sun on a dark jersey is not going to be at a level that I think we need to worry about. Plus it's preseason, so needing some level of competitive edge due to what color jersey is more susceptible to wavelengths of UV sunlight is kind of not a big deal

Is a BGO chat going to be available?

AI response...JG home uniform tradition

During Joe Gibbs' first tenure as head coach of the Washington Redskins (starting in 1981), he famously chose white jerseys paired with burgundy pants as the primary home uniform.

The Joe Gibbs Home Uniform Style

Jersey Color: White
Pants Color: Burgundy

Rationale:
Gibbs wanted his team in white at home so opposing teams were forced to wear their dark colored jerseys, and he liked the look after seeing it used by the San Diego Chargers.

Legacy:
This white-over-burgundy combination became iconic during Washington's 1980s and early '90s Super Bowl championship era

In general, I believe starters need reps in preseason but you do have to be smart not to get them hurt, and most of the game is for the guys in position battles or on the roster bubble to compete. I imagine we will see more of a dress rehearsal in the second game, with the starters playing at least a few series, maybe more or less depending on how the game is going.

As for the uniforms, the return to the old look makes me so happy, and while the burgundy at home is different than what Gibbs did, I like that we won’t be in the white jerseys all the time.

Daniels got lots of pass attempts last off season - he just didn't have them in preseason games. I'm not sure that was a big factor in our season... him being injured 4 times was though.

I agree on the biggest priority - 'game action' for Blough and Daronte Jones - who need every second of it. Only other real priority in preseason is avoiding injuries.
Yeah. Maybe I'm old school, I think preseason games matter. You can get all the reps you want in practice, but the QB isn't "live." There's a different intensity if you know you can get your clock cleaned.

Tom Brady said once somewhere that he liked to play in preseason games because it helped him get acclimated to game day speed. Peyton played in them throughout his career, if I remember correctly. I don't remember him ever commenting on it, but if he didn't want to, he was Peyton Goddamn Manning, he could have just said he didn't want to.

I understand the risks. But I think in order to be in sync with receivers and play caller early in the season, and we need them to hit the ground running, game day action at game day speed is important.

Has anybody seen a list of players not playing?

Can i just say how happy I am to see a dude come in looking like a football player? Absolute focus
