Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

One of my favorite people around my gym is "Mr." Tim. He is a 75 year old Vietnam Combat vet with an incredible life story. Quite the character. I wish he would write a book. Anyway he spars boxing every week. Yes, his defensive reaction is not that of a young person, but if he hits you, you know it. If he catches slipping on your defense and he catches you with an overhand right you are going down if not out. He even fights in smokers guys 20 years younger.

I would literally pick him to help me in a bar fight over 90% of the people in my five story office building. He always says: "Chuck you use it or lose it. Just like I tell my new girlfriend on date night." It seems he has a new girlfriend every other week. Like I said, the man is a character.

I'm working on a 10,000 steps a day "challenge" until my birthday, with one rest day per week.

So far so good. And I'm doing mostly running, though some walking. Went for an hour jog/walk yesterday. Got just about 4.6 miles in during the hour.

First day back at the gym in awhile yesterday. I have been so wasted from my garden project and moving countless bags of dirt I have literally been so sore I couldn't handle anything else.
Different kind of sore this morning, but it's good to get back to it.

I have found the fountain of youth…yoga. (I know, I know).

I have always looked sideways at it. Did one class 25 years ago and said ‘fuck that, never again’. I finally relented in an effort to correct my miserable existence with my lower back. I started doing a morning session at home of 25 minutes 1 month ago. It has been life-changing. No bs, no hyperbole.

If you think that having balky knees, ankles, shoulders, along with any back issues is just a normal part of the aging process…you’ve been misled or lying to yourself. I have found that daily mobility work is like oil for the Tinman. What an absolute blessing.

My only experience with Yoga is when I was doing P90X a decade or so ago. One of the workout routines was Yoga and it was actually one of the most challenging of them. 90 minutes of challenge. I remember at that time that it made a big difference but was very difficult even getting into a lot of the positions at the time, but that it got much easier after some practice. I probably badly need to incorporate something like this into my workout routines.

I would characterize what I do as ‘yoga lite’. It’s not challenging at all and I have come to enjoy it. It’s definitely not a chore but, boy, the dividends. Oh, the dividends!

I do my ‘routine’ every morning. It is really good, especially prior to lifting sessions.
