The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Things will change when we have actual performance to discuss in camps etc.
A ton of truth in this post.

From one POV, our outlook is much like power ratings that look at last year and assume nothing has changed. It's not a totally unreasonable take, but it could be that there are answers awaiting us and there is a reason they've so far been comfortable making one big swing (if a third rounder can be considered a big swing) at receiver. Maybe they're seeing things in practices that tell them that the pups are ready to roar? Maybe it will be worse than we fear? Until then, we're all going to guess, worry, wring our fingers, and adjust our burgundy colored glasses.

If they are going to sign Diggs, they should do so quickly. Blough is installing his offense now during OTAs and you want guys to be in the building for that vs. playing catch-up later.

I'd like to get it done, too.

I suspect if you were talking to Burgold in January he would be less than excited about either Diggs or Aiyuk in filling the Robin role to McLaurin's Batman. Burgold in May is like "Eff it! I'll take the Wonder Twins!!!"

A ton of truth in this post.
This is really the worst time to debate and discuss what will happen. One school of thought is based entirely on past performance, which is reasonable. Others look at potential and improvement, which isn't unreasonable either.

More or less. I'd still like to add Diggs.

OK, lol, so I understand your point. Where I disagree.

On giving Peters a pass for the roster, I think people already are. He’s getting a lot of credit for the O-line and defense, even though we don’t actually know if those units are fixed. You’ve got some mixed signals —PFF had the line around 13th, NFL.com closer to the mid-20s, and even guys like Jay Gruden questioning Conerly. Logan Paulsen is projecting growth, but admitted he saw him as average at best during the season. Center is still a total unknown. On defense, some national pundits still think it’s going to struggle. But I among others think the naysayers are wrong.

That said, I’m giving Peters the benefit of the doubt—I’m assuming Conerly hits, the line gels, and the defense improves because of volume additions. And that’s faith, not proof. He hasn’t earned a victory lap on those units yet, and people are already giving him one, including myself. So lol, I think we are giving him plenty of faith some earned, some unearned at this point.

So the question becomes: how many more assumptions are we stacking on top of that?

At running back, I liked Croskey-Merritt in that draft and was high on Rachaad White too here in FA—but that room to me is fine, not special. It’s not moving the needle in a big way for me. I know you think both are studs are close enough. I don't. Both solid. But you never know. And I don't think I am that unusual. I was listening to multiple dudes who covered White in Tampa as an example, who talked about him as solid, not special. He got paid like what 1.5 million?

At receiver, I like Antonio Williams more than anyone here predraft, but he hasn’t played a snap. Banking on him as your WR2 right away—without first-round pedigree—is a leap. In a rebuild year, sure, take that gamble. But if you believe this team can actually contend, that’s a different standard.

And I don’t think the team itself views McCaffrey or Lane as breakout guys this year. Unless I am missing a segment or two, that doesn’t line up with what the beat writers are hearing, and more importantly, it doesn’t match their actions—pursuing other receivers and drafting another at the same spot they play.

As for Lane, I watched a lot of his Virginia Tech tape and was surprised they didn’t use him more on quick-hitting plays and YAC opportunities here as I pointed out. But taking screens for YAC, isn't high-end playmaking. He’s very useful—very good returner, solid depth, maybe a WR4.

But to sum it up, I think Peters is getting a lot of credit for moves that still require projection. There’s a limit to that—some of us just aren’t ready to give him a full victory lap or celebrate every decision as a win. I’m not saying he’s done a bad job, just that not everything deserves a “nailed it” stamp yet. And as it stands, I don’t see this roster—especially the current WR group—as Super Bowl caliber.

Maybe. Not sure he starts. I guess if its about going tall, then Burks?

They're listed at the same height. Luke doesn't need to start to be a RZ option. So long as he's suiting up for his return abilities, he could come in on RZ packages. Maybe that's how they justify his roster spot in a crowded if mediocre group.

6 '1 1/2 looking up Luke as to RAS, Burks 6 '2.

Obviously height isn't everything. Chig is 6'2 and change and hasn't been much of a red zone target.

Some of it is seperation skills in short space so maybe it ends up Antonio?

I’m another one that thinks the defense is very much improved. Though I am still a bit cautious with how much.

Chenal and Styles, athletically, are a significant upgrade. Losing leadership and grit in Wagner and Luvu there does hurt a little. But not getting torched on routes in the hook/curl zones will be a big time boon. And Luvu is going to be playing…

Corner - I think our depth is improved. Witherspoon and Robertson are big time backup additions. Amos and Sainristil… only time can tell.

Cross is an upgrade at safety. I’m hoping Quan is much better than last year due to scheme change.

I’m going to catch some shit here… but… I’m going to say it anyways… I think guys like Rueben Bain, Akheem Mesidor would have been better than Oweh. Now, I’m NOT saying I’d have taken either of them over Styles. I wouldn’t. Not for this team, anyways. My point is just that I’m not sure how good Oweh and Chaisson really are. Are they a drastic improvement on what we had? Absolutely. Are they game changing guys who are going to wreck opponents’ gameplans? I don’t think so. But they will be better and solid additions.

Interior DL will be about the same, a bit improved with Settle.

I like Daronte Jones style of defense more than Whitt’s. And I think Jones has the right make up. So I think the defense should be, at worst, middle of the pack. Which is a very large improvement.

Offense… Blough is a major question. To be clear, I like him. He’s smart, he knows the game and he’s obviously someone who has gotten through to the people that make decisions enough for there to be value in multiple organizations. But he’s a first year OC, with a very young overall coaching staff, who had 1.5 months experience as a position coach. He will make mistakes. I’m fine with that. I think he has high potential. But he’s is a rookie OC, and that needs to be reiterated.

I am NOT sold on the OL like many here are.

Allegretti is a downgrade to me. I know, the team doesn’t think so. And to be fair, they’d know better than I would. So, that is what it is. But… I’m concerned.

I’m not sure about Paul. He’s better than not having Paul, I suppose.

Cosmi needs to step his game up again.

Conerly made strides and had some outstanding games, but he also struggled at times and needs to be more consistent and take big strides.

There are a ton of questions on the starting OL aside from Tunsil… who is worth his weight in gold.

RB is overall improved. I won’t split hairs on how. But the group as a whole is more dynamic, which for this offense I value.

I deep dove receiver a page or so ago. Not doing that again. Same with tight end.

Finally… QB. Jayden needs to prove some things too. He needs to stay healthy, we need to get some of his rushing performance from somewhere else and he needs to throw for over 4k yards this year. If I was a betting man, though, he’s the guy aside from Terry I have the most faith in.

We have a long way to go, and the on-field performance against OTHER TEAMS will be a major factor in which way I am leaning as the season gets closer.

I’m not particularly interested in how the O/D do against each other. It could be one side is struggling and the other isn’t. Or just the situations. Live reps will be a big tell.

We’ll see.

Yeah I could see it going 1) Terry 2) Antonio 3) the RBs via play-action leaking into the flat when LBs overcommit to the run?

Agree with almost all of this. And my point is for those here who seem annoyed with those here who don't fully embrace the roster and this off season. If you cut through our points, I think most of us, embrace most of it.

And my point is, for those who seem annoyed with any criticism of the roster or offseason—if you really listen, most of us actually like the majority of what Peters has done.

This isn’t about rejecting everything—it’s just not a full, blind endorsement of every move as a home run.

And compared to the national media, mock drafters, and even what you’re hearing from other front offices (judging by that Athletic article), we’re actually way more positive about this roster.

Most of them think this team will suck. I don’t—I think they’ll be good. My frustration is simple: we’ve got a Lamborghini at quarterback… now give it the fuel to truly maximize it.

Did they nail it at WR? CB? Is it the end of the world if they didn't hit it out of the park everywhere? Nope. But do i think it deters them from winning a SB? Yes. But that is a far cry from lol the majority national observors who expect them to suck.

Ya, I’m not sure where we fall record wise. The schedule will be tough. But I think the on-field product will be overall improved on defense. I’m just not sure at all about the offense. I expect improvement in a general sense, assuming Jayden is healthy, but I’m just not sure how much.

I think we are a 5 win floor and a 10 win ceiling. Which I think is better than my prediction last year if I remember correctly where I said 5 win floor and 8 win ceiling.

But I think we’ll be in that 7ish win range ultimately and look much better while doing it.

I definitely don’t think we’re going to suck. Unless there are key injuries, which… I am a bit nervous about. But if the major guys are healthy I don’t think we dip below 7 wins.

If that's the outcome, do you fire Quinn?

In the coaching thread I seemed to be in the minority position of giving him another year if the team wins more games and looks much better but still fails to make the playoffs. Most seemed to think it was playoffs or bust for DQ. So if your base case prediction is 7-ish wins, are you also therefore expecting to fire Quinn after 2026 or are you one of the more patient ones on the coaching front?

It all depends how we look when we are doing it. 7 wins can be a gross underachievement (we have leads that we blow and lose games or bad decisions by coaches cost us games) or an overachievement (some injuries we overcome, competitive) or just where we belong.

I think if it’s the latter 2/3 of those scenarios, you keep him and give him and both coordinators year 2.

If either coordinator needs to be fired, DQ needs to go, though.

There’s a lot of context but overall, unless it’s a disastrous version of 7 wins, I keep him.

The only reason this thread isn't focusing more in this area is due to the ire need at WR2.

Even if Allegretti is an improvement with line calls/vocal communications he is not as good of a C as Biadasz. He has been looked at as more of a backup G only not being sufficient as a starting G.

And Paul was the weak like to the starters. I find it amazing he is back and listed as the starter...for whatever that's with at the point. He is Meh at best but Tunsil kind of vouched for him and probably as his 2026 lottery ticket.

I agree with this. It also seemed to be the minority position on the board as of a few months ago in the coaching thread. I will say I think a base case of 7 wins is a tad low, I do think they should be hovering around .500 and in the Wild Card mix as a baseline. But generally speaking, if the coordinators seem to be the right guys and the team is on the upswing, they should have a chance to see it through in 2027. That's when Peters can load up on weapons and truly finish the rebuild, too. (Whether it should have taken him that long is a separate issue, but I think we can all agree this roster remains incomplete from a team building standpoint)

I was worried last off season and expressed it, thought they'd take a step back, but I didn't think it would be as bad as it was, but I didn't expect that level of injuries.

The defense -- I like Chenal, Styles, Cross. I do think Oweh and Chaisson improve the pass rush, hopefully Armstrong comes back. I like the Flores scheme. I like what I've heard about Daronte.

My guess is the defense rises from bad to slightly above average.

On offense: And these are opinions of course not facts.

A. Does Conerly take a step up? I think so. Don't know if Allegretti works out at center. I don't think its this great unit that some feel it is. But I think it likely will be good.

B. I am a little worried about red zone-third down. People seem down on Ertz, but he was their 2nd leading TE last year and a cushion for Jayden on third down and in the red zone.

C. I think Antonio Williams is going to be good from the jump and emerge as their #2 super fast.

D. I think Lane is great PR and just a guy as a WR, a #4. As to McCaffrey, don't know about how he is post injury but I think he's OK but I doubt he's emerging as a #3.

E. I do think they sign Aiyuk. And they try to work it out with the rotation, committee of #4 WRs until he's ready.

F. I think the RB room is deep and solid, but not great. Good.

When they went on that 2024 run, they had the easiest schedule in the NFL, had almost no injuries, and won so many games with the last play. this season isn't shaping up to be easy like that. To beat all these good teams IMO we need a strong roster across the board. Do they have that? Almost but not quite IMO.

My floor is 7 wins, ceiling 11 wins.

I think though with Jayden they have a chance to beat anyone in the playoffs because he's clutch. I don't find myself or you or anyone here lol a hater for wanting this team to do more to help Jayden -- I don't think its too much to ask to have a legit #2 Wr, almost every team has one.

I keep seeing Breer's speculation bandied around on the socials.

Has there been anything concrete regarding Diggs?

Nothing concrete. That was just him saying he sees it as a fit.
It's a bunch of aggregators running with it as fact now. I was curious if I missed something. Has anyone brought him in for a visit yet?
