The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Those are indeed questions for them. Unfortunately, we already have the answers for this team. We go 4-12, give or take a few broken bones. Unless the brand new OC is able to do more with this offense than Kliff Kingsbury could get out of his handpicked players. It would be frickin awesome if Blough can already outscheme a seasoned OC, but I'm going to temper my expectations for him a little.

I dunno man. Losing as many players as we did on an already crappy D, our top 3 receivers missing much of the year, top rb missing almost all of the season, and our qb out for most of it… that was a pretty epic shitstorm.

Obviously there’s a chance we’re right back in that position (as I said elsewhere, a lot could go wrong), but it seems to me like we’re in a much better position to weather that kind of storm, even if there are still some pretty serious question marks,

Who do the Seahawks have after JSN? Shaheed caught 15 passes for 188 and no TDs in 9 games for them. LMC caught 11 for 203 and 3 TDs in the same number of games. Burks, who also switched teams mid-season had 10/130/1 in 8 games.
Who do the Ravens have after Flowers?
Who do the Colts have after Pierce?
Who do the Pats have after Doubs (this obviously changes if Brown goes there)? What happens if Doubs can't surpass his usual sub-60, 850 yrd performance if they don't get Brown?
Who do the Giants have if Nabers gets hurt again or doesn't fully recover?
Who do the Falcons have if London goes down?
Who do the Bills have if DJ Moore goes down?
What are the Rams going to do with out Nacua for the first part of the year? Rely on 34 yr old Adams?
If the Eagles do trade Brown, can Smith be a #1?

There are questions for a lot of teams if the #1 goes down.

For me its not do we have a legit backup #1. But its do we have a legit #2? Agree most teams don't have a 1A and 1B. But most teams have a legit #2, this team one of the rare teams that don't. So when the #1 goes down -- we are relying on a dude that's a #3 or #4 on most teams and that's not enough. You can survive much easier losing a #1 when you got a #2, but when you lose a #1 and your next best guy is a #3 type, you are in trouble.

Terry is going on 31, coming off an injury plagued season, the whole impasse on the contract was themed on he's not elite, and 30 plus year old WRs tend to decline fast and are prone to injuries, so our version of a #1 might not be that hot.

Jayden hasn't had a true #2 WR in his first two seasons and might not in season 3.

As to your example, Devonta Smith might not be a #1 but he's certainly a #2 and high end version of one. Patriots have a great pass catching WR in Treveyon Henderson. Doubs is a good #2. And by most accounts they will replace Diggs with AJ Brown and I like their WR depth better than Washington, too.

Look at Denver with both Sutton and Waddle and the best O line in the league arguably. As to your other examples: Devonte Adams as a #2, is a mile better than anything we got. Falcons need a #2, I agree but they also have Pitts and the best RB in the NFL. Giants last season had Wandale Robinson as the #2, with over 1000 yards. We were salviating over their #3 when he hit FA in Slayton. But agree that they need to do better, I like their signings of Mooney and Austin over Dyami and Van Jefferson but its not hot by either team. And I do prefer Antonio Williams over their drafting of Malachi Fields.

Lets take the Bears. They draft a WR top 10. They already have a young TE that's good in Kmet. Guess what? They draft another TE in the first in Loveland. They take another WR early -- early 2nd. So two young TEs. two young WRs. You'd figure they are done right? that's more than this team has done.

But nope, they add arguably the third best TE in the draft this draft season. They also like this team draft a WR in the third. That's a team that's all hands on deck to help Caleb. They also built their O line, took arguably the top center from this draft and had the #3 rated O line by PFF.

My issue with Peters is while its commendable that he built the O line. Teams like the Bears built an O line and built a killer supporting cast. Among the 2024 drafted QBs, is there a QB who has been given less than Jayden? IMO no. And at a minimuim Caleb and Drake Maye in particular at this moment in time, especially Caleb, I would think have to say themselves thank the Lord I am in Chicago and NE and not Washington.

Its not that I necessarily disagree with you because theres no doubt that the bears have done more for Caleb than we've done for jayden but our situations are different, they had more talent to begin with and were able to use their resources differently.

Its like comparing peters moves to rosemans moves, its not a fair comparison because roseman had and still has a lot more to work with.

like playing poker, your chip stack is as important as your hand and peters came in with a chip and a chair while roseman was staring over a tower of high society so of course he was able to make some moves that peters couldn't.

That said mistakes have also been made, peters tried to get him some help in sinnott, Luke and lane and so far none look like world beaters or even contributors yet at least on offense.

I just dont think its fair to compare two teams completely different situations and knock peters for not doing what another team did when they dont have equal resources or starting points.

Peters had like top 3 space in the NFL as to cap room, 3 off seasons in a row. A zillion draft picks in 2024.

Granted, he created his own pressure on himself by the 2024 draft not bringing much impact and basically forgoing taking advantage of his cap room in 2025 -- so he's had to recover. It helps the Bears that some of their picks on offense like Loveland and Burden and Monagai have killed it. And their trades for O lineman, etc have worked out. So the Bears success in their efforts have made it easier to build on.

I think the Zaccheus signing which was a minor hit set this team back. When Keim goes part of the reason why this FO was surprised the WR plan fell apart was they expected something from the Chris Moore, KJ Osborne, Michael Gallup signings. That's just wild to me. You got the Bears using high first round picks, high 2nd rounders, signing more FAs including ironically Zaccheus. And we got Peters wondering what happened with his minimum veteran street free agents and mid round projects at WR?

Lets move to this year. I think Conn nailed it as to what happened with FA this year at Wr. Their plan simply didn't work. Their A plan failed and they waited for it to work and while doing so, it was too late for Plan B. It was the opposite for edge where Plan A failed but they had the time to pivot to Plan B and it was easier to do it because there was a bigger pool of players.

So piecing it together feels like the plan was:

A. Pierce
B. Doubs
C. Aiyuk
D. Jennings
E. Shaheed

So they bid 30 million and don't land Pierce. I'd bet they were surprised. But no worries, they will bid big for Doubs -- they lose out because he wanted to play for Maye. OK no biggie because Aiyuk will be released the first week of FA. Or they can pivot to Jennings. But SF decided to hold Aiyuk hostage. And Jennings wanted big money. And while they chased this Shaheed got signed as did other C plus players like Nailor.

So now they got few options. Aiyuk might not be released until just before the start of the season. And if they are locked in on him, can they sign Jennings, too? They got to pick one. And they might already have a disgruntled Jayden with how this has played out so do you upset him by going from we are going to sign your friend to hey sorry we changed our minds?

Im certainly not going to disagree with you that peters has made some mistakes on personnel, the Lattimore deal set us back big time and his first draft is looking like mostly a stinker and since then we've had drastically reduced capital either due to trades or the one good year.

And yeah he's learning on the job and hopefully he gets better and more of the guys he brings in work out.

I think he's done a good job this off season and I get the impression he's getting better at his job judging by this off season. But IMO he has two lingering issues with this roster.

A. While I love the Antonio Williams pick. He can't shrug off the Z spot for the third year in a row. Jayden deserves better.

B. You can't leave a roster spot or two that is so based on things working out in your favor, a lot of good fortune, and without a net behind it so you are betting on luck. That's what they did at edge and Wr and it blew up in their face last year. This year they are so far flirting with the same idea at CB and maybe WR.

They have time to fix both spots but not a lot of options. But the two narratives I'd like to see him kill are

A. We don't go to town for Jayden like some other teams do for their young QBs.

B. We will leave a spot or two so weak that it can unravel the season.

Hey it could be worse, we could be the browns.

Looks like Watson is the frontrunner to land the starting job.
Imagine if he has a monster year and they have to figure out whether to give him another huge contract.

That'd be the most browns thing ever 🤣

It could be worse, indeed. And look he still has time to shore up CB and WR this off season, will see.

But if he doesn't I suspect he might need another painful lesson to learn from that he takes to heart next off season.

The leave a spot to chance for an if and buts were candy and nuts approach with no net behind it is very Ron Rivera.

The leave the QB to figure out the WR spot with a 2nd-3rd rate lineup seems like a Peters unique thing. Jay for his faults loaded up Kirk. Ron for his faults at least tried to load up his young QBs.

And I get you aren't going to be strong everywhere. But most teams with young QBs by default approach it with the idea of lets above everything else protect our young QB and load them up with weapons so help them grow into a franchise QB. It makes sense considering your franchise will live or die by whether you can groom or not a franchise QB. Peters to his credit does buy into protect the QB -- but the weapons side of thing is clearly the spot he is least interested in upgrading as to him choosing where to upgrade -- so that's whats frustrating.

And there is some evidence that Jayden is frustratred based on social media examples i gave. I think at a minimum he has to be jealous of Drake, McCarthy, and especially Caleb as to how their GMs go full out to upgrade weapons for them.

I get what you're saying, but, to be fair, two of those picks were top-10 picks that we didn't have; likewise they still had top-10 pick Darnell Wright from 2023...man it must be nice to have draft picks still on the team from 3-4-5 years ago...🤣

Burden came in the Conerly draft--there's an opportunity cost there, it would have cost us Conerly to put get a weapon for Daniels. Would you rather have Higgins there (the next WR taken) or Burden? Do we go for Tyson over Styles to put a weapon around Daniels? I sure wouldn't. If we took Tate there, this is a different conversation, but he wasn't available. There is certainly criticism, but saying "the Bears did it, why didn't we?" doesn't really put the necessary context there. They were able to do both the line and the receivers because they had the picks we didn't--for a variety of reasons: Lattimore's failed trade, acquiring Tunsil, CTE Ron (if we have Trent Williams still, we obviously don't make this move...also, JSN...this one pisses me off more than Christian Gonzalez). Yeah, we sat on our hands last offseason, a mistake that Peters learned from, but I don't recall the receivers last year being anything to really write home about, but I might be misremembering.

You mention Calvin Austin, he went from 17/180/1 in his rookie year to a 500+ season in year two--no reason Lane can't do that. I would love to see him used more like Samuel was last year--get him in space and let him use his 4.3 speed and return skills on offense. Speaking of Lane, Raheed Shaheed--who many wanted here--was basically Lane for the Seahawks last year: in 9 games, 15 rec 188 yards, 0 TDs, 2 return TDs (1 KR, 1 PR). McCaffery was better than that in 9 games; Burks was almost better than that in 8 games, in a worse situation (coming off injuries, no camp, midseason acquisition, has most of his time with Mariota and JJ). He got $35m guaranteed in the offseason. Mike Evans got 3 years (albeit a low cap hit and only $14m guarantee). He'll be 33 on opening day, coming off a far more injured season than McLaurin. I would have loved to have Pierce or Doubs--but really glad they didn't get desperate and do something stupid.

As for other options, you're not the only person to bring up Mooney or Austin, but I'd rather give Lane and LMC those snaps. Mooney is pushing 30 and would be really redundant with Lane, even before drafting Williams. We're (royal we, not you in particular) so very quick to give up on young players (and then have a meltdown when they catch one TD pass like Tinsley, or have one or two really good games like Forbes and Bourne). Let them actually develop, rather than burying them on the depth chart behind older, "proven" commodities like Austin and Mooney.

You mention Henderson, what's the difference between him and Rachaad White, at least from a receiving stand point? Henderson also looked great against some of the worst run defenses in the league, but was a total non-factor in the playoffs.

We will see, maybe we add Jennings, but even then, he's pushing 30, and would probably be a one-year deal. I've seen a number of posters want someone to build rapport with Daniels--but immediately want to drop those opportunities for stop-gaps like Mooney, Austin, Jennings.

I'll also say that no one thought the Seahawks were going to be what they were last year going into the season--they were ranked in the bottom half of the league in pre-season power rankings last year. No one thought JSN was going to be the OPOY. No one thought Kenneth Walker was going to blow up like he did.

Speaking of receivers, Mark Bullock is on George Carmi breaking down Williams:

Bears had two number 1's in 2024. But after that just 4 picks in the whole draft. Commanders had 9 picks. three in the 2nd round, two in the third. Commanders with a ton of cap room three years in row.

I don't give Peters extra credit for pissing picks away for Lattimore that hurt the 2025 draft or deciding not to press the gas in FA in 2025 in spite of all their cap room. Look at what NE did in 2025 with their FA spree?

They had plenty of resources and money to go to town on any spot they wanted.

They are in a rookie contract window with Jayden. Time is running out. I am not interested in giving Lane or McCaffrety 3-4 years to see what they got. And if they got it, no one is stopping them, show it in camp. Terry broke from the pack right away by showing it in camp as a rookie. So i am not writing off the project WRs, but I am not banking on it. I was at camp last year where lol I thought among some that cover the team that wow this teams corners are special because no one is getting open. So if McCaffrey has got what it takes, beat the UDFAs in camp versus struggling against them which has been said by some including Keim who is at every camp pratice.

You are bringing up the Giants FA signings even though I said they are meh just like Washington. But yeah to your point, I would take Mooney over Dyami. But we are shooting low either way. And my point wasn't I wanted Mooney. I was going apples to apples their signings to Washingtons, don't love either but I like theirs better. Giants had a much better WR corp last year than Washington -- this year they both look meh, if you want to argue Washington is better, I'd agree if Nabers takes time to heal. But its not the bar i am reaching for.

Shaheed was much more than Lane was for us. He had about 60 catches, 700 yards. You isolated his end season numbers with Seattle but in total he had a good season.

And Lane wasn't a deep threat in college and hasn't been in the pros. As I talked about plenty in the draft thread, being fast doesn't make you a deep threat. It's about your hands and ball tracking and that's not been Lane's game.

As for Seattle, they have a veteran QB (ironically one I've lampooned but to his credit he's had a later career resurgence) not a young one learning their ways. And heck give me a top 3 defense. Give me the top WR in the game who is healthy and in another orbit than Terry. And I'll take Cooper Kupp over the clowns that played Z last year and who are slated so far to play Z for this team.

As for Rachaad White versus Treveyon Henderson. Agree in season 1, passing stats similar.

As runners no comparison. White career 3.9 YPC. Henderson went 5.1. Henderson with 911 yards, 9 TDs. White with 572 yards, 4 TDs.

They are in a rookie contract window with Jayden. Time is running out.
This is an interesting thing. We have heard for years that they HAVE to win while Jayden is on his rookie contract. The only Super Bowl inning QB from the last 15 years on a rookie deal? By my count: Mahomes in 2020, Wilson in 2014, Flacco in 2012, Rodgers in 2011. That's it. You mention McLaurin broke in camp right away--so if they don't we move on? This is what I mean by there is no patience. So the answer is signing ANOTHER one-year deal, while lamenting no one is here past this year?

Mooney over Dyami? Sure, maybe. You could sell me the other way too--and I think Dyami is on the bubble.

You isolated his end season numbers with Seattle but in total he had a good season.
There was a point in doing that though--he changed teams. We have seen time and time again a fall off in production like this after trades, signings etc. It clearly happened to Shaheed--he really didn't out perform the receivers in his time in Seattle. Let'sa

Well, in the playoffs, against real defenses, he looked more like White as a runner. I don't think the Patriots faced a run defense over 24th in the league during the regular season, I think I saw?

The offensive alterations were modest at best in free agency. General manager Adam Peters prioritized defensive acquisitions and spent the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on linebacker Sonny Styles. That should help the Commanders become more balanced, but most believe Daniels' supporting cast is subpar.

The Commanders could do without Daniels trying to be a hero. Offensive coordinator David Blough's new scheme should play to his strengths while limiting the chances of significant punishment. That could be more important than anything, but it also leaves a lot to chance.

Terry McLaurin is the only sure thing in Washington's passing attack. Unless Treylon Burks, Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, or third-round rookie Antonio Williams break out, the Commanders have a problem. There is the lingering cloud of Brandon Aiyuk, but his possible arrival could take months.

The running back-by-committee approach has some solid options but no legitimate game changers. Chig Okonkwo is a fascinating addition to the tight end room, but massive questions remain about Ben Sinnott. Washington's offensive line is easily the biggest plus, even if the center position could be a weak link.

It looks as if there will be an over-reliance on Daniels

He struggled along with the Pats offense as a rookie. But I'd put money that you would find no GM who would trade Treveyon Henderson to get Rachaad White.

Who do the Seahawks have after JSN? Shaheed caught 15 passes for 188 and no TDs in 9 games for them. LMC caught 11 for 203 and 3 TDs in the same number of games. Burks, who also switched teams mid-season had 10/130/1 in 8 games.

If the Eagles do trade Brown, can Smith be a #1?

There are questions for a lot of teams if the #1 goes down.

You have a point here, although one major difference is that pretty much all of those #1 WRs are considerably younger than McLaurin. He's going on 31. So depth is one issue, but urgency to replace an aging player is also a part of the equation.

Technically he played in 9, but got hurt early on and had 0 offensive snap counts in the 9th game.

Technically he played in 9, but got hurt early on and had 0 offensive snap counts in the 9th game.

With what Luke did last year, I anecdotally remember a number of busted coverages. He had his chance to step up when Terry went down but Robbie Chosen came off the street and made a bigger impact than him as a receiver.

I think there is still room to really fix WR. We could make a trade and sign Aiyuk. We could sign Jennings and Aiyuk. Both of those would give us a really solid top 4. But I think we need to make two moves and I don’t see them doing that.i can’t help but wonder if contract length is the road block with Jennings.

And if Aiyuk IS the primary plan at WR 2, just give up the 7th and get him here for mini camp.

We may just be screwed at CB. I don’t know what other decent options there are.

And I can’t help but feel like Peters doesn’t see either of these positions as code red.
