Lets' take the Bears. They draft a WR top 10. They already have a young TE that's good in Kmet. Guess what? They draft another TE in the first in Loveland. They take another WR early -- early 2nd. So two young TEs. two young WRs. You'd figure they are done right? that's more than this team has done.
I get what you're saying, but, to be fair, two of those picks were top-10 picks that we didn't have; likewise they still had top-10 pick Darnell Wright from 2023...man it must be nice to have draft picks still on the team from 3-4-5 years ago...🤣
Burden came in the Conerly draft--there's an opportunity cost there, it would have cost us Conerly to put get a weapon for Daniels. Would you rather have Higgins there (the next WR taken) or Burden? Do we go for Tyson over Styles to put a weapon around Daniels? I sure wouldn't. If we took Tate there, this is a different conversation, but he wasn't available. There is certainly criticism, but saying "the Bears did it, why didn't we?" doesn't really put the necessary context there. They were able to do both the line and the receivers because they had the picks we didn't--for a variety of reasons: Lattimore's failed trade, acquiring Tunsil, CTE Ron (if we have Trent Williams still, we obviously don't make this move...also, JSN...this one pisses me off more than Christian Gonzalez). Yeah, we sat on our hands last offseason, a mistake that Peters learned from, but I don't recall the receivers last year being anything to really write home about, but I might be misremembering.
You mention Calvin Austin, he went from 17/180/1 in his rookie year to a 500+ season in year two--no reason Lane can't do that. I would love to see him used more like Samuel was last year--get him in space and let him use his 4.3 speed and return skills on offense. Speaking of Lane, Raheed Shaheed--who many wanted here--was basically Lane for the Seahawks last year: in 9 games, 15 rec 188 yards, 0 TDs, 2 return TDs (1 KR, 1 PR). McCaffery was better than that in 9 games; Burks was almost better than that in 8 games, in a worse situation (coming off injuries, no camp, midseason acquisition, has most of his time with Mariota and JJ). He got $35m guaranteed in the offseason. Mike Evans got 3 years (albeit a low cap hit and only $14m guarantee). He'll be 33 on opening day, coming off a far more injured season than McLaurin. I would have loved to have Pierce or Doubs--but really glad they didn't get desperate and do something stupid.
As for other options, you're not the only person to bring up Mooney or Austin, but I'd rather give Lane and LMC those snaps. Mooney is pushing 30 and would be really redundant with Lane, even before drafting Williams. We're (royal we, not you in particular) so very quick to give up on young players (and then have a meltdown when they catch one TD pass like Tinsley, or have one or two really good games like Forbes and Bourne). Let them actually develop, rather than burying them on the depth chart behind older, "proven" commodities like Austin and Mooney.
You mention Henderson, what's the difference between him and Rachaad White, at least from a receiving stand point? Henderson also looked great against some of the worst run defenses in the league, but was a total non-factor in the playoffs.
We will see, maybe we add Jennings, but even then, he's pushing 30, and would probably be a one-year deal. I've seen a number of posters want someone to build rapport with Daniels--but immediately want to drop those opportunities for stop-gaps like Mooney, Austin, Jennings.
I'll also say that no one thought the Seahawks were going to be what they were last year going into the season--they were ranked in the bottom half of the league in pre-season power rankings last year. No one thought JSN was going to be the OPOY. No one thought Kenneth Walker was going to blow up like he did.
Speaking of receivers, Mark Bullock is on George Carmi breaking down Williams:
