Who do you want under center in 2011?

Yeah, I forgot about the dad thing. That's a major pain in the ass, and a lot of teams won't want to deal with it. There is bound to be a lot of drama over time when the NCAA stuff starts to get ironed out. Could end up being a pretty major distraction.

I saw where the Eagles will put the franchise tag on Vick and entertain trade discussions for Kolb. Of course nothing can be finalized until new CBA. However a team needing a QB may have an agreement in place.

Would something like this alter the draft? Who knows? Should be an interesting off season.

The way some of the mocks I was looking at yesterday are going some of them are projecting Newton to be gone before we'd have a shot at him anyway.

Yeah, I can see that continuing to happen, Serv. I would guess that his measurables will be off the charts at the Combine, which will drive his stock up even more. Wouldn't surprise me to see he and Gabbert switch projected draft order. Gabbert doesn't strike me as having the insane measurables that Newton will have, which may cause him to fall.

Last season during Vick's amazing run, everyone was saying this was the future of NFL QBs. Steve Young practically drooled on TV. It didn't last all season, but for six to seven weeks it was incredible to watch. I'm thinking GMs and owners will want to try to replicate that, and Newton is the best bet for that possibility.

I've heard some mentions of Christian Ponder from FSU in the media, saying he's a good fit for Shanahan's offense.

I think Phil Taylor's performance in the senior bowl moved him from the early second round to a first round pick; I think he should be the pick at 10th overall. A reach? Maybe...but as the key piece in the 3-4 D, NT can be reached on I think. He's also expressed that he's willing to play either technique (WOW, what a novelty!) so if he doesn't work out at NT, oh well, we've got a dominating 3-4 DE as a consolation prize.

If we take Taylor at 10, Ponder would almost certainly be available at 42 (41?).

Quite a reach from what I've read, but I like your thinking. I'm loving your thinking if it includes trading back to pick up a few extra picks and still getting Taylor.

The truth is, until the combine happens, draft position is still in huge flux. If Taylor goes in and augments his Senior Bowl performance with a killer combine performance, he could easily jump into the top 15. If he only does 'okay' at the combine, I predict he'll still go in the bottom of the first. He won't get by Pittsburgh or San Diego, IMO.

I would like to see McNabb taking the snaps. Partially because I believe he is the best QB on the roster, and partially because I hate to throw away what he cost us in draft picks.

I was a firm believer in Sam Bradford. I just don't get that feeling yet from any of this year's draft prospects.

I've heard the knock on Ponder is his arm strength. He's a smart kid and a hard worker. I bet the Shanahan's would like him.

I would love to land Phil Taylor!! I bet his stock after the combine rises and he will be a great pick at #10. If he is still projected as a late first or early second round pick then I say we try and trade down a few spots and pick up some extra picks. The problem is, it is easy to say let's move down but we need a partner that wants to trade up.

What do you guys think about picking a pass rusher opposite Orakpo? How high of a priority is that?

You thinking somebody like Von Miller maybe? Might be something to consider if a good potential NT is around deeper in the draft although I've read the 49ers are looking at Miller and they pick ahead of us even though some pundits have expressed that picking Miller too early might be a mistake. If Taylor's available at #10 and Miller slips down far enough, or maybe someone like Jabaal Sheard is available for our next pick I could see going that route. Both Miller and Sheard are projected as good picks for a 3-4 D-Sheard is explosive and Miller is a good pass rusher.

As it stands now, Miller is looking like a high-first round pick, and Taylor a second round pick. I think we will miss out on both though, if we wait - Miller will go top 9, and Taylor will go late first, early 2nd - but before us at 42. But like I said before, there's no telling until the combine.

I think NT is a higher priority at this point. Look at the Packers, who set the bar for drafting a 3-4 defense: first priority was BJ Raji, the center-piece. Next was the dominating OLB, Matthews. I think there will be some guys available at 42 to plug in at OLB or DE, and who can contribute immediately - but I don't know about a pass-rusher. We're just going to have to rely on Rak to provide that pass-rush - I think if we get a true NT in the middle, we'll see a lot more hits on the QB.

My preference right now would be Von Miller in the 1st round and Taylor in the 2nd. If Mike wants a QB, he needs to somehow acquire a 3rd or 4th rounder and grab a guy like Ponder or McElroy then.

As much as I LOVE Newton's athleticism, he's simply NOT NFL ready and, if you rush him, he'll definitely tank. I always felt that Shanahan brought Cutler in to play too soon and the temptation would probably be there with any first round QB he might take.

Von Miller in the 1st and Taylor in the 2nd is an ideal scenario, I just don't think it will happen.

The only problem with that, Lanky, is I don't see Taylor dropping far enough for us to grab him with #42. If Taylor and Miller were both still around when we pick, who would you take? I might be tempted to go with Taylor and look at other options just in case Miller went before 42-we also could use a WR, fer instance. As has been mentioned, however there's still the combine, but I just hope there's some serious contingency planning going on about this draft.

Man, I am seriously hating having so few picks right now!

That's what I meant when I said I don't think it will happen - I've said elsewhere I don't think Taylor makes it out of the first round.

I would go with Taylor at 10, personally (unless they are able to trade back to the 18-22 range or so) - he's gonna be a beast. Then take the best available OLB in the second round, *OR* Hankerson from Miami (WR).

Robert Quinn is an intriguing prospect as well - if he had played in 2010, John Harris says he would easily be the #1 overall pick in this year's draft. If he drops to 10th, we'd have to seriously consider taking him.

the biggest mistake would be to reach for a quarterback in a year when there is no clear franchise passer available.

mitigate the risk by looking for a qb in Round 2 or moving up in Round 3.

this draft seems as if there are definite possibilities to improve this team at the top on the DL or at OLB in the 3-4.

we should not fight the draft board.

Some years there are a host of qbs. Other years there are WRs.

This year it appears the depth is there on D in the top 35-40 picks.

and not to beat a dead horse, but we need a new 'center' as well as a new guy 'under center' :D
