50+ Old Man Thread

50? Try 60+!

I actually feel pretty good. I almost never sleep through the night and find myself ready for bed early which then means waking up at 3 or 4 am pretty regularly. I am in the best shape I have been in in about a decade and my weight is as low as it has been since I got out of the Marine Corps in 1993. My BP is *high* enough I am taking a small amount of medication, but otherwise, in terms of health doing pretty well. My hair has been going since I entered my mid-30's but you just accept that at some point.

I have 3 weeks of work left and then I am hanging it up after 44 years of full time employment. I'm ready. I have not really absorbed what never having to go to work again will feel like, but I'm looking forward to trying to get used to it
Congratulations. Retirement is where it's at. Been doing that scene for 2 years this month and while I miss controlling sometimes, I get over it very quickly. :)

I had my yearly visit to the dermatologist today, clean as a whistle... 12 years. Also had my 6 month with my GP today. Labs and CT scan of my chest, and all but one number is great. PSA is still in the acceptable range, but it's slowly crept up over the past year and a half, soo we'll see a urologist shortly. I really can't bitch...

I'm turning 53 in a month. I can't believe how much has changed in the last 10 years. 10 years ago I was running a 5k every morning before work and a 10k after work. Today I can barely walk whenI get up at 3am for my nightly pee. Lol. Ive developed ankle bursitis and its awful!

My daughter just got her bachelors, it took her a little longer but she pushed through. My youngest graduated HS in 2020 and today is finishing his 1st year in his PHD/Doctorate program! Like someone else just posted I cant help but smile when I think of them. Oh, the best part? He is doing this and has not accrued a single dollar of debt!

I got a job in a school district so I now for the first time have a path to retirement. Age + experience = 80 So I have to work another 11 years.

Now Ive been going fishing with my dad lately, after falling in love with fishing again. I was always so busy and we hadnt gone since 2020. He lights up and is definitely in his zone when we're out there. I know he wont be around forever so Im cherishing this time together.

Hello pension, Goodbye tension,
It couldn't come a day too soon, for our brother Boone

I'm so happy to read that you will be retiring soon Boone, you picked the right time of year. I retired the first of May, THIS is the time of year to pull the plug and enjoy the summer. Can't say enough about how great it is to be retired.

What age did you guys retire at?

I'm 61 and a half and contemplating when I'm going to retire.

My wife's father just gave us a large lot of land less than 5 minutes from the beach in the Dominican in Santo Domingo. We're going to build a nice house. Labor and materials are cheap down there so we can get a beautiful house for next to nothing.

I have 5 days of work left - in my life. It's going to be a weird transition but I am ready. I have seen several folks my age (one from high school, another a work associate) pass away this past week. I want to enjoy the rest of my life doing the things I love while I still have good health.

RedWolf - if you CAN retire, you SHOULD retire. Just my 2 cents.

This is where I was at also. My last Director and last VP both passed within a year after their retirement. What's the point of making all that money if you can't enjoy it later on?

I've been retired now for six years and it is pure bliss.

Something that been getting worse as time goes on.... retirement. My dentist of over 30 years retired... my GP will be retiring within a year and a half. Orthopedic surgeon I use retired... Hell, my buddy who's shop I've used since he opened, and have known for 40+ years retired and sold the business. I'm happy folks are getting to enjoy life, but having to start from scratch in so many areas is a bit..... a pain in the ass.

The flip side to this is that your doctor's are being upgraded. Give me a younger doctor who's up to date on the latest medicines and procedures over the grey beard any day.

I agree to an extent, kind of case by case. My GP is actually a pulmonary specialist. He's 4 years younger than me, and anytime I bring up a subject I may have seen online about treatments or procedures, he has only once not already heard about it. He's so on top of it it's scary. He's retiring because he's sick of fighting the system... Every other doctor I see speak so highly of him. He doesn't have an "entourage" doing his job, and actually takes the time to sit and talk to you, never in a rush to get you out the door. Last visit, he stopped me as I was leaving the room to show me a bunch of photos from his trip to Antarctica. He's old school in how he operates, and that's what can't be replaced. He'd be the ultimate house call doc. You're not going to replace someone like that.

Sure, the one doctor ( endocrinologist ) for the type II didn't know that taking ibuprofen for extended periods can raise your blood sugar in some people with type II. She also didn't know about cooking white rice, and then freezing it. The freezing does something to the starch / sugar. Heat it up, and you can pretty much have a lot more rice without effecting your blood sugar. Sure, that's a bit obscure, but she should have known about the ibuprofen at the least IMO.

My new dentist is your flip side big time. All the latest and greatest goodies, right down to a CT scanner, which they used to find a problem they hadn't been able to. She must have dropped a fortune on equipment and training of the staff. She's late 30's, early 40's, so she'll be around for a long time.

I don't blow off the gray beard guys in the least. I was 5 and had a cyst on my right wrist, we went to old doc LaBalbo, likely in his 70's at the time. He sat my at his desk, put my hand so it hung over the edge, and slammed the cyst with a very VERY heavy book... He was in shock a little, as he had never heard a 5 year old cuss like that, but it never came back, which is likely pure luck. Today, god knows how many office visits, co-pays, maybe drain it a couple of times, and then surgery... and it could still come back... cysts have a habit of doing that.

Regarding grey beards, there are always exceptions but generally it's a good thing to have younger doctors.

My biggest issue with my doctor's, given my age, is that I've been with Kaiser Permanente for 35 years and that will stop once my wife retires this year. I'm not looking forward to that, not because of losing my dr, but because Kaiser is awesome. Where else can you go where the dr can send you downstairs for blood work or xrays, and by the time you get back upstairs to the dr, he already has the results.

As a former good golfer I always played the blue tees. At 67 this is now a challenge and I've been considering moving to the whites. Today on the first hole I striped my drive right down the middle, I can't hit it any better, and found myself hitting a fairway wood from 205 yards. I guess I have my answer. :(

At 67 if you can play well from the WHITES you are doing great. Most of us have already moved up to the golds brother.

I am transitioning
