The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

McShay new mock. Before 7: Reese, Bailey, Love, Styles. Downs-Delane go 10 and 11

Washington trades with the Jets, gets a 2nd and 4th and drafts Omar Cooper.
They only get a 2nd and 4th for pick 7? seems lite

I’m hoping all of this smoke is accurate. It’s starting to feel like, if Love makes it past the Titans, that there is a great chance he falls to 7.

Brugler did a 7 rounder, we took Love over Tate.

Downs went to NYG, Styles to DAL at 6 (trade up w CLE).

I would prefer Tate, but would be happy with Love.

Had us taking Hurst at 71

Love in the 1st and Hurst at 71 is my wet dream.

Watched some draft takes from insider types, including one from an ex-Titans GM who knows the people in that building and Saleh well. Long story short, Titans might take Styles. If not the Giants might. Dallas supposedly interested in trading up for him.

Adding to all, doubtful Styles lands at 7. Having said that just listened to a Keim podcast, and at this stage of the game he typically can make a good guess at a minimum ballpark some things. So today he did a podcast on defense. He strongly hinted on that side of the ball, he believes they like Sonny Styles and Mansoor Delane the most. If so Delane likely is the default pick. I am guessing tomorrow he does the offensive players.

He also hinted they likely see Delane > Downs.

Styles to the Titans and Downs or Tate to the Giants would line things up exactly as I’d like to drop Love to us.

Also listened to the Keim podcast. He really seemed to be leaning into Styles and Delane. And explicitly said he thought they’d prefer Delane to Downs because of the positional value. Based on listening to him, I’d guess that they prefer Love as a 1st option and one of Delane or Stules if he’s not there. But I’m not sure where he would say Tate falls on their list.

I’d be pretty thrilled with Delane.

Delane and Tate appear to be need picks who can contribute immediately. While Styles could end up being a real impact player but it will take time. As someone pointed out DQ is on borrowed time,
AP needs a winner. I fear they will pass over the better long term player for these reasons.

I was listening to the Joe Klatt Show with with Daniel Jeremiah, he said he knows there are teams that have Thieneman over Downs and some have McNeil-Warren in the running. This competition at the position is part of the reason some show Downs falling.

He thinks there's a good chance Thieneman goes 12 to Dallas

I really don’t necessarily feel that Styles is better than Delane. Didn’t allow more than one reception to any receiver last year, in the SEC. Zero TD’s allowed. More passes defensed than 1st downs allowed. Ran a 4.36. Is sticky in coverage. Man/zone versatile.

I’d bet NFL teams like him more than the media is talking about him. I’m could see him going before 7.

Because its an early 2nd -- if I recall seeing somewhere the even exchange is for just a 2nd, so at least on one of those point scales the 4th rounder is a topper-bonus.

Ive seen some having Theneman over Downs also. That's what I keep telling people that a lot of these guys are similar to some people so trading down to 16 is not too far for the right deal

Yep, I talked about this earlier today. Interested to hear his podcast on offense. Wonder how Styles and Delane stacks against Love-Tate.

Exactly what I said- I see the value from an organizational perspective. But I have read more than one post referencing value from how the players will view the team. Again, it’s not free agency, it’s the draft. How the players feel is wholly irrelevant.

You're not thinking long term/big picture.

Every free agent every year was once draft eligible, they'll remember the teams that create a positive environment and the ones who treat them like commodities instead of humans.

Keim did say they like Downs but felt more likely in a trade down

Yup and he spoke of that as well. It is possible. I hate because I loved Theineman when he was an early 2nd on all the boards and thought he'd be a steal at that pointt

I'm warming to Downs and souring on Styles I think. Downs feels like he will go a long way to solve a lot of the issues we have had on D for years - communication/organising and dealing with quality Tight Ends. Styles to me feels like a LB who tackles like a Safety (being dragged along) and Downs is a Safety tackling like a LB. Safety being a key role in the new scheme just feels like they should lean that way too. If Love is there I take him, then Downs, and if it's just Tate/Styles/ Delane left I'm really not enamoured enough with any of them to not give serious consideration to a trade down. The front office also seem to be doing a lot of work on guys who will only be possibilities if we do trade down.

Scott is a slot safety / box SS. He is not a nickel corner.

There difference is coverage ability and what he is asked to do on a regular basis.

If we took Scott at 71, we’d need to use him more like a safety than a nickel corner.
Poor man's Downs (which is not bad)

Nothing like Downs. This dude is a hitter and ball hawk. Downs can hit, but is more cerebral and more risk averse. Different animals.

Listening to Keim it sounds like Styles is worth a high pick if he can rush the passer, he mentions having a the LB coach from OSU on who said Styles would play the Reese role if Reese was not on the team. To me, that sounds like a big projection.

Styles looks a lot like Tremaine Edwards to me. Both great athletes, better v pass than run.

I'd be OK w Styles, but I have him after Love, Tate and Downs.

Trade talks

From Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25): Can you walk us through what the next week and change looks like? Are the frameworks of trades being hammered out before the draft during this window? That seems especially important with the first round being reduced to eight minutes per pick.

Paul, a lot of conceptual conversations are happening. Teams do dozens of mock draft simulations based on what their top guys and their scouts have heard across the NFL to get a better feel for different scenarios. As part of that process, if there’s a guy a team is targeting, that they might not be able to land where they’re picking, they’ll start talking with teams ahead of them, on what it might take to move up into those slots.

From there, you have a baseline, so when you get on the clock, you’re not starting from scratch (though there are examples where curveballs are thrown on draft night, and teams are starting from zero on certain in-the-moment trades).

Styles when used as a blitzer the season before had 6 sacks, not that much of a projection
