Agree entirely that this is what’s going on. Because now that they had their first and second tier (and third tier?) WR targets in FA spurn them, they aren’t guaranteed to find a solution. It’s a little out of their hands now. They could be shut out of having a chance at Tate, even Tyson (if they even like him). They could not be in a place to draft the other late 1st/early-to-mid 2nd types. They might miss out on top of 3rd level talents just due to bad luck or inability to trade around where they desire.
Quinn’s talking himself into alternative silver linings bc they aren’t in control at this point.
I think if we’re being honest, looking back they maybe would choose to go harder at a Nailor type and skip wasting time on the bigger names with other preferred destinations. They can’t make that choice now, but it’s clear they need to scramble a bit and even then it’s not guaranteed they can fix this.
Not ideal, especially after last offseason’s lack of WR work. They certainly tried really hard this FA period, and I’m sure they’ll do so again in the draft. But trying hard and failing isn’t going to save their jobs if they don’t find a way to support their QB more this season.
Yeah agree. It would be one thing if this was year 1 on this front but if they fail in year 3 to give Jayden weapons and it derails the season -- IMO this regime needs to go. Especially if you factor how aggressive Peters' compatriot GMs have been from that same draft to load up their young QBs.
Feels like their strategy this time was:
A. Pierce target #1
B. Doubs target #2
C. Jennings target #3
And heck they will land one AND Aiyuk who will be released around FA. So they will be loaded. And they will land one of these guys because they will outbid if need be.
And heck if anything goes awry
A. Tate at 7.
But the best laid plans, fell apart
Pierce stayed in Indy, Doubs chose to go to NE, Jennings has his head in the clouds and wants 20 million. The 49ers decided to play hardball with Aiyuk. And heck now it looks like Tate won't get past Cleveland.
So there is a least a scenario where they might strike out on all of this. And hearing Quinn explain how it can work with the current WR room, it was too detailed for me to see it as some BS I have my players back rhetoric. It sounded like they convinced themselves it won't be too bad if it unfolds like this.
My guess is WR is hot on their agenda this draft. But Peters does stick to his guns on BPA so they might not take one. Plus the deeper down you go in the draft the more likely whatever WR they take is a project.
As for me, if this season goes south because of WR, there is no coming back from it, I am not interested in a discussion when the season ends if they missed the playoffs about Peters did so well in so many spots, give him year 4 and he will fix WR.
