The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Love or Bailey to me is fine at #7.

Tate and Downs to me are excellent picks, both are players that are mature on the field and likely to come in and make an immediate impact.

Some of the NFL talking heads seem to think the picks 1-6 are all set but history shows that's not always the case.

All Washington has to see is ONE of these teams go in another direction than expected and then one of these coveted players expected to be gone will be available.

And let's remember most of the clubs drafting ahead of Washington (with the possible exception of the Giants with Harbaugh) are USUALLY drafting in the top 10 because they don't have quality GMs.

Yeah, and who’s to say Harbaugh is any good as a GM it’s his first time doing it. I don’t think it would be a big mistake though for any of these teams to go OL, but it sure would help us a lot!

Yeah to me its

1. Love
2. Styles
3. Tate

I am thinking Reese and Bailey are gone so they are not in my mind with this exercise

Then a peg drop off
4. Downs
5. Delane

I think we are on the same page on most of the top 10 types except: I am higher on Bailey and Tate than you are and lower on Bain.
I don’t think we’re far off on Tate. I like him. And if Love isn’t there I wouldn’t be mad at getting Tate.

I think it’s more:

You’re high on Bailey, I’m not.

I’m high on Bain, you’re not.

You’re a touch higher on Tate.

We are just about the same on Love, Styles, Downs.

I am higher on Delane.

But ya, I think we’re in the same ballpark except Bailey/Bain

I don't know if you are higher on Delane, I haven't watched him yet. But i am not as high on drafting a corner as i am a WR or edge as far as premium spots. Corners I find the hardest to grade without coaches film-all 22. And its an odd position because arguably its the most variable spot where aside from the elite players, the good to very good ones tend to have up and down years.

As for Bain, I just don't know. But I am on the record as to not knowing versus being negative.

He's not the GM although I'm pretty sure that they will let him pick his guy or have Supreme input as his 1st pick, especially in the top 5 after you handed him the keys

Interesting. From what I have seen Styles is the one player in that grouping that could turn out to be a tweener and disappoint. He's 6'5 and 244 but he's never put up the kind of production numbers you are talking about in the Downs discussion of why he may simply be very good to excellent rather than a consistent pro bowler or all-pro. There are questions about where exactly he fits in the NFL.

I don't quite buy the argument that some make that a player like Styles doesn't need a position and the DC can just move him around from edge, to linebacker to covering guys in the slot and then he becomes this monster Swiss Army knife.

Not many players envisioned in that role are actually as successful making an impact as fans tend to think coming in.

If I am the GM at #7 and have the Tate/Downs choice or Love/Downs, ANY of those three players has the chance to come in and make an immediate impact at a set position they are ideally suited to play at the NFL level.

Of the 4 players in question Styles has IMO the greatest bust potential.

The way you describe Styles fits really Reese IMO not Styles.

Styles isn't a man looking for a position, he's a middle LB who wore the green dot, called the plays. If you like Downs which clearly you do -- you should like Styles IMO even more. Styles at LB is almost at Downs level mentally, but is the absolutely physical freak that Downs isn't even close to being.

Styles also has intangible and leardership skills through the roof. these aren't the type of guys who bust.

His read and react skills are almost at Downs level -- watch the Indiana game for example, he's the dude that's part of the action on almost every play, more so than Downs actually, he had almost zero missed tackles in the whole season. He's a freak athlete. Smart dude.

And just an off the charts leader on and off the field. Culture setter type of player who can call the defense for hopefully 10 plus years and has the freakish ability to both help shut down the run and cover TEs, etc.

2026 NFL Draft: Sonny Styles’ Ohio State LB Coach Reveals What Makes Him 'Very Scary'

"He has a really uncanny sense of when it’s time to pull your trigger," Laurinaitis told me.

But Laurinaitis pointed to Styles’ approach and processing ability as evidence of his desire to be "special."

As the green dot in Ohio State’s defense, Styles communicated everything. With the OSU offense on the field, the defensive coaching staff would watch the previous defensive series together on their tablets. By the time the coaches finished talking, Styles already had a tablet in hand, knowing the corrections that needed to be made.

"I’ll just go over to him and be like, ‘Hey, you see play 3?' [He’s like,] ‘Yeah, I already saw. I have to get here or so-and-so has got to get here, or maybe I should make this stunt call,’" Laurinaitis told me. "It’s already been processed in his brain, so it’s more collaborative.

"He didn’t need a ton of reps at practice to go see [a tweak]. He would just go in the next series, and you could expect him to adjust and start changing up the stunts just because he’s super smart."

A five-star recruit in high school, Styles played his first two college seasons as a safety. But Laurinaitis, who was an OSU graduate assistant in 2023, never projected him as a safety at the NFL level. He saw a future first-round pick as an "elite cover linebacker." He’d tell him, too.

Laurinaitis, the former NFL linebacker and Ohio State great, saw Styles as a player with the size and skills to make a seamless transition.

Over the past two years as a linebacker, Styles recorded 182 tackles (17 for loss), seven sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception.

"Every NFL person I’ve talked to about Sonny Styles, I’ve said, ‘Look, he’s only played linebacker two seasons of his entire life,’" Laurinaitis told me. "So you’re getting a guy who’s going to get way more comfortable [because] the game is finally slowing down for him at that level on the defense. You’re not getting a fully formed guy yet, which I think is very scary."

In addition to Styles being an incredible athlete, Laurinaitis said the team that drafts him will also be getting a "first class" individual.

"He balances that looseness of clowning around and having fun with the guys with this seriousness of locking in and when to lock in," Laurinaitis told me. "He has a good feel for both. So you’re never too uptight at practice, but I think he’s tuned into what’s happening to everybody around him. He’s always paying attention. He’s always inquiring.

"He’ll be at every single community outreach and charity function that an organization does. And then you match all the freakish athletic ability to it with the work ethic, you’re like, ‘Holy smokes, no wonder this dude is such a special talent and person.’"

As I said, I’m sure it matters. It always does. But how much? And is that more important than the best weapon in the draft.

Of course I’d love Delane. But not at the expense of Love. Probably not Styles either, but I’m listening. Reese is a “if we use him right no… if not, yes”

Oh, I would 100% choose Love over Delane. Love is my top draft fantasy by a mile. And if there was an established edge, maybe them too. And I wouldn’t be mad at Tate over Delane, but I’m not sure that would be my choice. I’m just saying, that I’d take a borderline elite CB over a lot of these other less premium positions. Delane over Downs, for instance. And I’d have to think about Reese and Styles. Reese worries me because he’s transitioning to full time edge and I think there is risk there. I also see some chance of Styles being a bust. Elite tools, and was very good in college, but I think elite instincts at LB is one of the most important traits, and Styles hasn’t even been playing LB for that long.

I couldn’t figure out which prospect that BD was calling low floor/high ceiling. I thought it was Styles but it couldn’t have been.

It was Styles who he thought was the most boom-bust

This is just the craziest draft that I can remember. After Vegas, I literally don't know what anyone is going to do, including us and in most cases it's not just between 2 guys. It's like every team has like 4 plus guys who they may choose.

The only one kinda close is the Jets who seem to most people are between Reese and Bailey but I wouldn't be shocked if they went a different direction, including trading down. Everything is up in the air this year

ok, gotcha, i was referring to his post on the draft page. Reading the FA thread and combining it with here, feels like Styles he's referencing.

I thought it was in the draft thread (crazy me 🤣). Explains why I had difficulty finding it.

Sad but true

As of right now, I think that you have to add Jayden to the list with Trent. I also think that he showed in year 1 that he can be great even if this pick fails but considering we had the 2nd pick, I'm not going to give a ton of credit for that pick, either way.

The Bill pick may turn out to be a gem to boost APs stock but as of right now, he needs to nail this one and since he is probably a little safer than DQ, I actually think that he will definitely have the final say on this pick because his rep and maybe his job depends on it.

I took the post as Jayden was included with Trent.

But just in general the point feeds off the idea that arguably no team over the last two decades or so has been worse at finding elite players.

She said we haven't really hit on a dominant long term first rounder since Trent.
You cannot include jayden in that list because of the words "long term"

Sadly the only two hall of fame players we've drafted since gibbs one were champ Bailey and Trent Williams and both wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of here.

Sean Taylor is a what might have been.

We desperately need star power on this team that doesn't fizzle out after a good rookie year.

I don't get into all the media types that talk about how many #1 picks Washington made out on when drafting at #18 but all the busts we have had when drafting in the 20's :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

That's just to draw eyeballs.

I saw one article that I bypassed that talked about the Washington wide receiver curse from the 2008 draft.

Who cares? Different owner, different GM, different Head Coach.
