The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Dead last to third in three years? Incredible. Clearly shows the ownership cares.

As for the finances, I believe two team spokesmen went out of their way to tell contradict Sheehan when he was questioning how much money they had to spend. I'd be stunned if they didn't spend, all signs seem to point to it

Agree with all of this. And kudos to Josh Harris for his efforts

I have to believe if they think they can substantially improve the roster by spending up to the limits of the cap, that they would do that?
That's been my assumption too - but I just had in the back of my mind how AP has looked a bit conservative (my view) although thinking about it, he inherited a very average roster. The strategy back then looked to be mainly short term "non splash" contracts to begin the build.

I guess that's been coloring my thoughts somewhat - I definitely hope for a more aggressive approach this time around & I hope that's what we get - evolve the strategy & spend the $$ to get what JD needs - get us winning again.

With only a few draft picks this year they are likely going to shopping for left overs once again, maybe even more than ever. Hopefully they don't spend much of it all on 1 year contract 30+ year olds again. Peters can talk up should be retired guys like Ertz and Wagner all he wants but it's hopefully only to decrease the leverage FA's have in negotiating contracts.

Voice_of_Reason I had the same gut reaction to some of Peter’s comments that you did and talked about it a little on last nights pod. I would add I think they may bring Bobby Wagner back and, hell, they may not even move on from Lattimore.

I am hoping he is just keeping things close to the vest. We have to get younger and faster and stop sitting around hoping project players like Sinnott, McCaffrey, and Lane turn out to be stars.

There are things that concern me about Peters. I think he may be a bit stubborn. He also seems determined not to overspend as a big priority (and sometimes to get difference makers in free agency, you HAVE to outbid other teams and overspend).

We’ll see what happens over the next couple of months.
I am so confused by the Lattimore thing. I thought there was actually reporting saying they had informed him they were moving on.

I think the Lattimore thing is they’re trying to find a sucker willing to trade a conditional 7th in 2029 for Lattimore. But they’re not going to find anybody willing to do that and then they’re going to release him.

I’m ok with bringing back Wagner as long as he’s not the 100% starter on all downs. If they use him in the middle on first down that’s fine. If they expect him to play on 3rd down that’s a mistake.

I’d prefer just to go all in on a younger player but I understand wanting a HOF veteran around the building.

I thought I read it was an injury settlement thing. But apparently AP is just Bruce Allen and Vinny Cerrato standing on his shoulders in a trench coat...

The surveys were conducted between November 2 and December 11, during our 7-game losing streak.

Don't they save cap space if they can cut him after he's declared healthy? That seems to be the likely hold up here.... if hanging onto him for a bit means they save cap space, seems like a good decision.

Listening to Keim right now, he said they did it as a favor to Biadasz to give him a week-plus before free agency begins. He also said this was not a cap-related move, and it was more performance based.

So the OC, DC and HC grades were for Kliff, Whitt and obviously Quinn. The home field was rated a B+ despite us having no real home field advantage…

I don’t know. This seems kind of throwaway.

But the owner rating does seem to mean something. So despite the weirdness of these overall grades; that one does stick out as a major win for this franchise.

I’ll take it.

I don’t think Biadasz was great. But he only allowed 3 sacks last year, I think? And he’s better than anything else we currently have. So the question is again, why now? We have to sign a center. We will need to put significant resources in the OL this offseason that could have gone elsewhere.

Looks like they are going to have to lean on Allegretti in one of the two vacant spots and make a big signing for the other?

Plus… whatever we pay the guy I’m not supposed to mention anymore.

I guess at some level you can say ‘what a nice thing for them to do so he can look for another starting gig somewhere’. But you might also say ‘why are we going to release a guy who was good enough to start 31 games for us. He would’ve an extremely valuable safety net as a backup’.

I mean, the priority is winning NFL games right, not doing players favors?

It's the quality of the field. Steelers were rated poorly, despite having a decided home field advantage. Even in the nadir of an awful 7-game losing streak, the players were still positive of the coaching staff. That's not nothing.

Probably why we got such high grades - we don’t put emphasize on winning.

I somewhat agree. But if the players were positive about the coaching staff why did we dislodge a good portion of it?

It just doesn’t make sense. Maybe this report card has always been like this and I just didn’t notice.

This sort of treatment though resonates. I know people want to completely dismiss Quinn's grade because it doesn't fit with their "Quinn Sucks and he ran over my dog" narrative, but it does matter.

Because they treated players well and with respect, it just didn't work out. It would have been real easy for this to go sour with how bad things went last year, but it didn't.

I wasn’t referring in any way to Quinn's player grade. I don’t really care about how popular the HC is. Sean Payton is probably one of the top 3 HCs in the league (and may be the best) and he isn’t at the top of the popularity list.

Nothing wrong with being popular but it’s like loving the uniforms of a franchise that sucks on the field. It only gets you so far.

This is made up. I don’t think Quinn sucks. I think he has created a mess and I absolutely question his plan. But he has a good defensive mind and by all accounts is a good guy.

I’m not sure he has the edge to get it done in the current situation and I have very legit concerns about the FO. More so than Quinn at the moment.

But I don’t think he sucks. I think if he leaves here he’s going to find success somewhere in whatever role.

I’m hoping his gambles pay off - but I’m concerned.

I just don’t think an A+ is an accurate encapsulation of what Quinn is as a HC.

Grades about how players are treated is wonderful for the franchise, for sure. But I don’t think that grade is indicative of much other than “he’s a good guy”.

In the NFL, the goal is to win. Yes, people need to be treated well. But the expectation should be a higher standard.

These report cards seem very surface level and not an accurate representation of much.

He's the outlier. The vast majority of the top coaches in the league are at the top of the list: McVay, Macdonald, Reid (all of whom are better than Payton), Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, Kevin O'connell

Totally agree with this sentiment, but I also think hiring Quinn is kind of the original sin that put us in this mess.

Pairing a defensive HC with a generational QB talent like Jayden Daniels was organizational malpractice. It dooms JD5 to a transient offensive staff...either the OC is so good they get hired away, so bad they get fired, or so Kliff that they mutually break-up. Either way, Jayden loses his play-caller, and we're stuck in a cycle of instability where offensive scheme, play-calling, and player roles are always changing.

Makes me wonder if Blough really doesn't like something about the way Biadasz would fit into what his plan is on O...because it seems a little crazy to cut an adequate to good starting C, who isn't breaking the bank, with no player obviously ascending into that role.

No, people think he sucks. Maybe you don't but, yeah, people here definitely think he sucks and should fired immediately.
