The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Probably why we got such high grades - we don’t put emphasize on winning.
I have also been asking "why not trade Biadasz" but to play a bit of devil's advocate:
it's not wrong to maintain a good rep for taking care of players who are good to/for you. That's what earns you cred and good long-term contracts from players. Yes, Terry burned us there, but that is actually an example of what happens when you don't have that rep.

So, sometimes starting a new rep is going to look like that. I don't know. I feel like looking at the Pats in their dynasty years, the Steelers over the years, teams that had a lot of success at least making playoffs and/or beyond - they did do stuff like this from time-to-time, and they did things the other way as well. I think right now, maybe we haven't seen as much "the other way" from this org so it is a bit jarring to see this part when we have so, so many needs. Which brings us back to: they shouldn't have done this without a solid idea of what they CAN do (to replace) at a minimum.

The problem is that while I am glad we treat players well, is that this is a business. It’s not HS or low level college. The goal is to win and treat people with as much respect and dignity as you can.

If we were coming off of a second positive season a move like that makes more sense to me. But coming off a bad one with a lot of holes I think its a mistake (to be clear, I don’t think treating a player well is a mistake, but I don’t think keeping a player who is under contract that we may need is mistreating someone, either)

No, people think he sucks. Maybe you don't but, yeah, people here definitely think he sucks and should fired immediately.

I literally have not seen one person make that argument.

He said people here are calling for it

Are you familiar with hyperbole?

Obviously it wasn't an exact quote, however, there is definitely a sentiment that he isn't good and should have been fired is pervasive. To say otherwise would be entirely naïve.

There are a plethora of voices here that are self-admittedly ‘out’ on Quinn and just waiting to celebrate the event of his firing. Is that the same as he sucks and should be fired?

Not exactly but close enough.

Recency bias is both real and spectacular.

(FTR I have no problem with that. The opportunity to express one’s feelings is why places like this exist).

Eh. I think Quinn should have been out… because he fired both coordinators two years in and it’s easier to just start over and allows you to get better coaching staff talent. I also think an offensive HC is better for a rookie QB/franchise level QB long term.

I don’t think Quinn should have been fired for last season. He earned another shot.

I blame AP for this whole thing more than Quinn, to be honest. And I’m not out on him yet, either. Though I’m getting there.

I think there is a big difference between feeling DQ may not have what it takes to be a successful long-term HC and believing that he has made some questionable decisions and calling for him to be fired. I have not seen anyone call for him to be fired here. I guess one man’s ‘hyperbole’ is another man’s ’making up shit to be dramatic’…

That’s fair

I'm assuming there's a typo here? Otherwise, I am impressed with the double-speak, real Twitter Politics level good 🤣

There's naive then there's obtuse. I think I'll stick to the free agency and draft threads.

It’s not double speak. Read it.

I think AP screwed the pooch FOR Quinn.

I think Quinn should have a chance. But that chance left when we had to reset the coaching staff…

I think keeping Quinn hurt our chances at landing quality assistant coaches.

I think AP forced Quinn’s hand on Kliff (you don’t, that’s fine) and was one of the reasons we moved on from Kliff.

Circumstances dictated that Quinn should have been let go - but that’s not a shot at Quinn. Quinn will succeed anywhere he goes. He’s a quality defensive mind.

But losing both coordinators, having trouble landing high end talent as coaches is problematic for a franchise.

If Blough doesn’t work, we’re starting over next year a year later in the window.

I don’t lay a lot of this at Quinn’s feet. It’s just because of AP’s failures, we may have needed a reset. Does that make more sense?

This is fair. This describes me (although I don’t think he “sucks” and I felt this way after 2024 as well). I don’t harp on it constantly because that’s unproductive, I even argued that I completely understood and agreed that Quinn deserved year #3, even if I expected it to end in tears.

But yeah I don’t agree with the characterization that most Quinn critics think he “sucks and should be fired immediately”. Those people are definitely out there but I more so see them on twitter in the comments fighting it out with countless bots, not fleshing out their thoughts with rational posts in smaller communities like this where you can really dig into someone’s beliefs.

I feel like Quinn helped screw his own pooch by picking Whitt, and that Peters failed to build the appropriate weapons around Jayden.

I would have been fine with 4 wins on the back of a Bengals level offense, with an offseason to fix the defense. But now we are fixing both and have a million holes to fill.

And I’ve hated the coaching hire process. Especially the HC process. I feel like they should have targeted a guy and hired him instead of the long arduous, “we have to go through the process”. It seems like that clearly hurt them. And also, it makes me wonder tha cost us Ben Johnson on the back of his, “basketball guys” comment.

I do think we can overcome having new coaches if we are super aggressive in bringing in high end personnel. Despite the injuries, and Jayden, if we don’t bring in a good bit of top notch talent, I think we are a middle of the road team. One luvu level offensive and defensive FA l, and the number 7 pick, aren’t going to elevate us.

My biggest knock on AP is why he would hire a defensivly minded HC when drafting JD. It's almost like his left hand didn't know what his right hand was going to do.

Our experiences here definitely vary then. The thoughts posted here are unquestionably more eloquent (or at least more wordy) than platforms like twitter but the substances of the opinions are not really all that different.

I don’t think that ‘most’ critics think Quinn sucks and should be fired but there are certainly many critics here who do.

Your experience is your experience, I can’t disagree with that.

But I think a lot of the anti-Quinn sentiment still comes from people who have a lot of caveats to their stance:

> “I understand it would make us look bad and he needs at least 3 years”

> “We never should’ve hired him but now we have to ride it out for X number of years”

> “Quinn will likely earn a firing but Peters hasn’t helped him”

> “If we were going to start over at both coordinator spots anyways, and Quinn’s hot seat perception screws us on assistant hires anyways, we should’ve just ripped off the bandaid even if in a vacuum Quinn would deserve at least year 3 (I think this is KDawg here)”

So the number of actual “Quinn sucks and should be fired immediately” (as in already fired this past January) isn’t as high here. But I could be wrong.

Maybe that feels like a technicality, but I don’t really think it is.

And I don’t think referring to it as recency bias is fair for most of those people, as the Quinn hire skepticism remained from day one even through the 2024 success for many.

Caveats are generally utilized as a means to protect personal positions in the event that results are different from what one expects. 😉

Quinn wasn’t my top choice by a long shot…I wanted MacDonald or Vrabel (both defensive guys). So I am far from a Quinn acolyte.

As far as my comment referencing recency bias…I don’t remember much or any of the over-the-top criticism prominent now toward Quinn at the end of the 2024 season. But, as always, YMMV.
