The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Watching some more G. Bernard I think he's perfect for the crowd who is fine with the idea of let the other young QBs eat cake, we got Jayden and he can figure it out with lesser help.

That is, Bernard in the third would be one of my favorite picks depending on what else they do at WR. He fits the idea of Jayden doesn't need exciting toys like Caleb or name that young QB -- but he's competent enough and doesn't suck. As I mentioned previously about him, he's a rich man's Zaccheus IMO.

Watching WRs over the years to my eyes, he's a rare do it all, high floor WRs, not killer at any one thing, but decent at everything. Good route runner. Good blocker. Good hands. Good YAC guy. Similar idea to Sarratt who I also would like in the third.

But if Keim is on to something as them wanting a stretch the field burner, neither one fits that.

The combine can shift things for this WR corp, so the following weekend would be a better gauge

I prefer Bernard over Surratt, but I agree with your assessment of them. To me in the ideal scenario they are a number 3 receiver. You can get by with them as your number 2 receiver, but I think they project as low end number 2 receivers--guys who are good at the ordinary down to down stuff, but who cannot necessarily do the difficult stuff for you--separate quickly against tight man in a 3rd and short or get explosive plays in the passing game. I consider those guys low end 2's, high ends 3's.

Yeah the reason why I say he's the perfect WR for those who yawn at my complaint about how other teams have much more ugency about helping their young QBs with weapons then this team does -- he fits their scenario perfectly.

A. He's not an exciting fancy weapon or anything explosive

but..

B. He's very dependable and well rounded.

So for those who don't feel a need to give Jayden Michelin star restaurant food and are more than happy with something like Outback -- Bernard fits that, very solid.

I am not in that camp personally. But Bernard wouldn't be IMO embarassing like some of the other WRs Jayden had to deal with last season.

I like Lemon as a player over Tyson. What I wrestle with is slot WR value versus outside WR. D. Boston IMO is in that conversation, too. Unless Tate bombs the combine, it feels like he's gone before 7. And if so and WR is in play it would likely be those 3 WRs in consideration.

Going back to who can beat tight man coverage on third and medium or fourth and short and who can create explosive plays and who can make the everydown plays:

Everydown plays: I think all three can make the everydown plays but Lemon may be the best at it as he is best at forcing missed tackles and in college he was the best at racking up stats.

Big Plays: I think Tate is clear and far away the best at making downfield catches.

Separating against tight man coverage quickly: I think Jordan Tyson has the edge here.

Daniel Jeremiah says the Commanders need to take an EDGE rusher with the No. 7 overall pick

The Commanders will have temptations with the No. 7 overall pick with both offensive and defensive prospects, depending on who falls. Ben Standig from “The Last Man Standig Podcast” asked NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah who the Commanders should take in the first round, and he kept it very simple.

“I think it all starts, though, with guys who can win up front,” Jeremiah said. “So even with all the design of it [Daronte Jones’ defense], I still think you want guys who can win one-on-one as pass rushers, and I think that’s the biggest need for this team. So I would love for Rueben Bain to be there. I don’t think [David] Bailey or [Arvell] Reese will be there as we get closer, but we’ll see. I mean, if you land any of those three guys, I’d be elated. If you couldn’t pull one of those guys, then [Caleb] Downs is someone who can kind of create the chaos, or orchestrate the chaos, as someone who’s highly, highly intelligent.”

“You know, everybody’s going to have a need for that and use for that. But I think you know, as complex as you want to get, having guys that can win up front on the defensive line, when you get them those opportunities to rush one on one with the scheme is big. And then I think having, you know, smart guys, who can play the ball, and kind of orchestrate things, I think there’s value there as well. So they’re in a good spot. The good thing is, good news, bad news. Bad news is, you’ve got a lot of needs. The good news is you’re definitely going to fill one of them here.”

I am as open as i can ever recall as to who they should take at 7.

If it ends up a WR guessing it ends up Tyson or Lemon. I think Tate depending on the combine it likely gone.

But am good with Downs, Love. Whatever edge rusher falls to 7 if one does, even Bain albiet I am sure about him. And I can live with Lemon or Tyson. Even Delane.

Tough right now to piss me off with what happens at 7. Maybe Faulk would piss me off a little. :p

I think because so many players are arguably close, needs will creep in to the top 5 and playing off of that I suspect 2 among the 3 edge players are gone. But one will remain among Reese (if seen as edge), Bain, Bailey.

Saw Harmon and some others going back and forth about Tyson and I think they may have pinpointed my main issue with him. Some say he’s explosive on the first level and gets open easily, which may be true. But it was pointed out that he’s got a little fancy foot Jerry Jeudy to his game that also may not translate—meaning sometimes he’s doing too much firing his feet and dancing before his stem in a way that looks good, but doesn’t translate to good route-running or getting open in the NFL.

I think that explains some of the disconnect where some people think he’s explosive in tight spaces and moves differently than the other guys, but he isn’t as good after the catch as you’d expect for that sort of prospect. He’s doing a lot with his feet without accomplishing much, sometimes

I watched four games of Caleb Banks — the 2024 matchups against Georgia and LSU, and the 2025 games against LSU and Tennessee. That’s four games against strong competition with plenty of current and future NFL talent across the line. Banks missed most of the 2025 season. The LSU 2025 game was when he got injured, and the Tennessee 2025 game was his first game back after about a 10-week layoff (second to last game of the year). He looked a little sluggish against Tennessee, but that felt like rust more than anything else. He had solid performances against Georgia (2024) and Tennessee (2025), and he was very dynamic in both LSU games. The biggest thing I noticed was real improvement from 2024 to 2025 in his pass-rush approach. In 2024, if his first move didn’t win, the rep often died. In the 2025 LSU game, he was stacking second and third moves and working through a sequence. That’s a major developmental step. Overall, I think Banks is really good. Top-15 worthy in my opinion because he can defend the run and rush the passer.

Run Defense: Banks has strong natural traits. His punches are violent and jolt offensive linemen. He can lock out, stack, and shed effectively. He has quick twitch and can shoot gaps when opportunities present themselves. He can handle double teams and uses a hip drop (dropping his inside hip/knee to anchor) to absorb force. He’s a good run defender, though I wouldn’t call him elite yet. There are three areas that need work: First, pad level. He consistently plays high. I’d put his pad level around a 5 out of 10. His ankle and hip flexibility are solid, but his knee bend isn’t great. He took a helmet to the stomach at the goal line, got displaced on a few snaps, and even got pancaked against LSU in 2025 — all tied to playing high. Second, tackling. He missed four tackles across the four games. He needs to finish better one-on-one in the hole. Third, disengagement timing. While he can stack and fully extend well, he can sometimes be slow shedding once he’s in that stack position. That said, he’s still good against the run. He holds his ground well, maintains gap integrity most of the time, and has a lot of natural strength. He reminds me of how Logan Paulsen describes Javon Kinlaw — tremendous natural strength but pad level inconsistencies. He’s also very versatile. He can line up anywhere from 0 out to 5 technique.

Pass Rush: This is where the real growth showed up. In 2024, he had moves. In 2025, he had a plan. That’s a big difference. In 2025, you saw him stack moves — inside-out, outside-in, setting up oversets. He used club-rip, arm-over, chop-rip, hump move, forklift, long arm (speed to power), swim, and spin. The key difference was sequencing them rather than just throwing out a first move. When you combine that with his natural strength and quick twitch, he becomes a real problem. His hip and ankle flexibility are solid but not elite. He can reduce surface area and swivel his hips, and he can turn tight corners at times. I’d say his flexibility is slightly better than Lee Hunter’s, though still not elite. His pure speed-to-power is solid but not really his foundation. He’s more dangerous when working combinations. He also showed good awareness — sniffed out a screen against Georgia. He seemed to call his own number a couple times against LSU in 2024, including one where they got caught on a draw.

Overall: Banks is a pretty ideal modern defensive tackle — above average against the run and capable of legitimate pass-rush production. I wouldn’t take him at #7, but in a small trade down to around 13, he would absolutely be on my board. I don’t know that I’d lock him in at 13 no matter what, but he’d be worth the pick. In a larger trade down to around 21, he could actually represent good value. To me, he’s a high-floor, high-upside interior defender with real growth between 2024 and 2025.

I watched two videos of Banks. DaftonDraft did one video over the summer of him with the two games from 2024 and then did a second in December in 2025. Here is the first third or so of the video from December 2025 video....

I was bothered by the David Bailey "dominated" top tackles phrasing from DJ, so I went back and watched the Utah game again... This time charting him.

David Bailey:

Defensive Left (Fano's side)
5 run plays
14 pass plays
2 sacks (both clean up after initial pressure came from elsewhere and NOT on Fano)
1 hurry (not on Fano)
Doubled Twice
Tackle (vs. run)
Elite spin that shook Fano

Defensive Right (Lomu's side)
5 run plays
12 pass plays
Pancaked once
1 hurry

In total he was completely displaced out of his gap in the run game in 4 of his 10 run reps.

Other than the elite spin and some hustle sacks, he was non existent. The first sack started with Fano blocking him, but a free runner came through and Fano tried to pick that up instead and left Bailey unblocked. The other sack was another where the QB was pressured and Bailey made a hustle play getting in position.

I don't think he was so bad that you write him off. He showed some elite traits that are worth drafting in the top ten during this game.

But to say he "dominated" top tackles? This game is an example with two that he didn't do much of anything against.

I think Bailey played decently against Utah but I don't want to beat a dead horse, to each their own. Heck out of respect to my favorite draft analyist, Sikkema and also KDawg, I've become chill about Reuben Bain's short arms. I am not pushing him but I'll be good if they took him.

Pre combine, i don't get the vibe that Bailey is going to be available at 7 so I suspect its a moot point.

I caught up with a Logan Paulsen podcast and he said something that another anaylist said they are hearing which is Reese is a projection, and some GM's don't like to bank on projections. Paulsen wasn't echoing what he was hearing but watched Reese and doesn't think he's a top 10 pick. This sentiment I noticed has surfaced here and there. I am going to try to watch Reese this weekend. I only watched one game and in that one Styles easily looked like the better player of the two.

When I talk draft here, I of course talk from our perspective. But I just like the draft from all perspectives. So I talk about guys that we may not get at time if they are polarizing or intriguing or there is something I see that I think others are missing…

DJ saying he dominated really made me kind of look deeper to see if my initial thoughts were way off. But I confirmed them.

I just love draft talk. And this thread is my favorite thread in the history of football message boards.

So this isn’t a from our point of view thing. I think Bailey is gone at 2. Which I get. I mean the Jets have nothing to lose - if he stinks they stink anyways. If he’s great it’s a win. And his upside is sky high. I also love his no frills style. Nothing against the swag kings out there, but this dude just puts on shoulder pads and a helmet and goes.

So I get it.

DJ’s wording made me deep dive this one.

Curious your take on Reese or if you haven't dived in, let me know when you do. I am about to do so.

I like Reese. He gets in great position as an edge in the run game and anchors well. He keeps force responsibility. He doesn’t do a ton after that in the run game as an edge, but he doesn’t his job. I’d like to see him add some strength to his anchor so he can displace blockers and disrupt the run game.

Adequate as a pass rusher. Not great. Needs to add some size again, and has to round out his arsenal. But has a lot of potential.

Can play some coverage. Can play on or off ball as a backer.

I like him. I think Styles is better off ball and in space and as a blitzer. Reese is better on the edge and still very good off.

I think those two are pretty close. Though I think I like Styles more. But they’re in the same ballpark.

I wonder what the odds are that Jermod McCoy kills the athletic testing at the combine, looks incredible in drills, and starts getting top 10 conversation.

He's the biggest potential mover. His 2024 tape plus athletic skills put him at the #2 pick. So if the knee looks like a nothingburger then he's going to shoot up the board.

So it sounds like you think while he should be in the mix if he falls to 7, he's not some no brainer pick.

My first choice is Caleb Down, the safest pick for a great player on defense. Next is Bain, I'm not going to lose my shit over 1" in arm length, he makes plays. Next is Bailey although his run defense is a huge concern, especially for this team. I don't think Reece is even worth mentioning because I believe he will be off the board.

Hey all, This thread has largely focused on the no. 7 pick with very little focus beyond that. I'm going to re-name this thread specifically to reflect what we should do at 7, then start some other threads to expand the conversation beyond the first round.
