The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Thought experiment…can Sonny play the AVG role? He did have 6 sacks in 2024 so wondering if his pass rush ability is as a pure blitzer or if he can attack occasionally as an EDGE. He becomes more exciting to me as a moveable chess piece given his technical competency and size

I don't think the dude who made that tweet was saying Tate = Jefferson. Jefferson aside from last season is arguably the best Wr in the NFL. The point is trashing a WR, especially one who plays with a stacked college corp, for being the #2 is irrelevant.

If it makes you feel better, lets say Terry. Terry was the #3 guy at Ohio State. People at ES literally said he sucked at the time before the draft.

Jalen reagor is the eagles Emanuel forbes.

From what I've heard, he could not do that.

I don't recall seeing his blitzing on tape, but I've heard it's basically just run really fast and hope the blockers don't account for you in time. AVG can actually rush the passer and keep hands off him.

Styles can play any LB position and is a very fluid athlete. He benefits from blitz timing and scheme to open his blitzes but he also can fight off blocks and keep his motor running on blitzes to make plays.

Hes probably not someone you want on the edge full time, but he can play any a LB positiob

Lets define the AVG role as a parttime off ball linebacker, parttime on ball linebacker. Obviously he could do the off ball linebacker part just fine as that is what he already does. Could he do the on ball stuff like set an edge against a Tackle and pass rush against a Tackle from the line of scrimmage. I think he could but probably not at the level he can do the off ball linebacker stuff. To me Arvell Reese is the prospect who really fits the AVG role. He is a very good off ball linebacker, probably not quite as good as Sonny Styles, but still very good off ball linebacker, and while he is rawer at on ball linebacker, he did do some of it at Ohio State and he definitely has the physicality to set a strong edge against an Offensive Tackle, his pass rush plan is lacking, but it already has a strong foundation in speed to power. Ohio St essentially already used him in something similar to the AVG role---he lined up in 5 technique, 7 technique, 9 technique on the Line as pass rushed and set edges against Tackles so we know he can do it. He also played off ball Linebacker at Ohio St. and did that well. With Styles maybe he could do the on the ball stuff, but he didn't do it at Ohio State and he not naturally as violent of a player as Reese. He is a better pure offball linebacker than Reese though. To me you are drafting Styles to replace Wagner.

I'm sure this was answered before but why did Reese semi disappear in his final few games? Was he being double-teamed, used differently or used a spy?

I watched Lee Hunter against BYU in the Big 12 Championship. It probably wasn’t the ideal evaluation game since BYU’s offensive line isn’t loaded with NFL talent, but it was still useful. I realized I had some incorrect impressions of Hunter going in. For whatever reason, I had pictured him as a big-bodied defensive tackle who flashed more as a pass rusher than you’d expect, but wasn’t a true force against the run. After watching this game, that’s not accurate. He is clearly a run-first player. He was also more versatile than I expected — I saw him line up at 0, 1, 3, 4i, and even 5 technique.

Run Defense: Hunter is a very good run defender. He has natural knee bend that allows him to consistently play with good leverage. His pad level was strong throughout the game. He faced roughly a dozen double teams and rarely got displaced. When facing down blocks and double teams, he does a nice job angling his body and dropping his inside knee to anchor. That technique is often referred to as a “knee drop” or “hip drop” anchor — essentially sinking your weight to absorb and split the double team. With that knee dropped and his leverage set, he can shed using upper-body strength alone. His upper body is powerful enough that once he’s anchored, he can separate late in the rep. He’s good at stacking and shedding. He also has an explosive first step, so when there’s an opportunity to penetrate, he can do that as well. He blew up several run plays in this game. Overall, his run defense was very impressive.

Pass Rush: There are flashes as a pass rusher, but not consistent production. One thing that stood out is that even in fairly obvious pass situations, there were reps where he seemed to be playing the run first. Instead of exploding off the snap, he’d engage and hand-fight more conservatively. On some second-and-long and even third downs, it felt like he defaulted to run-first mentality. That said, when he did turn it loose, there were promising reps. His go-to move appears to be the arm-over, particularly when aligned in 0 or 1 technique — basically “in a phone booth.” Combined with his explosive first step, it’s effective. I counted about four uses of it, and he won three of those reps. He also flashed some speed-to-power on maybe three snaps, and that was encouraging. On several reps where he didn’t explode initially, he still ended up forklift-style lifting the offensive lineman a second or two into the play. Nothing came of those reps because the push happened too late, but if he can trigger that power earlier and build a rush plan off it, there’s something to work with. From 5 technique, he got the tackle to overset and beat him inside with lateral quickness. Cory didn’t think he was particularly bendy, but for a 330-pounder, I thought his bend was actually pretty good. He’s clearly a very good run defender. As a pass rusher, you see flashes, but the consistency and pass-rush sequencing aren’t there yet.

Overall: To me, Lee Hunter looked like a first-round caliber player in this game. I would consider him in the late teens, though I doubt he ultimately goes that high. It would have been helpful to see him against stronger competition — BYU’s offensive line likely doesn’t have future NFL players — so there’s a chance this evaluation is slightly optimistic because of the matchup. Still, based on this tape, he looked like a dominant run defender with legitimate upside as a pass rusher if he becomes more aggressive and develops a more consistent plan.

Here is the first third to half or so of the video I wacthed...

I watched teh Indiana and Miami games but wasn't studying Reese and without studying him, I don't know. I heard he was used as a spy more in the second half of the season from podcasts so that may have played a role. It might also be the nature of his role to some extent too. As an on the ball linebacker you are more doing things like setting edges against Tackles and you setting things up for the offball linebackers to get the tackle rather than yourself and things like pass rush and sacks just has an inherent variability in it even for the good players--the snaps you win on the QB gets rid of the ball quickly--that sort of thing. And at least in the game I watched against Illinois, he played both on ball and off ball.

He had 6 sacks in 2024.

Some safety stats

Those numbers for Downs seem disappointing. I would’ve thought he would stand out well above the others based on the hype.

Styles and Reese don't have crazy numbers either. You betting on traits. Downs can do it all and his anticipation-read and react skills jump out in a big way. Just like on offense, when you got multiuple players making plays, it can dilute to numbers of the players.

Speaking of which, listening to Kiper now a couple of times (and I know he's plugged in, talks to teams) recently. Good news for the Tate haters here (not me among them). Looks like he's going before 7 probably to the Giants, but maybe the Titans.

At the moment I am getting the vibe that Downs will be there at 7.

But this combine next week and the aftermath is usually the better gauge as to guessing this stuff better.

I hope the Giants are enamored with their RBs and pass on Jeremiyah Love. He would be the worst case scenario there.

They are. They’re all in with Scattebo, Dart, and their matching sweaters. I think it’s Downs or Tate for them.

I'm betting Tate, if that's the case. They just gave Holland a huge deal (has an almost-$20m cap number this year).

Not that a rival getting Tate or Love is a good thing, it’s not - but I’d prefer they get Tate than Love.

My preference for the Giants is Tate, Downs, then Love. I could see them going Fano or Mauigoa too. I would prefer they reached on those two also.

I'd be really surprised if they went Love. They seem to worship Skateboo. Even in the Hard Knocks special, they were featuring him on the sidelines-locker room.

I am hoping they go Fano. And they might. Feels like their ammo is they will be the badass team in the NFC East. Harbaugh already saying playoffs next year, and SB soon. Skattebo, Dart said something similar. Thibodeaux echoing it the other day. If they can be graded on pure bravado talk, the Giants are already a dynasty to rival the last run from the Chiefs. But it feels they want to bully teams.

If they go Tate then IMO the whole division would have good 1A, !B Wrs except for Washington.

The more I think about it is my guess is they go Tate because they keep talking about how great Dart is so they'd want to make sure it actually works.

I sense some edginess from you about Peters with contract negotiations. I don't share it on that front. But my edginess with Peters is IMO no GM seemed to have less urgency than him as to making Jayden look good. Most other teams make it code red to do whatever they can to build the confidence of their young QBs. So with that in mind, I am buying Tate to NY.
