The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

I used to be this way.

Then I saw Christian Darrisaw fall past us and we took Jamin Davis which was arguably a bigger need.
There were a lot of things wrong with the Jamin Davis pick.

Picking for need is tricky, because need has to factor into grading. But you don't want to pick a lesser player at a position of need than a better player at a position of strength too often because you end up with worse players in need positions.

Which is not what you're looking for.

That said, you could argue the 'Skins picked the "right" player on DL 4 years in a row with Allen, Payne, Sweat and Young, and that caused a problem too.

So, there's a lot that goes into it.

And setting the market vs. allowing the market to dictate terms.

Tunsil retweeted that because that is where he is looking monetarily.

Back the truck up and get it done before the draft.

As an aside, to the people saying there aren't any tackles worth 7...

Don't forget, Conerly played LT in college and should have been drafted with the idea that he would eventually move to that side.

Mauigoa and Fano are very good prospects and as football players are better, in my opinion, than some of the other players we are discussing. Having said that, drafting OT at 7 IS a disaster in my eyes because it means we dropped the ball on Tunsil.

Mauigoa at RT and Conerly at LT isn't a bad grouping at all. But again, it's still a disaster.
I really think they're going to get the Tunsil deal done and I don't think it's going to be a big distraction. However, it might drag into the summer. We'll see. Tunsil doesn't attend voluntary stuff anyway.

By the way… I realize I’m beating a dead horse here but if we don’t get Tunsil taken care of #7 may need to be an OT.

Reason I bring it up is we are all kind of acting with the assumption we get Tunsil done and getting our hopes up for various prospects.

OT may be a necessity if we flub this. Just keep that in the back of the mind.

I think it gets done too, for what it’s worth. Just want to make sure everyone has some mental preparation if it doesn’t.

Even if they somehow flubbed the Tunsil extension, why couldn’t you just go Coleman/Conerly at tackle?

Dragging into summer is a real bad scenario for us because there is still a possibility it doesn't get done and we've passed our primary opportunities to fill the hole at LT/RT.

If they think Coleman can step in - okay. Let it ride. But I wouldn't put my hand to the fire. Get it done or trade him by the draft, imo. Getting it done is preferred. Trading is not. But having him hold out, sit, or get "injured" because he's unhappy is the worst scenario.

I think we get it done, too. We have to. As skinsinparadise said... flubbing this is Bruce Allen levels of bad. And I do agree with him that AP is all about self preservation.

I'm just fairly unconfident in this FO at this point. Getting Tunsil done or acting quickly to remedy it would really help ease my concerns.

The great thing about having an elite QB is that they can make average receivers good and good receivers great. I mean you saw Jayden lead Terry and that rag tag group of WRs to the NFC champ game. He helped get Dyami and Olamide paid that offseason. There’s just 0 reason to go WR at 7 especially in such a weak WR class. And this front office hasn’t really proven themselves yet as knowing what’s best for the franchise with how badly they botched last offseason. It’s just asinine that the WR at 7 is even a plausible scenario.

Having said that, if Love falls to 7 and they take him..honestly fine with it as he is the best overall talent in the draft. So if your argument is BPA at that point, no WR is the BPA at 7.

I really like CJ Daniels out of Miami in the later rounds. He was a baller at LSU but left that toxic locker room with Brian Kelly and couldn’t blame him. He could go anywhere between the 3rd and 5th from what I’ve seen.

I love Jayden. And I admit part of it is ego arguing with football friends of other teams but i don't think Jayden is considered the better of the 2024 class anymore with the national media or average fans. For this moment in time. And I put that blame on putting so much on Jayden's shoulders. Granted it doesn't matter. But at a minimum the idea that lets just put it on Jayden's shoulders and watch him shine and he doesn't need weapons like other QBs -- is a question.

Now, it is an open debate and it will change over time. But lol it bothers me that Jayden is now considered a question mark within some of the national media and casual fans.

And part of that narrative is IMO there are limits to how many scrubs you can give Jayden at WR. He got by in 2024 with a healthy Terry at the top of his game. Ekeler mostly healthy as a pass catching RB. Ditto Ertz. And Noah at least played in some games, Dyami, Zaccheus. It was a decent combination.

And you combine that with the easiest schedule in the NFL they made magic albiet a lot of close calls against medicore teams.

So now we got an aging and possibly injury prone Terry. No Ertz. No Ekeler. They need to rebuild their weapons.

We can laugh off Caleb getting every toy he wants under the Christmas tree -- give him three #1 type WRs talent wise, two good young TE's, better depth -- and we still got our Jayden so who cares. But there are some now who think Caleb > Jayden. And IMO that's mostly because of how loaded that Bears offense is so Caleb in turn has it much easier.

When Kurt Warner did his expose about how Jayden regressed this season by making the point that he's holding the ball too long and developing bad habits. Sheehan-Keim basically heard back from the team about yeah but......receivers aren't open and or running the wrong routes so he has his reasons for regression.

I am just not interested in going into a deeper dive to see if Jayden can make lemonade out of lemons. Let's give him a chance like the other young QBs have.

An older 31 year old Terry. Without Ertz. Probably without Deebo. Adds up to a weaker supporting class than the pathetic 2025 version. It's almost as code red to address this as is edge.

Even if they somehow flubbed the Tunsil extension, why couldn’t you just go Coleman/Conerly at tackle?
They probably would start that way, but man, that would be an absolute epic catastrophe for Peters. Trading all those picks over 2 years for 1 year where you go 5-12 (not that Tunsil was anywhere the reason for that) would be almost an unrecoverable sin.

The thing is, Tunsil knows that. So he's going to try and leverage Peters. Peters probably knows that also.

Which is why I think this will get done without drama, I just don't know when.

I thought Peters should have given Tunsil a new deal last year when they traded for him so this wasn't going to be a thing. However, we're about to get WAY off topic for this thread.

Regardless, from a draft perspective, I doubt they prioritize OT. They will pay Tunsil, and they have Coleman and Connerly.

I personally want them to trade Coleman for a mid-round pick and draft somebody, but it feels like I'm on an island with that desire.

Yes i understand 'need' factoring into grading, but it can't change the dynamic of the tier. \

I wont argue about Allen, Sweat, and Young. Payne was NOT the 'right' player as Derwin James was on the board and the slam dunk choice that season, especially a year after we had taken Allen.

These same conversations come back to getting the premium talent over need, if that talent is on the board.

And somebody (I don't remember who, though I think it was Bullock) said that what made Daniels special in 2024 was his ability to throw in rhythm. And he had absolutely no reps with the real offense basically the entire year to home the rhythm. And because of that, he didn't have the trust, held the ball, waited to see things open rather than anticipating things like he did in 2024.

I completely buy this. And it's due to Daniels' injuries + Terry's holdout + WR + RB + TE injuries.

He never looked comfortable.

We'll see what happens next year. I don't honestly care what the media says about what. Maye had a "meh" offseason, but they made the playoffs and then got crunched like a chocolate bar. Does that make him the best of the 3? Daniels had a great 2024 post season and was like the only thing which worked in the NFC Championship game, and while the team got crunched like a chocolate bar, Daniels didn't and was as good as he could be given the circumstances.

The media, specifically Bram Weinstein, would absolutely lose their minds if we selected anybody but a defensive player with the 7th pick.

I'm not necessarily opposed, but damn, the media would go absolutely mad. They're all expecting a defensive pick.

Now, depending on what we do in FA, that might change. But as of now, all the talking heads who cover the team seems to think "best defensive player available" is who we should take ay 7.

They would. I don't mind it, though. I am lol as usual just waiting for Keim. He nailed Jayden. And he actually he was beating the drum that they really really were looking at O line in the 2025 draft, but he did think edge possible, too. I'd want to hear him leak at some point that he feels that Love is at least on the table. Too early to know now, but in April maybe.

While I am a big Love guy. I talked about him months ago. I am not in the camp that its the be all and end all to take him.

I could absolutely take Downs or Bailey or Reese over him or on offense Tate. Context to me is king. And I don't think Tate is a reach like some here do at 7.

I think if I recall it was method man or maybe I am misremebering who said it months back when I was touting Love -- they go why not Hall and then take another great player top 10? They had a point. If I am looking at this like Peters, Love isn't close to being a slam dunk decision considering the combination of other players who could be at that spot and how loaded FA is at RB.

I used to be this way.

The easier part of this draft, pre FA, is almost every spot is a need. So in theory at least you can fill a premium spot and a need at the same time.

I've put a library worth of propaganda for Downs and Love on this thread. So I am not adverse to going for a non premium position.

But I do think there are some dudes at premium spots who aren't a mile away IMO from Love and Downs hence I think the decision making is very tricky.

As to trading down if they could, I am starting to dive into that thought more. At the moment I have some interest in:

Boston, Lemon, Styles (yeah I think he can drop), Woods, Delane (if he drops)

You either ARE Keim, his agent or child.

:p

I think they'd have to head over heals in love with Love to take him.

They got FA which might not be hot at Wr so it might be a rare chance to get a number 1 type to help poor Jayden. I doubt its lost on Peters that the Bears for two drafts in row loaded Caleb with weapons.

It's gone a little below the radar but both Jayden's mom and pal, Nabers have made fun of the lack of weapons Jayden has with likes on social media. I don't think Peters is going to want to be a punchline for doing the least of any GM for his young QB as to weapons -- also Peters mentioned giving Jayden weapons in his press conference.

Then you got arguably the least talented defense in the NFL.

Worst receivers IMO. Worst edge.

And their answer is to address neither spot with their top 10 pick and take a RB when FA is loaded at RB.

Is it possible? Sure. I'd love it no pun intended. But its not hard at all to go devil's advocate on this discussion.

To me FA is everything, it likely gives us major hints to the draft. I don't always feel that way but this time I do.

Fair point. I tend to word it a little different that there are obvious position groups that can be greatly improved by a single premium move, but none of them are baron to the point you would look at going into 2026 and they're a complete liability. It's the tomato, tomahto conversation, i get it.

The more I think about it, the pickings at DE, RB, CB, and WR in FA can tip the balance. We don't know of course yet who gets resigned pre FA. They can chase players and lose ala last year with Bosa, D. Lawrence, etc.

RB is really loaded in FA. Hall, Etienne, Dowdle, maybe Walker, Allgeier. Even that next tier not bad, Gainwell, R. White. I think for example signing Etienne or Hall are game changers at that spot.

The options at WR aren't that hot. I am guessing Pierce doesn't make it to FA. So we got Doubs, Jennings, Shaheed. Some slot guys. And the competition for WR Fa's can be fierce. But lets say they sign for exmaple Jennings and lose out on the RBs, then I can see Love more easily at that pick.

But I suspect they can land one of those top RBs. Would I rather have Etienne at 8 million or Jennings at 22 million? I think Etienne at 8.

The PFF NFL stock exchange guys did their most recent mock, with trades, and had us trade down to 21 with Pittsburgh, in exchange for their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

I think it would be hard for me to make that trade unless we loaded some really premium free agents. We need impact players. I’d be inclined to stick and pick.

Also, as much as Kdawg has been selling me on Bain, those same PFF guys LOVE him. They think he is a clear both above Bailey, dismiss the concerns about arm length, and see him as a complete edge and an impact player.

Yeah I watch Sikemma religiously, saw that show. Yeah I know he doesn't care about his arm length. It doesn't influence me though to sell me. But whether its KDawg or Sikemma or anyone I respect as to their takes it does reassure me some. But not enough to sell me. But enough for me not to panic if they take him.

I just don't know about Bain. He has ana amazing motor, great bend for his size. But I can't just dismiss the arm length considering him being a power rusher. If he was a speed rusher, I can maybe overlook it. But again I could be dead wrong. I just don't know.

In a trade back. One dude that I talked about months back and have laid off recently then I am getting back into is Denzel Boston -- great hands, catch radius, physicality including as a run blocker.

I want to see Bain at the combine. His measurements and athletic testing. His arms don’t look that terribly short to me. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were 32 inches

I hear you about physical outliers being a risk.

Bain just plays like an animal. He feels like a heavier, bendier, Jared Verse, with shorter arms.

Edit: I was just looking at other players with short arms. Melvin Ingram had 31.5 arms. I don’t think Bain’s arm length is going to be unprecedented.

Also, I’d be super happy with Bailey as well. By the end of this process, I’m not sure who I will favor.

My quick ideal offseason would be trade for Aiyuk, sign Nashon Wright at CB, Likely at TE, take a shot at Nakobe Dean before the draft. Wouldn’t mind taking a shot on Pitts either but he’s legit boom or bust. Feel like Likely is more of a sure thing and could absolutely be a top 6-8 TE with Jayden. And then we are looking really nice heading into the draft with the secondary being a potential real strength going into next season.

No one is going to have to trade for Aiyuk. Hes gonna be released

I watched Skyler Bell against Duke. Bell is the 5'11", 186-pound WR out of UConn. He split time roughly evenly between slot and Z. It was a particularly good matchup because Chandler Rivers, a borderline top-100 prospect himself, followed him and played mostly tight man coverage. So you had two borderline top-100 prospects going head-to-head in tight man for most of the game.

Bell generally had a good release, and it mattered because Rivers was aligned tight — usually three yards or less from the line of scrimmage. On most reps, Bell did a good job of getting into Rivers’ personal space before initiating his release. He consistently closed to within about a yard, which forces the corner to declare inside or outside leverage and shoot his hands. That forward lean shifts the DB’s center of gravity and makes it harder to react cleanly. Overall, his releases were solid, though not perfect. There were a few reps where Rivers was able to disrupt him.

His route running was good, though the route tree was somewhat limited. He ran a lot of crossers, overs, shallow crossers, and choice routes, so there weren’t many true hard in-breakers or out-breakers on tape to fully evaluate his ability to snap off routes at the top. That said, when he beat Rivers off the line, he did an excellent job stacking him. Rivers often tried to play trail technique, but Bell defeated that by stacking vertically once he gained a step. Once stacked, Rivers lost his leverage advantage and had to defend both inside and outside breaks from behind, which is a difficult position in trail. The moment Bell got even, he worked to get on top of him. There were flashes of hip sink on in-breakers, but the limited variety of routes makes it hard to fully evaluate that aspect. On choice routes, he was very good. He almost always made the correct decision based on leverage. UConn saw a lot of man in this game, but given how well he understands leverage and space, I suspect he would transition well attacking zone coverage too, even though there wasn’t a ton of that on tape here.

Bell is on the smaller side, and Rivers was able to reroute him at times. On the game-winning touchdown, Rivers was in press and physically pushed him toward the boundary. Rivers largely won that rep structurally — Bell was not open. But the quarterback threw a perfect back-shoulder ball, and Bell showed late hands and excellent tracking to finish the touchdown. That was more ball skills than separation. The quarterback was somewhat inaccurate overall, and Bell adjusted well to several throws that were low or slightly behind him. There weren’t many true contested-catch opportunities (the game winning TD was maybe the only contested catch opportunity), but he did secure at least three balls that required significant adjustment.

After the catch, he showed decent acceleration and deceleration, but not at the level of someone like Zachariah Branch. He doesn’t have Branch’s lateral twitch or juke ability, and like Branch, he isn’t breaking tackles through contact. Nothing special after the catch, but solid. His start-stop ability created a little extra yardage at least once.

Overall, I like him. He feels like a Jaylin Lane caliber receiver and could carve out an Olamide Zaccheaus type role. I doubt he’s ever a true star, but he looks like a functional, reliable NFL receiver. Compared to Branch, who is generally viewed slightly higher, I think Bell has the higher floor because of his release package and leverage awareness, while Branch has the higher ceiling due to superior explosiveness in space. If I had to choose, I would probably take Bell over Branch, though I understand why many would chase the ceiling. Bell would be an acceptable pick at 71, though perhaps not outstanding value.

Here is roughly the first half of the video I watched....
