The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

You guys got me convinced. Tunsil extension needs to be done immediately regardless of cost. Code red!

But even if we can’t, I still say no to drafting a LT. That’ll just piss him off

Digesting the list of tiers from KDawg and SIP….

You guys couldn’t be further apart on Baily and Bain. Makes me nervous about both.

At WR, I have to agree free agency doesn’t look good at all and we simply MUST get some weapons for Jayden. Pierce is not the answer at what he will cost. So I too think Aiyuk is a good gamble. And if we get a good tight end and a stud RB, I think we can get by with Aiyuk or maybe a mid-tier guy or two. Then, starting next year we could really lean in to WR in the draft going forward as Jayden becomes expensive.

The love for Love is unmistakable. Most think taking a RB this early is taboo, but if you want to add star power to this team, he seems about as close to a sure thing as you can get. And when you add his receiving skills, that’s definitely a nice toy for Jayden that to me would help as much as any of the receivers we are talking about.

Downs similarly seems like a no doubt about it prospect. Downs and Love remain my top two. I get the argument about positional value matching our need (WR, Edge) but I want to prioritize star power, and getting the best possible talent with this pick. It is absolutely essential that we hit on this pick. So I’d rather worry about positional value and future salary cap savings…in the future.

So for example I do like J. Love over Tate. But not by a mile. I'd say Love is a peg better than Tate. But Tate's positional value balances that out at least some but the kicker is you can perhaps sign a Hall or Etienne at RB -- you got attractive options where you can have you cake and eat it too.

I don't know of course for sure but its hard for me to believe that this team won't factor everything in the soup when making decisions -- FA, what helps them win now, what impacts the cap versus looking at it in vacuum.

He’s under contract THIS season. 27 is a void year.

He can also show up and get “injured”. We aren’t in position to rely on a disgruntled player.

Not with Jayden.

Not now.

We have to get something done with him.

A. With the combination of there not being an obvious LT prospect at 7 AND...

B. The same GM doubled down on the Lattimore trade by bring him back even though he sucked in 2024 -- in short Peters doesn't want to look bad when he makes a trade by giving up picks and then renting the player

C. The same GM openly talked about Tunsil being one of the best LTs in the league

D. Tunsil is under contract. Very few hold out or pretend they are injured, etc. It happens once in a blue moon

E. Keim who seems to nail just about everything in the off season but in real time when he says things, some seem to doubt it when he says it in real time, but Keim's on a roll with this stuff. I don't usually lose by betting with Keim.

F. This thought of watch out for LT as a sneaky need because who knows what happens with Tunsil, isn't echoed by anyone covering this team.

Look you never know. Heck they can take Ty Simpson for all I know top 10 and shock the world. But at least at this moment if this is something brewing with this team, they are doing an amazing job keep it under the radar. And if it happens, Peters should be fired. It's basically IMO doing a mea culpa on the season.

To me it would be waiving a white flag on the season. And Peters should just pack his bags after doing it.

To have a draft where you are missing a 2nd and 4th rounder because of the Tunsil trade and then in turn let him loose and use your first round pick on a LT -- which basically would add up to using in this draft a top 10 pick, a 2nd and 4th rounder on a LT would end up rivaling any boneheaded Ron Rivera, Bruce Allen, Cerrato move.

It would not only be epically bad but Peters would be the laughingstock of the league.

And basically it would be giving up on supposedly a must win 2026 season -- considering that top 10 pick is arguably a key component to this team's climb back to contention, and there is no obvious stud LT top ten pick, a young LT often doesn't hit the ground running let alone a project one. It to me would be punting the season away.

You have more faith in this regime than I do. And I’m not all out on them. But I’m close. Getting Tunsil done gives me a bit of breathing room for them.

Its not really about faith in them.

Like or not like Peters, he's shown he has a self preservation instinct for better or worse as to how he handled both the Lattimore trade and the Lattimore return in 2025.

So he'd have to be going against type to do the opposite with Tunsil -- let alone it would in effect likely implode the season and maybe cost Peters his job.

I am betting on Peters' self preservation instinct and Keim here. My concern about them taking a LT in the top 10 is at a zero.

The great thing about having an elite QB is that they can make average receivers good and good receivers great. I mean you saw Jayden lead Terry and that rag tag group of WRs to the NFC champ game. He helped get Dyami and Olamide paid that offseason. There’s just 0 reason to go WR at 7 especially in such a weak WR class. And this front office hasn’t really proven themselves yet as knowing what’s best for the franchise with how badly they botched last offseason. It’s just asinine that the WR at 7 is even a plausible scenario.

Having said that, if Love falls to 7 and they take him..honestly fine with it as he is the best overall talent in the draft. So if your argument is BPA at that point, no WR is the BPA at 7.

I really like CJ Daniels out of Miami in the later rounds. He was a baller at LSU but left that toxic locker room with Brian Kelly and couldn’t blame him. He could go anywhere between the 3rd and 5th from what I’ve seen.

I'm in the "I'll see what happens" stage with all of this. I don't care about reports or any of that as far as personnel goes. When I see it with my own eyes, I'll believe it. They lost that faith from me with last offseason. Can they gain it back? Yes, I think so. Do I think they are reasonably smart people? Yes. Do I think they have dropped a sledge hammer on their own toes? Yes. More than once.

Zachariah Branch – Two Game Evaluation (Ole Miss Playoff & Florida)

I watched Branch against Ole Miss in the playoff and Florida and came away thinking he is an excellent gadget weapon with real open-field juice, but a limited route runner right now. If you design touches for him, he can change a game. If you ask him to consistently win in tight man coverage on traditional routes, it’s more uneven.

As a gadget player, he’s very good. His elusiveness after the catch is elite. In open space, he’s going to make the first defender miss most of the time. He’s extremely hard to square up. The acceleration and deceleration are what stand out — he can gear down and re-accelerate instantly. His lateral quickness and jukes are dangerous in the short game. His top speed looks solid, probably low 4.4s, but it’s really the change of pace and agility that separate him. The downside is contact balance. He does not run through tackles. He’s not a Deebo-type who breaks arm tackles and drags defenders. He has to win with make-you-miss ability.

As a receiver, he’s more of a body catcher, which isn’t necessarily a problem because he only had two drops. I’d prefer more consistent hands-catching, but the production in terms of drops isn’t alarming. One issue is that he jumps to catch a lot of intermediate throws, which takes him off his feet and limits his ability to transition immediately into YAC. His ball tracking is good. On slot fades and vertical routes he tracks well and flashes late hands. He had two impressive downfield catches in the games I watched. Against Ole Miss, he scored on a slot fade where he used subtle late hands and a slight push-off to finish a tough catch. Against Florida, he had another strong catch through contact. The ball skills are better than the route polish.

The route running, though, is below average right now. He rounds off breaks, shows false steps both off the line and at the top of routes, and doesn’t consistently use head fakes, rocker steps, or leverage manipulation to move defensive backs. At times he sinks his hips well and can create separation on in- and out-breakers, but it’s inconsistent. He’s small at 5'11” and 180 pounds, and downfield contact can reroute him. There were a couple reps where he used subtle contact at the top of the route to create space, including that Ole Miss touchdown, but overall he is not consistently separating through nuance. He also has a tendency to look where he’s breaking, which will be more dangerous in the NFL when safeties trigger faster.

The usage tells part of the story. Fifty-one of his 92 targets were behind the line of scrimmage, and 71 were within 10 yards. That aligns with the tape. He’s most dangerous in manufactured touches and quick-game situations where he can operate in space. If a defense plays tight coverage and forces him to win as a traditional route runner, it may not look as dynamic. He can create separation at times by dropping his hips sharply, but he’s not winning with advanced nuance.

Overall, I like him as a weapon, and I’d be fine taking him at 71. I just wouldn’t call it great value. Ideally, you’re getting a receiver at that spot who can win with more complete route running while still offering upside. Branch gives you immediate gadget value and open-field explosiveness, but the refinement as a full-route-tree receiver still needs work.

Here is the first third or so of the video I watched...

My quick ideal offseason would be trade for Aiyuk, sign Nashon Wright at CB, Likely at TE, take a shot at Nakobe Dean before the draft. Wouldn’t mind taking a shot on Pitts either but he’s legit boom or bust. Feel like Likely is more of a sure thing and could absolutely be a top 6-8 TE with Jayden. And then we are looking really nice heading into the draft with the secondary being a potential real strength going into next season.

If Reese fell to us, would he be a run to the podium kind of pick?
Love is the run to the podium guy for me. Reese isn’t too far off of that, though. If Reese gets a little more anchor and a few counter moves in the run game he’s going to be really good.

I'm kind of surprised (and very happy) to see the number of people open to drafting Love at 7.

The media, specifically Bram Weinstein, would absolutely lose their minds if we selected anybody but a defensive player with the 7th pick.

I'm not necessarily opposed, but damn, the media would go absolutely mad. They're all expecting a defensive pick.

Now, depending on what we do in FA, that might change. But as of now, all the talking heads who cover the team seems to think "best defensive player available" is who we should take ay 7.

If we are drafting players to please the media, we are in a real bad place.

I don't care what the media has to say. If they can't see how much Love helps our FRANCHISE QB, maybe they should rethink their profession.

If I were the media, I'd be more frustrated with how fast we threw picks away the last few years - not selecting the guy who may be the best player in the entire class.

I used to be this way.

Then I saw Christian Darrisaw fall past us and we took Jamin Davis which was arguably a bigger need.

I'm not suggesting we should or they will care, I'm just predicting the reaction.

They won't because they are typically no-nothing arrogogant dumbasses. Bram isn't one of those, but he's entirely stuck on it being a defensive pick. To the extent, I'm wondering if he's been told something and he's been socializing it. I don't think that's the case, but who knows.

However, he's all in on defense. Thinks they can fix the offense with FA.

The Lattimore trade was a debacle. Tunsil I still am happy with.

Who's the guy they didn't select who might be the best player in the class?

Another example of a top GM and organization get out ahead of contracts before they become a distraction!
And setting the market vs. allowing the market to dictate terms.

Tunsil retweeted that because that is where he is looking monetarily.

Back the truck up and get it done before the draft.

As an aside, to the people saying there aren't any tackles worth 7...

Don't forget, Conerly played LT in college and should have been drafted with the idea that he would eventually move to that side.

Mauigoa and Fano are very good prospects and as football players are better, in my opinion, than some of the other players we are discussing. Having said that, drafting OT at 7 IS a disaster in my eyes because it means we dropped the ball on Tunsil.

Mauigoa at RT and Conerly at LT isn't a bad grouping at all. But again, it's still a disaster.
