It's the end of an era.

My mini stereo which lasted 30 years has been put to rest. Over the last few months, I struggled in denial as three-quarters of the time I hit play to listen to a CD it instead toggled to a static filled AM setting. I still enjoy listening to albums or CDs especially when writing. It is useful thematically to have a soundtrack that you play while writing a story. It sets up a habit and helps put you back in the mindset of that story.

Anyway, it's not really worth memorializing, but it is strange the things you get attached to or that you don't want to let go of.

Old phone just died, couldn't even get it to turn on. I didn't want to pay for a new phone if I didn't have to (I liked my phone, it did everything I needed it to, which isn't much cuz I'm old). Everything was lost, contacts, messages, photos, everything. I was freaking out, bordering on crying.
I should've done this weeks ago when I thought it was on its' last leg, but again, I put the "pro" in procrastinate.

This 20-something named Beto took almost an hour and a half with me. Sweetest kid. Upgraded my phone for only an extra $2/month with 2 free tracker thingys. Took another 20 minutes moving some stuff around with my card and the display model to get all my photos back. Taught me how to get my contacts back. This kid had the patience of Job. (Our birthdays are only 2 days apart).
There were about 5 people in the store bitchin' about how horrible their store service is. I found it to be exceptional, I tipped Beto $10, and made sure everybody saw it.

I hate this stuff too. I've needed a new phone for a while, though I don't think it will die, but I don't want to have to go through this again. The last time, because the guy was alone in the store and he had to help other customers, it took 3 hours. But this is why I will always be with AT&T, Verizon etc over the online carriers is because they have stores and for $35 a month I have a phone IT guy on retainer.

We all know this feeling brother. I had a Grateful Dead tee shirt that I had for decades, it was heavy weight and I wore in on about 40 camping trips. When it finally died I was sad, used it to wax my truck.

Mine did. I tried for 30 years to be a guitar player. I got to where I could bang out an REM tune among friends on a camping trip but I just wasn't very good at it, lost interest and now it sits.

Tyson vs. Ali in their prime?

Sorry - but Tyson is going to knock Ali out. Ali struggled most with power punchers who were quick, guys like Frazier and Earnie Shavers (Shavers beat Ali within an inch of his life and almost beat him). He had such good defensive skills, Ali could evade guys like George Foreman. But he wouldn't be able to survive by 'rope-a-doping' Mike Tyson in his prime.

There has never been a heavyweight boxer with the combination of power, speed, and raw aggression the early Mike Tyson had.
 
Well, Ali did make a career out of taking on massive challenges (even at an advanced age) and doing things the experts didn't think he could do. And he could take a punch. But Tyson in his prime was not human.
 
It would be the fight of our lifetime.

Here is one possibility.

  1. Muhammad Ali was just too fast – Muhammad Ali fans have a love affair with his speed. Ali was very fast. The legend of his speed was magnified by the fact that most heavyweights of Tyson’s time were slow as molasses. He relied on his quickness and agility to avoid punches. Which means his defense was the boxing equivalent of Russian roulette. It was this game that led his face to be the pounding pad for thousands of well-placed punches. For all of his quickness and speed, Joe Frazier beat Ali within an inch of his life in their first encounter.
  2. Mike Tyson would quickly knock Ali out – Mike Tyson fans have a love affair with Tyson’s power and intimidating persona. Mike Tyson made grown men quiver and scream. Mike Tyson’s intimidating ring entrance and ice-cold stare broke many opponents down. None of those men were Muhammad Ali. Ali withstood the thunderous hooks and uppercuts of George Foreman, Archie Moore, Joe Frazier, and Ken Norton without being knocked out. Sonny Liston was arguably a more intimidating boxer than Mike Tyson because of his mafia connections. Muhammad Ali made a mockery of him and embarrassed him twice.
If you’re going to have a discussion, especially a fantasy discussion, in which you compare boxers then you need to look at no less than 9 things.

They are:
  1. Style – How does he box?
  2. Punching Power – Is he swatting flies or cracking jaws?
  3. Speed – Can you see his punches coming or do they sneak up on you?
  4. Chin - Can the boxer take a pounding and stand his ground?
  5. Defense – Is he a human punching bag or is he hard to hit?
  6. Heart – Does he have the desire to peel his sweaty carcass off the canvas and return to battle?
  7. Psychology – Can he get inside his opponent's head and nullify his training?
  8. Key Losses – Who did the boxer lose to and why?
  9. Stamina/Endurance – Is he grabbing his knees in the eighth round?

I loved Ali from an early age. Kids back then picked either Ali or Frazier. For once I was on the right side. And I never liked Mike Tyson, thought he was a thug. But I believe Mike Tyson knocks Muhammad Ali out, he was an incredibly powerful force in his prime.
 
I'm a huge Ali fan but Tyson was a crazy force.
 
The ground has finally thawed enough for me to take Nikki for a walk. My lawn has gone unchanged for 3 weeks and just too dangerous to use. It was work and we didn't go far but it sure was good to get outside and moving again.
 
This was the worst snow since 66. It wasn't the most snow we've had, but the fact we had 12 hours of freezing rain on top of it made it the worst.

My dog didn't help one bit either. I kept telling her to pee on the snow but nooooo, she needed her grass to pee.

Also, I still think that Ali would beat Tyson. I could see Mike knocking Ali down in the first or second round but Ali was tough enough to get back up. Mike would wear down after the 3rd and Ali would be all over Tyson after that. Shame we'll never know.

Up in Winchester, we got 38 inches on my 17th birthday, which is today. It was a nightmare up in the hills, no one went anywhere for weeks.

Happy Birthday Mary.

Are you from Winchester? Years ago we did research on possible retirement destinations. Started in Harpers Ferry, WV we followed 81 as if we were moving south we wanted to be in the mountains. I looked at every viable town from WV to Tennessee. I liked Winchester, it was close enough to still get the Washington teams on TV.

We settled on Maryville, TN just south of Knoxville. Then I broke out the calculator again and figured we can just stay in Mount Airy and I"m so glad we did. I'm sitting in my recliner looking at the bird feeder with a hawk on a branch in the background. This is the place for me.

There was a storm in Northern Virginia around the 1976 or 1977 timeframe where we had drifts up to like 10'. Crazy.

much later but January 1994 was epic. We were out of HS for weeks. I shoveled our driveway to a point where the snow piled on the sides was well over my head. If I recall there were 2 storms, maybe a week apart?

My best friend in HS walked from McLean to Vienna to his girlfriend’s house. Took like 4 hours. The problem was he got they so late, her parents couldn’t send him home. So he spent the night in the basement and I think the dad sat on the steps with a shotgun. Chuckle.
