This is what baffled me time and again. Why did he continue to do it..... I just thought there must have been some OC mystic reason why he did it while the rest of us scratched our heads. It was so difficult to wrap my head around it. Like he was attempting to play 3D chess but didn't realize he was wearing a blindfold.
 
Lets keep this thread back toward the discussion specifically to Daronte Jones and the defense.


The original point regarding Kliff, was not determining what Kliff did or didn't do, it was determining if what Kliff did or didnt do effected how the defense was practing
 
I wonder if a guy like Jones will value a player like Newton more? After all, if Flores system incorporates player flexibility than a DT who is more quick and agile might be more useful than a one who is a mountain. A guy like Newton is probably better suited for attacking and penetrating than absorbing blockers to let the linebackers make a play. Honestly, I'm not sure if that's what Whitt was trying to do or not, but I want to see a guy who flashed a few times to learn to be a consistent light.

Was it the player or the coach? Is it the player or the scheme?

On this same wavelength, which Mike Sainristil will we see? The rookie who looked on his way to stardom or the sophomore who looked like a confused bum at nickel?

We were in no-huddle 64% of the time, which was like triple of everybody else.

We were 16th (dead middle) in terms of time between snaps.

I know what he was trying to do. Also, I think he felt compelled to substitute more because we didn't have players with (wait for it, wait for it ...) POSITION FLEX! where he could just keep the same personnel and move them around formations. I actually think the Deebo signing was supposed to help that, because Deebo can be a WR, RB, and even a really good blocker to move around. But then we lost Terry and Noah Brown, and all of a sudden Deebo was the outside receiver.

Anyway, I liked Kliff's offense. Not as much as the Colts offense. But since McVay left, our offenses have been slow and ploddy. He brought tempo and explosiveness. And I liked that a lot.

Ok, that's a digression which we should take to another thread if we want to continue it. We got onto this tangent because Quinn and Whitt blamed Kliff for not giving them the same look they were getting from other teams and the defense was therefor ill-prepared. To which I say Bull Pucky and Shut Up. And that's my final answer.
 
For whatever reason I was thinking he was the DC for LSU in 2020 rather than 2021. After looking at the 2020 stats, I am very glad it was 2021 rather than 2020 as LSU's defense was terrible in 2020 (99th out of 128 in points allowed and 125thout of 128 teams in yards allowed). In 2021 they were slightly above average finishing in the top half for both those stats so they made significant progress.

He made it work with the lack of defensive talent at LSU his one season there as DC. Coach O finally let him do his thing starting at the Bama game. Think we were a 4 touchdown dog against Bama and punched them in the mouth and made them look pretty pedestrian. If Coach Kelly wasn’t such an idiot and didn’t get rid of him, Raymond, and Baker..Jayden probably wins the natty in 23. Kelly ended up bringing back Baker and Raymond after he realized he had hired failures in Matt House and co. NFL DC is a major jump for him but I’m excited to see what he does. Our players are going to be bullies if anything.

Yep just double checked , we were a 28.5 dog on the road in Tuscaloosa and held Heisman Winner Bryce Young and Bama to 20 points and sacked him 5 times. Bryce looked shook all game and had no idea where the blitzes were coming from. Could’ve easily won that game but the offense was so abysmal.

Jones is a defensive backs specialist by background and there is no unit on the team where we have spent as many picks to get mostly subpar production.

Will be interesting to see who emerges with the changes and who Jones may have 411 on for bringing in free agents.

Okay so first off... why? That's what the scout team is for. And second off... why?

High school teams go against scout teams. There is no shot Washington doesn't.

It's not only lame - it's entirely made up.
 
Where did that excuse originate? Was it something Whitt said to try and justify why his defense was so bad, or worse, was it something DQ said for the same reason?
 
Yea if it came out of Whitts mouth then I don't give two nickels (since cents were canceled). But if it came out of DQs mouth then I think the team has big problems.

Honestly, I'm not heart broken about this development at all. Our secondary was atrocious all year long. I get the nonexistent pass rush contributed to it to a degree, but at the same time I saw multiple instances where the backend was confused, lost assignments, had opposing receivers running open, etc that gave me nauseating flashbacks of the Rivera defenses.

Now, was there a disconnect between Whitt and the secondary coaches? Perhaps. At this point, hard to say with any certainty but I'd be inclined to believe it factored into the overall problems the defense had. I would assume this particularly given how the defense played marginally better when DQ assumed control once Whitt was given a well earned time out.

Honestly, I don't see any of the secondary coaches remaining once Jones starts assembling his staff. I really think outside of possibly Norton, Kerrigan, and perhaps Tapp (and im really just spit balling here) that most of this defensive staff will be shown the door.

Im really curious though to see who Jones targets to round out his staff. Would expect a possible Vikings coach (as i believe there was some speculation of such a move) or two to come along. Mostly, I'm curious to see how he plans to repair that unit as well as the D as a whole.

He has his work cut out for him.

Doubt it’s realistic, but if our new DC can get connected with this guy through Flores, that would be an excellent hire.

Steelers fans and analysts I follow have wanted major shakeups to that staff for YEARS. Yet this is a guy they really wanted to keep around under McCarthy, and he’s now free and clear to work for anyone
 
Need a DC that can really help the defense reach on such a new level. As need to remember defense wins championships.
