Official Game Thread - Week 17 - Christmas Edition - Cowboys @ Commanders

I think you have to look at the stats over 17 games and not get too caught up on one game UNLESS you have a player you are evaluating who is getting a first chance to play extended minutes, etc.

If you look at the defensive rankings you can plainly see this team doesn't have the talent to compete at a playoff level in the NFL in 2025.

The coaching to me is another related issue, but I can't reconcile myself with the thought that if we had a great DC instead of Whitt that the 2025 Commanders defense would have produced solid results.

I just don't see the depth of talent.

If you’re replying to me… I don't disagree.

I’m just saying yesterday was a strange performance on defense. Dallas had a mostly healthy offense though they lost Williams and Ferguson. It was strange to watch them play so well at times.

Dallas was in 3rd and long a lot. They converted them though.

When Dallas was 3rd and short… they stopped them. Dallas just kept going for it and 4th downs and converted… or had the refs help.

That defense was jekyll and hyde yesterday. I don’t remember another performance like that. Total feast or famine.

They were either stuffing the run (<2 yards) half the time…. Or getting gashed for 9 yards.

But their backup ran for 100+.

They were playing some of the best pass defense I’ve ever seen (passes defensed cleanly)…. or letting guys wide open in zone for at least 20-yards. And 1 80-yard bomb.

They had 6 sacks!! Prescott threw for a 50% completion rate.

The defense only gave up 6 points in the 2nd half.

But they gave up 500 yards total offense.

Just dont know what to think.

See the screen shots above...

3rd and 11, Cowboys have the ball at their own 14, and we come out in some sort of alignment that has NO DT on the field... anywhere. The play results in an 86 yard TD pass with a pocket for days. If there is any glaring example of schematic issues effecting talent on the field... that's it.

Watching the replay on NFLN now, not that I wanted to, but because of what y'all said about the uniforms...

They're so beautiful, I wanna cry. That's what we're supposed to look like, dammit!!!
💯

We can argue logo all day, but from the neck down everything was right in the world for 4 quarters.

Still watching the replay...the effort by Jeremy to keep that pass from Lamb was fuckin' awesome...and then the missed FG...we were actually still in it.

Still, stupid penalties.

I'm OK .

I have no idea why posters were down on Jacory Croskery-Merrit. He always had this ability, he just couldn't find room as teams stacked the box.

Can we please stop with this nonsense that the poor pass defense is mostly due to the lack of a pass rush? Even the best defenses don't get pressure on every play, they still need to cover. The pass rush was good yesterday and Dallas still had wide open guys all over the field. We have seen this every week starting with Game 1. Just which game did the secondary play well in again?

I just can't believe it's all on the players. They are forced to play zone and teams are clearly finding giant holes in that zone. I have always been onboard with a new DC and a totally new system because this one sucks.
For me the DC hire will be much more important than any player we might draft. Coordinators are more important game day than HC. I want someone who lives and breaths defense, is happy behind the scenes creating schemes that maximize the talent we have. Talent is obviously very important but you have to have the guy that isn't in the role of the fiery speech, face of the franchise HC and lives in the day to day trenches.
