Yeah, I gotta admit...I had a little 60-year old kinda freak out moment when I saw that sign! The memories...wow...
I still remember a steak place called Emerson's. They advertised all the beer and all the salad you want, I can still hear the jingle. A restaurant was pushing people to drink as much beer as possible before driving home.

That's as stupid as GA...we didn't have Sunday sales until 2010...we had to go out to a bar/restaurant.

The good (or bad) old days. When I worked for SallieMae 30 years ago, they would load us up at their Christmas parties and then send us home. Kind of a Mad Men moment.

Always a good career move to get shit faced at the company Christmas Party.
Back in the early 90s, our Applebee's parties were famous here, 8 stores. Semi-formal, open bar & food...until the Sheraton Century Center finally cancelled us...good Lord, the stories I could tell

My wife watches old movies constantly, they play in the background as I noodle online. I can't even imagine the liver issues people back then faced. I mean they drank constantly in the 50's and it's not beer.

Life expectancy for men in America in the mid 50s was 66. In the mid 2020s 75. No doubt that medical advances have been a significant catalyst though.

It wasn't just the drinking. It seemed like every other adult smoked as well so heavy. Plus there was no such thing as smoking areas. People smoked everywhere so everyone sucked in the smoky air. And the more you drink, the more you smoke.

As a former smoker I can tell you that the smoke bone is connected to the drink bone. Life expectancy in the 50's was 66? That's how old I am now!

Yessir! I can attest to that as a former smoker as well, and almost the same age.

When out drinking at the bars I'd come home, my fingers that held the cigarette would be yellow from the smoke and my clothes would wreak of smoke. I'd leave my leather jacket in the garage to air out.

Looking back, what I put myself through was crazy. I was always very aware of non smokers around my and tried being courteous towards them. However, that didn't cut the mustard if the whole bar or restaurant or plane or office or or holiday party or wherever had a haze of smoke.

Looking back one of the biggest WTFs was smoking sections on airplanes.
For sure, I still think about occasionally when on planes. All of the armrests had ashtrays which were often not cleaned out between flights and there was no separation or special for nonsmokers. I recall having like the last 6 rows of the planes being the smoking section. You'd take a drag and exhale which blew smoke towards the non smokers in the front of the plane

Row 23 non-smoking, row 24 smoking? 🤣

I was on a flight to Hawaii and there was a party area in the back where people were smoking and drinking. Sure made the flight seem shorter. 🙃

So speaking of flying I took my first flight in 15-20 years a few summers ago. I had heard about the cramped seating but until I experienced it myself I had no idea. I'm 6'3" so I'm used to tight spaces but what killed me was the inability to recline. Sitting upright made it impossible to sleep, reading hurt my neck.

So why can't everyone recline just a few inches? If I did this am I an asshole?
