The Jayden Daniels Tracker

It’s one game, with little context, and a lot of ‘opinion’ along with the facts.

Maybe we even agree and it’s the context where we differ. Clearly his play has regressed. He once led an offense that didn’t punt for weeks. Out of this world accuracy numbers. Basically put a very meh team on his back in route to the NFCC. Thats a hard act to follow.

Where we differ I think is on how much of its him, as opposed to the sum of all the parts. I lean hard that it’s the epic mix of suck that has caused the regression. This team has put up the worst 3 week stretch in decades. Even with his Superman cape, I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Watched the first two drives in the last game, didn't get to watching more, guys weren't open much with some exceptions that hit me that I mentioned where I saw Etrz for example open. But windows closed fast.

I found it interesting that Akridge from PFF agreed about guys not getting open and then at the same time agreed later with Warner. How can both be true, lol.

I haven't watched Warner's take yet. But to his point, if you got guys at WRs you don't trust, you aren't going to let it loose the same way. When you are pressued in multiple games by more than 50% of your drop backs, it's going to effect how you see the field.

To me the biggest lesson about the season is while I realized their lack of depth at WR was a problem early on this summer. I didn't realize how it effects the pressure Jayden is under, too. It's great they loaded up on the O line but teams are just blitzing the hell out of Jayden now and crowding the line of scrimmage because there is no threat on the perimeter.

And he's playing big boy teams, with an undermanned team. They have played or are about to 7 of the top 11 defenses in the league. This isn't the Patriots playing an historically weak schedule. If this was Jayden and the scrub WRs against the Titans it wouldn't be as brutal. But yeah in all my years watching the team, the current configuration of WRs I think its the weakest Ive ever seen.

I think it's obvious that having a different set of recievers running different routes in ways he's not 100% familiar with doesn't lend itself to letting the ball go in rhythm, trusting guys will be where they should be, and having 'anticipation'.

I think that's just the nature of QBing. And let's keep it even more real. He probably can't trust the guys that are playing in those spots right now.

All moot for now. Mariota will have some of the same challenges now. And whoever replaces him when HE goes down to injury.

Absolutely.

I think it was Logan who said on a podcast that he heard the WR coach on the sideline talking about a Wr being at the wrong spot.

You got guys off the street running routes. New Wrs every week. Them leading the league in WR drops. Jayden pressured on 50% of his drops in some games.

A guy with Jayden legs is lethal against man generally. But not this year because teams can crowd the boxes and tee off on him because they have no fear of their WRs.

Just some sarcasm not directed at you to make a point, so Jayden facing man and under pressure with scrub WRs somehow has gotten more gun shy and takes off more? Shocking. Tell me its not so!

And a dude with a work ethic off the charts has regressed and am sure context has zero to do with it. lol, he did excel and do it well in his rookie season but that was a one year fluke. Plenty of players see the field and have top notch mechanics and just lose it over night -- especially dudes with reputations with bad work ethics like Jayden, they just keep regressing. We saw how Mahomes excelled in the SB under constant duress. It didn't matter to him at all. Brady in those SBs against the Giants pass rush, just shrugged it off and carved those Giant defenses like hot knife over butter. The idea that a QB needs a running game and WRs to excel has been disproven many times. and lol, all these 50% under pressure games, Jayden needs to man up and own up that it shouldn't effect his play one whit.

Seriously, forgot football for a second. If you have a day at work where everything is conspriing against you, and its jist miserable. It doesn't effect you at all? You are just at top of your game and you shrug it all off? Jayden is still playing well mostly, it's not like he's been a disaster. He's top half in the league with PFF's QB ratings. But he's not been killer. And its just hard for me to come to the conclusion hey the fact that there are thunderstorms and everyday its raining -- that has no impact on his play versus the typically sunny skies that QBs are more likely to play under.

As I posted yesterday, I don’t think Jayden’s struggles necessarily require deep analysis by ‘experts’. The simple eye test shows that he is uncomfortable, exhibiting a lack of confidence, and is thus reacting to that out of instinct for self-preservation which in actuality is having the opposite effect. He needs a mental reboot that I’m sure he will successfully undergo. (A couple of NFL caliber weapons wouldn’t hurt either. 😉)

I think trading Jahan Dotson was a good move, but it was also reflective of a mindset that didn't value route running--which is how you get open against man coverage. Dotson was our best receiver at the stem of his routes--getting open against man. Now Dotson was not a natural man coverage beater despite being solid at the stem of his routes because he lacked physicality and allowed the corners physicality to affect him so he would not have been a great answer to the man coverage we have seen this year.

But this year the league has figured out the best way to play the Commanders is tight man coverage. Jayden can scramble some against man coverage, but if you have a disciplined D-Line that can somewhat mitigate that. McLaurin is decent, but not great against man. He is good at contested catches but middle of the pack is getting separation. Deebo is slightly below average at getting separation. We just don't have the types of receivers who are good against tight man coverage. We need to get a route runner with more physicality than Dotson.

Jahan Dotson averages 1 catch per game in Philly. He had 19 in 17 games last year and he has 8 in 8 games this year. He couldn’t beat out anyone on last year’s roster. He isn’t the cure to help Jayden.

I think you missed my point. I said I think he trade was good and Dotson would not be the answer to the increased man coverage we have seen this year because his lack of physicality means he is average to a little below average against man coverage despite having good route stems. My point was that that this team really values competitiveness and physicality in WR's. McLaurin is great at the catch point, McCaffrey is competitive at the catch point, Deebo is really physical, more than they value route running where Dotson was the best route runner on the team and they traded him. If the way to play Daniels is going to be tight man coverage we are going to need better route runners and man coverage beaters which is something this team doesn't really have even if we were healthy.

I think i have some credibility for not being a pollyana about the team this season. In the summer, i was a bit of a doom and gloom guy as to expecting early set backs. I was wrong about the Giants game but that ended up a peak moment, its been up and down, and more down since. And I think in the Giants game they got lucky that it was Wilson instead of Dart and they didn't know yet what they had in Skattebo.

i didn't like parts of the off season especially what they did at WR. I didn't like that Jayden didn't have Noah or Terry in camp and didn't make one throw in the preseason. I didn't like hearing aout the super light camp. I didn't like that they got their asses kicked in the preseason -- yeah it was their backups playing but lol what if the season evolved where the backups would have to play which ironically did indeed play out. The fact that some NFL observors defended Quinn's decision to keep Jayden in the game because hey he's not a lot of reps with these WRs brings it home.

There was in my view a too cool for school vibe with this team where Quinn and Peters (both whom I like) had an edge of cockiness about them. And I look i don't blame them. It's human nature when everyone is sucking up to you. And I felt they might lose their edge and it would filter to the team. I know all this is amorphous and there is no way for me to know a vibe about a team. But it felt that way to me. And it did feel that way to some beat guys around the team.

While it doesn't shock me that fans have turned quicky on Peters and Quinn albiet it does surprise me its to this extent. I am shocked about the turning on Jayden. As Keim likes to say he's been around a lot of QBs here, Jayden is the real deal. Among other things his work ethic is second to none. He's humble and will keep working to improve.

I don't think Peters is a moron. I think he's a smart dude. He's made some mistakes. But he's done plenty good, too. To me the next move is on Peters. And two things I expect

A. They will load up on weapons. Peters' off season at WR reminds me of Rivera at O line. Remember that one year where the O line subs played almost as well as their starters and Masko was hailed as some sort of genius who can make lemonade out of lemons. The next off season Rivera let some O lineman go and did squat to help the unit and it fell off a cliff. Felt like that last year with Peters at WR. Zaccheus was a low key hit. Noah was a good signing. Dyami developed at the end of that season. Heck even Crowder was good. So why not Gallup, Osborne, Chris Moore? Well, Peters lucked out that year. It wasn't because his every instinct of cheap discarded WRs are amazing or Jayden will turn water into wine at that spot. it was arrogant and it blew up in their face.

It blew up in their face in ways I didn't imagine. It hurt Jaydens confidence as we are speaking about here. I was just listening to Bullock talk about it. He says you can see Jayden sees it, he's looking right at the Wr, but he doesn't trust the WR. Also for as much as they focused on the O line, the Wr spot hurt their protection. The WRs posing no threats have allowed defenses to close the running game and just tee off at Jayden with blitzes.

Jayden killed the blitz last year. Why not this year? Some of his new critics say hey its because he doesn't see it this year. To me that's absurd. He's not killing the blitz because Chris Moore and McCaffrey or Burks or whomever is the Z Wr du jour aren't beating their coverage.

B. Take some chances on signing big FAs. Part of the reason why this team is old is because he's signing old cheap FAs. Take some chances and sign the Milton Williams, Josh Sweat types. Don't be so afraid of making mistakes.

You hit this one out of the park. This is what I’ve been trying to get at, but you said it better.

I do think a lot of the floundering on Jayden is a sign of the PTSD this fanbase has with the quarterback position.

Folks also want to be mad about something. I get that too. No matter where you fell on the preseason optimism scale, I don’t think any of us saw this epic shitstorm coming. Looking forward to 2026, 3 weeks shy of Thanksgiving is remarkably cruel. It’s highly likely that folks are going to spend their Christmas Day watching Sam Hartman or Josh Johnson leading a punt brigade. All of this is hard to accept, and miserable folks are going to be miserable.

Talking specific about man coverage. Yeah agree even when healthy, Terry isn't always hot against man. Deebo ditto.

But Terry and Noah while not the best seperators can make contested catches in tight coverage. If I recall Noah led the league and obtaining pass interference penalties. Are you throwing the ball and hoping butter fingers Chris Moore is going to catch a ball in tight coverage?

Jahan struggled against press.

A dude like Jayden should be able to kill man because of his running ability. Also as i mentioned, last year he killed it against the blitz.

I do agree with your larger point which when upgrading the WR crew this off season, you want dudes who can beat man. I've started watching the college prospects. the first one that hits me is Jordyn Tyson against man. I like Tate a lot too. Lemon is a baller but i am mixed about an undersized slot WR.

Avoiding man coverage will help the Packers vs. Jayden Daniels

Last week, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 233 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions over 30 passes in a 21-6 win over the New York Giants. When you dig a little closer into the game flow, though, his stats weren’t as impressive as they seemed.
For whatever reason, the Giants thought it was a good idea to play a lot of man coverage against Daniels, a bold call against a mobile quarterback who can break the pocket with defenders’ backs turned to the passer. On the day, New York played 35 percent of their plays in some form of man, disproportionately playing those types of snaps earlier on in the game.

In the first two drives against the Giants, Daniels, mostly against man coverage, went five of seven for 71 yards passing and a touchdown. He added three carries for 20 yards on the ground. His adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A), which includes sack yards and attributes bonuses for touchdowns and minuses for interceptions, on those drives was 13. As a reference, the league-leader in ANY/A last year was Lamar Jackson at 9.38, the only passer over 8.02. There’s no doubt about it, Daniels was hot to start the game.

Among other things the more I think about it, the fact that Jayden was killing it against the blitz last year. Killer good. Heck Louis Reddick did a whole thing on it after the Lions game about how the Lions killed Darnold and the Vikings with the blitz and made the mistake they could do the same to Daniels.

Why are teams blitzing the hell out of Jayden and trying to beat him with pressure -- considering he ate that alive last year? Because to beat the blitz you need Wrs to make plays. he doesn't have that clearly. Also when you play big boy defenses like he is, they are capable of winning with 4, too.

If you told me last year that we'd be bemoaing losing McCaffrey for the season because he might be the best outside WR we got -- I'd think you are on drugs. But that's the bed they are lying in now.

Last off season, it was all hands on deck to fix the O line. I think they did a decent job of it. I don't blame the O line for the pressure mostly. I blame that teams are just teeing off because of the lack of weapons. But I do think they will go to town on giving Jayden weapons this off season. no way they don't. If we see it, they do.

But back to Jayden. He works like crazy. He's competitive like crazy. Grounded, humbled dude. His mechanics are borderline flawless. His athleticism is off the charts. He has the clutch gene. On and on an on. My concern about him is at a 0 out 100. Nada.

While I am shocked that some of our fans are questioning whether Jayden is the guy. Part of me likes it too. I've been using the Rocky 3 reference all summer. Heck we might as well go down that full rabbit hole. After their best season in 30 plus years -- some fans are discarding the idea that the worst injury season in eons (yes there were other mistakes made, too IMO) is a major factor. And instead they've turned on Peters, Quinn and now Jayden - the three muskateers that led them to glory just last season. From what I've heard about all three, they are competitive as heck so for this to turn from people sucking up to them non stop to months later they suck -- lol, i think its quite the fuel for them to find their edge for 2026.

As down as I was this summer, expecting some setback (granted not to this extent), I thought it would at a minimum set them up for a big 2026. I feel even more strongly about that now.

I don't see how anyone can watch that Warner video and not have concerns. It was most definitely damning and most definitely provided context, Warner broke down each play extensively. I heard this thought on the radio and see now others have the same terrifying thought. Jayden is gun shy, perhaps due to the injuries. He pulls out of a play and starts running way too soon instead of standing in the pocket and delivering the ball to a receiver who is either open or about to be open. He was doing this last season but not doing it this season.

This was a concern coming out of college, it was removed on that glorious Monday Night against the Bengals. But now it appears to be back and that's pretty scary. He absolutely needs to play when he is healthy this season, he needs to get some confidence back.
Don’t necessarily disagree, but I’m not nearly as worried about it. As others has mentioned, this is mainly due to the injuries/lack of talent as far as weapons. I love AP, but agree with those saying he deserves some criticism here for not signing any quality FA talent at WR or TE considering all the cap space he had to work with. But in his defense, we’ve all known there were just too many holes in this roster to fix them all at once, and while they’re getting fixed, new holes keep popping up. Fully confident though that AP will do something about the lack of weapons this off-season. Even after this ugly season, those types of players will still want to come play with a QB like Jayden. Sign em up!

I haven't watched Warner's take yet.

It shows. You keep saying receivers aren’t getting open, but there is no way you could watch Warner review the tape and go on thinking that. Even if you think he is wrong, you should at least look at it. “He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that.”

Other than that, a lot of what you are saying, especially about who Jayden is and what is happening around him, is fair. There is good reason to believe he will bounce right back from this sophomore slump and be the franchise quarterback we all expect.

Great post. The graph is damning of the argument JD5 has regressed the way Warner says. I watched the Warner clip on the Seattle game, and virtually all of the 'open' receivers were either checkdown RBs or Ertz. I did see what looled like a Daniels miss of Deebo deep middle once - but the Warner opinion was way over the top, especially as his hypotheses (not seeing the field etc.) is 'supported' by video of one game. Every QB in the league 'misses' open receivers every game. And it's one thing to stop the video and see what looks like space in front of the QB, equaling time to throw; it's another thing in real time when that 4 feet of space is between you and a 6'4" DE running full speed with his hands up blocking your view, 1.0 second after the snap. Warner knows better, he's trying to make a name as an analyst.

JD5 under pressure quickly and constantly due to a shockingly leaky OL, PS-quality receivers consistently blanketed, and his security wubba Ertz is 5th in the NFL in drops (Commanders as a team are 9th). And it's been like this all season, not surprising having playing something like 7 of the top 10 defenses with 2025 Orioles level of injuries all over the roster.

I don't buy the argument JD5 is fragile, either. The knee bruise and the dislocated elbow are freak injuries that can and do happen to anybody regardless of "build." The hamstring injury you say? Tunsil just pulled a hamstring. McLaurin, Yankoff, Quan, Owens, among others, have all had hamstring injuries this year. We had a great year last year injury-wise, this year we're having a terrible year with injuries, and not just with Daniels. It happens. Depressing to see this 'frame' argument revived after Daniels missed just one game due to injury in 2 years playing against many of these same guys in the SEC. It's just as infuriating as the 'one read and run' nonsense.

Dude puts together a dozen clips from an awful all around game, and in some of those clips, he admits the scheme isn’t setup for success. He also has to color most of his comments with this ain’t easy, that’s open in the NFL (and some are a real stretch), etc. Let you tell it and there’s receivers running wide open all over the field and he’s blind and scared.

The fact remains that when you are looking at a wide receiving corps whose depth is dependent upon Chris Moore, Tay Martin and elevates guys like Luke McCaffrey who seems to be very limited in what he can do - basically go deep in straight line and catch that ONE pass for 40 yards every other week, you are setting the bar pretty low for your pass offense.

Combine that with a player in Deebo Samuel that at 30 is what he has been in recent years - a physical player that catches and runs within that 5-15 yard zone but is not really a consistent threat as an outside receiver and tends to miss stretches of games each season with various injuries.

We saw that when McLaurin first went out. It was actually Chris Moore that Kliff sent down the field back in games like the Chargers contest when Washington was still competitive overall.

The Commanders have what I would consider to be the poorest wide receiver room with everyone healthy of the 4 teams in the NFC East.

Even suffering through multiple injuries last season (ending up on IR late in season) and playing with a backup quarterback CeeDee Lamb was able to put up 100 catches and 1,100 yards.

That's an elite receiver playing through injuries and still being effective. When he was healthy in a previous year he put up 120 catches, 1700 yards and 12 TDs.

We don't have that type of threat. And we don't have a TE capable of running the seam routes down the field so defenses tend to own the middle of the field deep against Washington.

If McLaurin is healthy you double team him and then single everyone else and force Washington to drive 75-80 yards using 16 play drives.

The graph is damning of the argument JD5 has regressed.

I’m not so sure that chart is measuring the things Warner is talking about. For example, how much is “non first read rate” a function of how good your first option is?

If you go back to last season Washington scored a lot of points. But most of those points were scored after 10-15 play drives where Daniels and Co. were able to move in chunks of 5-6 yards.

Outside of several instances, we lacked wide receivers going long like we see St. Brown or Puka Nakua, often when the pure quickness of these players leaves defensive backs behind.

Again, looking at our wide receiver room we don't have these types of players.

We have two veteran wide receivers at or nearing 30 in McLaurin and Samuel, the latter of which by statline is more a TE in this system, and then a depth chart that includes picks that haven't acclimated to the NFL at this point or call ups from the practice squad.

Kurt Warner says a lot of questionable things. He played with Isaac Bruce and Terry Holt in STL and then Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin with the Cardinals so I don't know that from a pocket view he has ever been playing with a skill group like the one we have in Washington.

One thing you can see over time is if a quarterback doesn't trust a receiver to catch the ball or be in the right place (even if he is open somewhere else nearby on review of film) he isn't going to go in his direction.

Daniels from what I have seen hasn't really trusted McCaffrey in the past and up until recently before both were injured we had not seen McCaffrey on the field that much in 2025 in key situations - and that's Kliff's decision.

The irony is I noticed in twitter and talk radio some taking victory laps and making this to be about Maye > Daniels.

Coming from a dude who had a slight preference for Maye over Daniels but loved them both. i think its a bit premature and IMO unfair and a bit gross (not for all the criticism but some of the more over the top critics) when its coming from some of our fans. Jayden led this team to the best season in over 30 years. So people jumping off the ship after a season where he has adversity through the roof -- worst defense in the NFL, worst WR corp in the NFL, no run game after some early success, and some bad luck injuries of his own.

So the Kurt Warner stuff. Same dude who criticized Drake Maye THIS season. Same dude who was not high on Maye before the draft. Look I still like both Daniels and Maye. I got no animosity for Maye. Seems like a good dude. But if people want to turn it to Maye >> Daniels -- Kurt Warner ironically not been their friend as much as they think.

During an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show Wednesday, Warner said Maye was relying on a little too much on the off-script stuff for his liking. “I think Drake is playing some good football,” the former Super Bowl winner said. “But right now, a little of it is a little more backyard football, than solid, consistent quarterback play.” The NFL Network analyst believes Maye has been quick to flee the pocket and create a play if his first read is covered. “That’s a tough world to live in,” Warner said. “To be a great quarterback in this league, you’ve got to be able to consistently live in the pocket when the situation dictates that, and then go a create and be that special playmaker beyond that.”

Even though he can be annoying at times I think Tom Brady is a lot more cerebral about playing quarterback and insighting about the quarterback vs. receiver play overall in the games I have watched and in comments I have seen.

Again, Warner played in STL and AZ with Hall of Fame wide receivers in both cities and for him there were regular 'layups' that were there for the taking. In addition to the receivers in STL he also had NFL rushing leader Marshall Faulk in the backfield.

That embarrassment of riches IMO skews his perception of quarterbacks playing behind questionable offensive lines and with receivers that may not engender much trust during practice and game preparation - a key reason these receivers are not looked to make plays in key situations on Sundays.

That applies as much to Drake Maye in 2024 as it does to Daniels in 2025.

Yeah, Kurt Warner’s career was a real cake walk. What would he know about making quick decisions and throwing into tight windows with subpar talent?
