Official Game Thread - Week 9 - Seahawks @ Commanders

Terry and Yankoff are out. Deebo looked back to himself with no limitations. Tunsil and Newton practiced but no decision made yet. They went harder on Jayden than anyone else since they played Monday night. They made Jayden go full speed and he had no limitations.

I've been away for a week and a half due to a tragic situation in our community I was helping with.

So, I'm just catching up. A few general thoughts:

- I still find it hard to believe Darnold is good. There is more evidence of him not being good than being good. That said, he's playing well. So maybe he's good now.
- We CAN win this game on Sunday night. Will we? Dunno. But we can. For essentially 3 reasons:
1. It's the NFL. This happens every year, actually multiple times a year: a team which needs a win gets the win when they are desperate to get the win.
2. Daniels, if healthy, is still the best player on the field. And that can make up for a lot of sins
3. There was definite improvement in the defense for a half. Can they build on that? Again, dunno. But they managed to turn over the Chiefs twice, and hold them to 7 points. Mahomes said "their energy was better than ours in the first half." Maybe that continues at home in prime time in a game they have to have?
- I'm pissed about Terry, but I'll put that in the Terry thread.

This is a huge game. If we win this game, we could still be in the hunt for something. There's a lot of season left, and as the Nat's said during their world series season, "stay in the hunt" because they had an atrocious start to the season. But if they lose this game, it would be REALLY tough to consider playoffs as an outcome for the season. Possible? Yes. Probable? no.

I'm looking forward to the game. I think they're going to play like a desperate team, and that bodes well for them.

These players have to show up. National TV, SB era, season on the line, trade deadline immediately after. We must pay homage to the legend. Jayden must show why he's next up. No one cares but I do in saying that we also need to give Terry hope to return. He is a difference maker and wants to help us when he can. We can't lose the season before he gets a chance and yes I know a lot of you think that he is the one responsible for this season.

Seattle plays the AFC and NFC south this year. They don't have to play the gauntlet of the AFC west and nfc south like us. We've also already have played against Love, Herbert, Dak, and Maholmes. They haven't played top QB or offense except for Baker who shredded them. Don't forget our first half against KC on the road. This will be at home with a fired up crowd. It's just clips but honestly Jayden looked like the healthiest I've seen him in a long time and he didn't have a brace. All things equal, we are the better team even with the injuries. We just have to play like it
 
I think the energy is going to be there tomorrow night. The question is whether the execution will be there.

I listened to Abram’s show from Thursday. Note that he’s the radio voice of the team and an employee of the team.

He was SUPER critical about the execution and self inflicted wounds. He said he was frustrated.

He pointed out a number of the mistakes, like the drips, missed tackles, guys clearly going the wrong way.

Bram isn’t Mr. Film Study but he does watch film and he does generally know what he’s talking about. And given he’s employed by the team, he’s never over the top critical, certainly not a shock jock hot take artist.

But for him to come out and express his frustration with the quality of play, that takes a lot.

Becuase he has to go in and talk to Quinn and company after the fact.

I’ll note, Larry Michael (no S, just Larry Michael) was never remotely this objective.
 
The bottom line is that if we play like we did in the first half against KC and the last 2 and a half quarters against LAC, we are still one of the best teams in the league. We just have to find that level for a full game and consistently. The good thing is that both Jayden and Deebo this week seem like the healthiest they have been in a long time so I expect them both to play well and the rest of the team to follow.

I may be in the minority but I still believe that if both teams play their best then we are better and Jayden is the best player on the field. Sooner or later it has to come together. We are due.
 
I don't think the official injury report was posted.



Much conversation on McLaurin's injury situation in the Terry thread.

Yankoff being out is a low-key big deal because of his help on special teams. But not insurmountable.

Bates' injury is interesting, and it will be see what happens. He went from not on the injury report to full on Thursday and then limited on Friday. So he slid backwards. Not great trend there.

Having both Johnny Newton and Kindlaw on the injury report this week + Payne was on the injury report last week isn't great for a DE that's already missing all of it's DE's.

I think Jayden being on the field is a HUGE equalizer. That said, the Seahawks defense is outstanding and well coached. He's going to need some help from somewhere on the offense. Where? Not sure. The most pleasant surprise would be if the run game could come back to life. That's unlikely given the Seahawks are an elite rushing defense. But if there was one thing that could really helpful, that would be it.
 
I didn't know why Chosen was released and I don't know why he wasn't active this week along with Burks since he looked great to me but maybe he wasn't doing something that the coaches wanted.

They released Chosen to clear a spot on the PS for the kicker Wright. They knew he would be available after the weekend, then they released Wright and re-signed him.

He wasn't going to be activated because both McLaurin and Deebo were back. He might be brought up because McLaurin is hurt again.

Why the didn't use somebody else, not sure. But it was pretty clearly they had to clear a spot, they picked a guy who wasn't going to be picked up by anybody else, and then signed him as soon as they didn't need the spot.

I think that they released Chosen before Gay got hurt but either way, with both Deebo and McLaurin being injury concerns, I feel like he still should have never been cut. Then sure enough Terry didn't finish the game. We could have used him. Lane looked like he wasn't ready at all.

They brought him back but they didn't bring him up. The tweet I posted is always the final decision. They chose not to elevate him from the practice squad for this game. I am excited to see Burks though
 
It's kind of crazy Treylon Burks was available - I mean, a former 1st round pick in 2022? That was the draft where we grabbed Jahan Dotson way before George Pickens got selected, and there were something like 6 WRs taken in the first round. He was probably overdrafted. Still - his player comp is Deebo Samuels Jr.... not a burner but a super strong WR who is very physical. I don't know why the Titans couldn't figure out how to use him - he only had 53 career catches there? He has had a problem with concussions, so that is at least a small part of it.

But if you are going to add a guy on a wing and a prayer, he's got a pretty good pedigree. It just didn't work out in Tennessee for whatever reason.
