Official Game Thread - Week 9 - Seahawks @ Commanders

I respect Mariota for not sucking last season, but if Jayden has to sit out again for a while, I'd rather the team find a sprained pinky on Mariota that finishes him for the season and let Hartman have some make a wish games.

What’s your thinking there? Sucking so bad we improve draft position?

Because it would certainly stunt player development and limit roster/player evaluations. And I don’t know if that’s a smart trade off.

It's not. Hartman is pure, unadulterated garbage. He does, however, have beautiful hair......

Going off of how the offensive line looks worse and the handful of defensive players that shined last season look so lost this year, I don't think there's been a whole lot of development to say that they'll miss out on from here out. Mariota could develop an actual injury, Daniels could develop worse injuries, but that's about all I'm expecting for this year.

Listening to Logan Paulsen he seems to think Seattle might be the best team in the NFL, wow. It's a team I haven't watched.

I haven't "watched" them either, in the sense that I think you mean too (actual games). I have seen highlights, and I know how their HC (who almost definitely wanted to come here, but we didn't move fast enough - it was heavily implied in quotes of his) hired his coordinators and staff; he went heavy into a process that was merit based, it sounded like, eschewing nepotism.

I personally resonate with JD5, and I also personally resonate with what Macdonald (obviously with both, it comes from what I read about both of them, having not met either). Here is a good example:
I really like this quote:
“That helps a lot because it’s not about the win, it’s not about the loss, it’s about the process,” defensive end Leonard Williams said last week. “It would be bad for us to come in after a win and be feeling ourselves and not go back to what got us the win, which was the process. It would also be bad on the opposite end if we lost the game and came in hanging our heads and trying to change something to get a win the next week.

“We always talk about process over results, and I think that’s continuing to show up.”
That is pretty much exactly what I like to preach as well. Process over results. If you have the right process, wins/losses, successes/failures... it's all fuel to analyze and *Get better* because that's got to be the key. For sports it's arguably more important because of the variability of an opponent. You need to compete with yourself always, always measure how you do against your standards, not how you did against another team since that changes too much. If that message and concept is delivered in word and action, I think you are getting close to optimizing at least the principle. The devil's in the details of course.

I value that kind of thinking way more than lip service to little mantras (which sometimes are important too for motivation and focus, I know), but you have to have a really good over-arching philosophy that gets you to the pinnacle and lets you stay there. I am not sure what DQ's philosophy is there; I know I have heard about "winning time moments" and some of smaller window aspects, and I have heard of piecemeal film study and analysis, and going over mistakes, but personally I like the idea of a big focus on overall improvement always. It's similar to what Bellichick and other great coaches have consistently preached. I think it's pretty straightforward as a concept and to me you can't beat it. It should be a standard mantra but I have only heard it directly referenced by handfuls, and I have read various articles like the above with players talking about it like they didn't hear it from other coaches, which tells me it is not as common as it probably should be.

I tend to think that KC and Philly are better than Seattle in a direct head-to-head matchup. I just think Seattle has arguably looked better overall this season due to matchups; hopefully we can make enough plays to win this one!

Washington lost 3 in row last year and then won the next 7 before losing in the nfc championship. They feel like they can go on another run and the first half at kc reminded them of that. We can pull it off
That team had a softer schedule, full health , and generally looked worlds better during that losing streak.

The ball bouncing out of Deebo's hands into KC's hands is closer to Jamison Crowder fumbling the 2023 punt return than it is to Noah Brown catching the hail mary.

Honestly if you look at the Hawks closely, I think that they are a little overrated. They haven't really played a great offense or QB all year besides Baker and he destroyed them. They haven't played against Love, Herbert, Maholmes, and Dak like us. I believe that Jayden can shred them if he's on

The issue is more the losses to Atlanta & Chicago (lesser extent also Dallas). Those are games that most of us likely penciled in as wins before the season and once they turned into losses, then you jump to the next two games and assume just based on a numbers game that they had to win one or both to stay afloat. Lose to Seattle to go 3-6, and the numbers game gets even tougher, even if the team gets healthy and starts winning some games.

I know this season's schedule is tougher on paper, but being perfectly honest, I don't think any of these teams so far would have looked nearly as good had the Commanders been healthy going into them. It doesn't mean they win them all, because with this defense a loss is always on the table, but now we are coupling a bad defense with an offense that struggles to not screw up themselves as well. This team was winning games last season with a pretty mediocre defense as well, and I know the schedule was easier, but the two playoff wins to me validate what they were doing in the regular season.

As for the game, Seattle has an elite defense and they are fully healthy coming off of the bye.

I did not realize that Seattle was coming off a bye week. So, we are the most injured team in football coming off a 3-game losing streak, playing a 5-2 team coming off a bye week, no wonder we are 6 point underdogs at home.

Still, I am relatively optimistic about this one for other reasons. We have been a good home team (2-1 this year and 9-3 during DQ’s tenure). Seattle has a history of being a poor road team (.598 at home vs .442 on the road). We lead the all-time series 13-10. The Super Bowl era throwbacks are good for the vibes. Our great 2024 run was preceded by a 3-game skid. And of course having Jayden always gives you a chance.

Not that I would predict a win based on those trends, I just think it could happen. Here’s hoping it does, because we are going to have to win some games we are supposed to lose to make up for losing a bunch we were supposed to win early on. As I said earlier, if we could find a way to win one of these two home games against Seattle and Detroit as well as the Miami game on neutral turf, then we would go into the bye 5-6, which is probably our last real chance to get back in the hunt, and I’m not ready to give up on the season just yet.

Is this the third team we play coming off a bye? I think it's the second time we're coming off a Monday night to play a team on a bye, too.

To keep playing teams off byes during our short weeks when we also have one of the toughests SOS in the league seems downright cruel. I wonder if we lead the league in playing teams off their bye on short rest?

Yeah the scheduling Gods killed us this season. If I recall they have 4 teams coming off bye weeks this year and one of the worst rest differentials in the league

All true except for the Seahawks have a league best 9 game road win streak dating back to last year so they think that they are road warriors right now

Beating Seattle, I’m confident in it. Jayden goes Superman mode. Seattles defense is nasty yes, but it’s put up or shut up for this team and I think they find a way.

If they don’t, time to ship out a ton of folks for the deadline haha
