I think that's an oversimplification but I get that those players aren't incompetent and that there are opportunities there. It's still not the same as having Terry and Deebo and Noah Brown and Ekeler out there - guys Jayden knows well, can anticipate their actions, and trusts. Not making a mistake and being perhaps overly cautious is a bigger factor when a QB doesn't have 'his guys' out there. That's all I'm saying.

To me JD has been big on trust. He trusts you to be where you’re supposed to be he lets it rip on the read before the break. If he doesn’t trust that you usually don’t get the ball. My theory is due to injuries he’s forced to throw to guys he’s not developed any trust with. This leads to holding the ball till the break to verify the dudes going where he expects him to go. But this leads to more pressures and then rushed throws effecting accuracy. But I’m just a message board hack so what do I know???

That feels gratuitous to Mariota. He had a day against the Raiders as has everyone else to line up against them.

He had a very solid game against Atlanta too. The offense put up enough points to win. Without a running game. And constant duress ftom pass pressure.

We didnt lose that game because of the offense. Our defense was a seive and didnt stop them all game.

Except Daniels has been throwing to these guys all offseaon. Terry and Noah have missed the entire offseason. Daniels has beem throwing to Samuel and these guys the entire time. Thats a lot of reps.

Possible. But Mariota is consistently giving us the best back-up QB play in the NFL. He’s putting up 24 points per game and keeping us in games.

And ALWAYS in less than ideal circumstances.

He’s obviously not in the same stratosphere as Daniels…. but he’s got great command of the offense. And he’s played better than Jayden has this year.

Possible. But Mariota is consistently giving us the best back-up QB play in the NFL. He’s putting up 24 points per game and keeping us in games.

And ALWAYS in less than ideal circumstances.

He’s obviously not in the same stratosphere as Daniels…. but he’s got great command of the offense. And he’s played better than Jayden has this year.

I like Mariota as our backup but stop short of thinking he’s played better than Jayden overall, all things considered. We are likely going to find out though soon enough.

That’s fine. Jayden has not played well at all this year (on a game level). Of course he’s had some moments/plays that are spectacular and special. But he’s nowhere close to last year when he was a X-factor. He hasnt take any over a game yet… or even a half for that matter. More like a good drive here and there…

And given this defense leaves no margin for error… it’s nowhere near enough.

Meanwhile a guy I liked in the draft and drafted onto my dynasty fantasy team in April, Orande Gladsden II, is breaking out by week six of his rookie year for the Chargers. 5th round pick, moves like a WR, they made him work on his blocking the first few weeks before they trusted him with many snaps, even though he flashed right away in the red zone. Just put up 7/164/1 as a rookie.

Obviously I’m picking and choosing here, there was no way to know he’d look so good. And Sinnott could develop into a starter. But do any of us really expect him to ever have a single game like Gladsden just had? Those are WR1 numbers, and he’s athletic as hell.

Just disheartening given Sinnott felt like a bit of a reach at the time but has the pedigree.

I don't think front office and coaches were aligned on the vision for him. If you recall, there was some talk of Kyle J from SF with him. I don't ever really recall them using him as a FB or H-Back here. What sucks for him is, despite the athleticism scores, I don't think many think he has the technical proficiency with route running to be a good F TE. He also doesn't have prototypical size for a Y TE.

I do vaguely remember those comps, yeah. I’d be surprised if the personnel department and coaching staff weren’t on the same page with that pick though, AP seems exceedingly collaborative if anything, right?

I get wanting to defend our franchise quarterback, but it’s clear he is playing worse than last year, more turnovers, huge drop in completion percentage, missing time to injuries, etc. I still believe he has been and will be great for us, but evidently the sophomore slump is real.

I mentioned this in another thread and people were quick to point out the injuries at WR, inconsistent offensive line play, etc. There is truth in those excuses, this is the ultimate team sport after all, so there is plenty of blame to go around, but Jayden does get some of it.

He was playing at an MVP level last year. So from that perspective, sure - he’s playing worse than last year.

But the guy had no run game yesterday, missing his top 3 wideouts, and still had a few touchdowns under his belt at halftime. Wearing a knee brace.

Is there even an example in the modern day NFL where a team was missing its top 3 receivers? The 49ers might be the closest example but they have CMac in the backfield, and obviously a better defense.
