I recall the QB School guy talked about this last year. That is, some people assume that all QBs work their asses off especially in the off season but from his observation its simply not true. Some QBs have the work ethic and plenty do not. Fortunately, Washington has one of those Brady level maniacs in Jayden as far as obsessive work ethic.

Coming from a guy who probably had like 20 posts on the third day of the draft with Croskey-Merritt on my wish list. I think the hype is a bit over the top. He had a good game. I think he will have a good year. But am not ruling out Jeanty, Hampton among others because their debut wasn't as good. I do think though Croskey-Merritt ends up a good one.

At least Caleb sent an important message to the world yesterday with his nails. I'll take smiles and a win all day long over Caleb's nail drama.

LOL. The nail polish and other red flags were all right there to see for anyone who wasn’t too stuck on Caleb to pay attention. How fortunate for us that the Bears GM was one of those people!

One thing about Daniels that I haven't see mentioned here, but was beaten to death by Brady on Sunday, is his tendency to roll right. That's going to be picked up on and game planned for, which to me is worrying.

Thing is, if Brady said it... Jayden and Kingsbury already know it. I would almost bank on a lot of roll outs to the left against Green Bay.

If there were ever a QB class shallow enough to allow for a RB winning OROY it may be this year, although Ward looked pretty good and was let down by his weapons, and Dart could surprise. Any above average rookie QB is usually a threat to take OROY.

I kind of doubt Bill racks up enough raw volume to compete for the award, given the way we like to split touches. Always possible I guess.

Egbuka has a shot too. He's like Super Terry.

Honestly, his banter reminds me of Farve and how he used to jaw at/with opponents like Sapp. He just seemed to be having fun playing the game. As a fan, I thought it must be really hard to get in the head of an opponent with that mindset. I know as a soccer player, the best way to get in the head of an opponent who just ran me over was to get up smiling and laugh it off.

Wild article about Caleb from a reputable reporter. Grant Paulsen just doubled down on what others have said which is he heard Calbe wasn't the #2 QB on their board -- it was McCarthy after Daniels.

The most dramatic spectacle of them all occurred on Dec. 26. His team was hosting the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football. Commercials rolled during a timeout, so nobody at home saw this poignant moment that perfectly summarized the 2024 Chicago Bears. In the wake of two firings, heartbreaking defeats, staggering to the finish line of an agonizing 5-12 season, interim head coach Thomas Brown tried to explain something to his starting quarterback and… no. Williams was not having it.

An auto-response kicked in.

As he had done many times to many coaches all season, Williams turned his head and walked away. Shane Waldron, before getting fired as offensive coordinator, used to stay quiet. Not Brown. Not a stern, blunt, old-school coach who believed this 22-year-old crossed a line of disrespect. The typically calm coach lost it. On the headset, another Bears assistant coach recalls Brown pressing the mic to finish his conversation: “Get your ass back here right now! Don’t fucking walk away when I’m talking to you!”

Unfazed, Williams sashayed away. Right back to the huddle.

The Bears lost, 6-3.

“That’s when you knew the world was coming to an end,” one coach says.

He pauses. He thinks back. The world might’ve ended that day, but in truth? All warning signs were obvious seven months prior. Outside the walls of Halas Hall, hype reigned. Tickets sold in record numbers when the Bears made Williams the No. 1 overall pick. No. 18 jerseys flew off the shelves. This glitzy gazelle in the open field was universally extolled as the charismatic, electric, dare we say Mahomesian playmaker these Bears have lacked since inception in 1919. OTAs arrived, coaches unwrapped this gift from the football gods who’ve cursed this organization for so long and… yikes.

Williams struggled to execute elementary tasks. Every day was a new disaster.

That early, that spring, the Bears changed the snap count to appease Williams. Instead of using a combination of colors and numbers like every other team in the NFL, the Bears reverted to a “Ready, set, go!” straight out of JV football because that’s what the quarterback requested. Aside from the obvious on-field consequences — defenders could tee off — the Bears were establishing a troubling precedent in allowing a rookie to tell them exactly what to do. Veterans couldn’t believe it. “Are you shitting me?” one receiver asked a coach.

When a play call was sent in, he’d stare at this wristband for a painful length of time. “Like it was in another language,” another coach says. Williams verbalized the call in the huddle, it was wrong half the time, and then players would be lined up wrong all over the field. Verbiage was truncated. Huddling was minimized. The playbook, dumbed down. The Bears offense devolved into an exercise of trial and error to fit whatever the USC rookie demanded.

All of which would’ve been manageable if Williams was willing to work. He was not.

For all the talk about wanting to be great, this new quarterback didn’t seem to have the desire. When he wasn’t storming away from a coach, he was telling veteran wide receivers how to run their routes before taking a game rep himself. In the meeting room, he barely said a word and didn’t pay attention. Coaches often caught Williams on the wrong page of the gameplan completely. He blew off film sessions and lifts.

Chicago made him a captain.

Games began.

Chaos reigned.

Also the lukewarm PFF scores for this O line was echoed by Jay Gruden upon rewatching the game. He's high on Daniels and this team but didn't think the O line played hot on Sunday.

In their defense the Giants D line isn't easy.

For me, seeing somebody who is that preoccupied with the appearance of their fingernails tells you a lot about what is actually important to them.

Pre-draft I had all kinds of misgivings about Caleb. His personality, his work-ethic. Nothing I have seen from him as a pro thus far makes me feel I was wrong.

Makes you wonder why Johnson took the job if he had any inkling of how Williams might be. Surely other coaches would have told him? Johnson could have gone almost anywhere to coach. Things don't seem to add up. Maybe BJ thinks he can work with him?

They have a decent roster. And they loaded up more this off season. Caleb has talent. So I can see the optimism from Ben.

The season is young of course. But yeah I heard that Caleb was high maintenance but I had no idea it was that crazy.

I mean, Johnson wanted to coach Caleb Williams back in 2024. He let it be known he could leave for the right fit, but when it became clear the Bears were not firing their HC he cancelled the interview with the Commanders. There were rumors that he didn't think Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye had "it" that Caleb had, which is why the #2 pick wasn't worth it for him.

This is absolutely what Johnson wanted.

No need to double down on that, didn't every beat-reporter also say the same thing a year ago? I remember post 2024 draft being legitimately surprised it wasn't Drake Maye but instead JJ McCarthy. Beat-reporters said they thought there was a gap in evaluations after JJ McCarthy and then Maye was lumped in with Penix and Nix. It's been over a year since I heard about this, so maybe I'm not quite remembering right, but I do remember being really surprised by that.

My own QB evaluations had both Daniels&Maye a step above Williams, with a slight preference towards Maye but in the 1A to 1B thing. I wonder how much of that was just the negative narratives around Maye, and then me watching Caleb Williams tape and thinking that Maye negative narrative fit Caleb so much better. So maybe I inflated Maye because I felt he had been mis-identified with things the consensus #1 did way worse?

It’s a lot for a 7th rounder, especially with so much rb talent (let alone other positions) getting drafted. I don’t wanna read too much into one game (the Giants just may be that bad, or a poor match against us), so I’m going to assume he’s a real long shot at this point.

Of course, there are also a lot of surrounding reasons to lean towards him having a really good year.
1. A talented, versatile offense
2. A defense that looks far better
3. An oline with potential to be really good as the season progresses (youngsters improving, the line gelling, and Cosmi returning)
4. A qb that’s a big time threat to run
5. He just offers more juice than our other guys. Ekler’s touches need to be limited and McNichols and Rodriguez don’t offer the explosiveness/speed/wiggle that JCM does.

I don’t wanna read to much into one game though, and I’m guessing he needs to prove himself in pass pro and as a receiver to earn more PT.

I recall that his tendencies were worked on this offseason. We’ll see how it pans out, but the awareness is there and at least some prep has gone into it.

Yeah I said doubled on "what others have said." That is, the stuff that came out last year. I just don't recall Grant in that mix last year. that's the first I recall him weighing in on it. that's why I expressed it that way.

I think it was Keim who said it first. Daniels then McCarthy. then it was either him or someone else said it was close between Drake and Caleb for #3.

As for me personally, I never studied Caleb. i kept him at #1 by default but not from watching him.

I fluctuated back and forth between Daniels and Maye. I started very early with Daniels and pushed him during the college season and said I'd take him over Maye. Then I watched a lot of Maye, and slightly preferred him. But yeah I was close on both, torn.

I sort of became the defacto Daniels guy on ES when that NFLchick disappeared. There were a lot of critics of Daniels and people on the QB thread by a mile preferred Maye. So lol to bring some balance I became like a Daniels propaganda machine in the last two weeks before the draft.
