Given that Whitt (and Quinn) seem to prioritize pass rush and turnovers over run D, my sense is that they’re more interested in penetration by the dline to pick up the occasional TFL/run stuff to put teams behind the chains.
I could be way off base on that, but to your point, the acquisition of Newton and Kinlaw (and Wise, I believe) seem to support this, as does (arguably) cutting Ferrell. I kind of approve of the high risk/high reward philosophy, though when it doesn’t work it’ll looks ugly, and even if it does work, it’ll likely be frustrating when teams are having pretty consistent success against us w/ their ground games.
An interesting add on to this (IMO) is that we actually had a lot of success against Barkley for long stretches, and at times we seemed to put a heavier focus on keeping certain qbs in the pocket, so it seems there’s a willingness to situationally switch up this philosophy?
