2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

Not in the least worried about the secondary, I think pash rush will be good, may not have the elite pass rushers but I think we can scheme it up well. Being able to stop the run though worries me. Stop the run and I think everything else will fall into place. Second and 8s cures many ill's as opposed to last years 2nd and 2s.
 
In today's NFL the free safety is more important to your defense. His impact is much higher as a centerfielder and playmaker down the field.

If Quan Martin continues to develop and balls out like most expect, that together with the improvement at cornerback from the same time last year (near 100% IMO) - the secondary is going to be fine.

Jeremy Chinn is not Ken Houston or Ed Reed. There has been some kind of cult aura surrounding Chinn because he is ripped and looks like a tough guy that he is a 'must have' on defense.

In some regards he reminds me of Laron Landry.

If you notice the team that signed Chinn was the Raiders. Not the Ravens, not the Chiefs, not the Eagles, not the Bills or the Broncos.

In other words the contending playoff teams weren't that moved by him.

Raiders? These guys are starting over as the purported signing of Clelin Ferrell shows.

The blurb from Raiders Nation was that Ferrell could help with the pass rush.

Really? He had 3.5 sacks here in 17 games and 0 in 3 playoff games.

I personally am not worried about Kinlaw. Looking at last season it seems most of the issues were from end around runs more than up the middle, specifically right end and especially D. Fowler. Armstrong held up much better. And part of that I think was him being too focused on sacks and letting himself get out of position.

Wise, I just don’t know, but I think he’s got to be an improvement. And there was talk of using Kinlaw at end in some situations. My concern is less personnel and more coaching. Quinn has a better history with pass defense than run defense and Whitt hasn’t shown yet that he’s the answer at DC. But I’m going to remain optimistic just based on the belief that they are getting better here just like the players.

There’s something special about this team. It’s starting to feel like the old days.

The best run defense is a high scoring offense and we're pushing a ton of weight at the oppositions OL. That's going to wear teams down. I don't think we'll be a great run defense, but our pass D is going to be great.

Evidently Adam Peters knows more about Javon Kinlaw than anyone else because he went after the DT in free agency as if he were Reggie White 😆😆😆

When I saw the contract my first thought was did we have to give him that much because anyone else was going to? 🤔

He didn’t even get a very large contract, definitely more than people were projecting but it feels like the craziness of the contract has grown in the retelling since April. The guaranteed money was more than deserved but isn’t it basically a 2-year deal at mid-level starter money?

Not disagreeing it was an overpay and one of AP’s more puzzling moves, but I think at the time the reaction to a fairly blah contract that won’t have much impact on the future was overblown because people actually thought we were going to go HAM with our huge cap space and sign some stars. So when instead they got Kinlaw early on, the reaction was a little over the top
 
welp there goes our hopes of getting Micah in FA lol. I like that cowboys got crap compensation and the Packers gave a crazy contract.

For me, the one player that can really screw us up is Lattimore. Was his off season rehab / work good enough to keep him healthy ? Can he keep his temper under control when he is on the field ?

It’s a good sign he practiced all through training camp and didn’t spend it needing maintenance on injuries. Much better start for him than when we got him last year
 
Have no idea about the defense. We haven't seen the full starting defense play one snap yet. They could be the same as last year,in the tank or play surprisingly well.
I wonder if Wagner can hold up another year?
Is Lattimore legit or washed? Is he a head case?
Amos looks promising on paper but we haven't really seen him play yet.
Where's our pass rush coming from? Can Von Miller still play or does he need a Rascal to get around?

We won't know a whole lot until October.

Time will tell. But Quinn's program seemed to be very good at keeping veterans on the field and contributing at a high level last year, see Wagner and Ertz. Ertz had spent much of the last several years basically parked in the infirmary.

So, there is some reasonable evidence Lattimore could benefit from a full off-season to get healthy and fully rehabbed, and then Quinn managing his load and doing whatever they do, he could stay healthy.
 
our linebackers and secondary will be elevated, even if the line takes a small step back. we'll be better on defense. although, our schedule is harder this year.

I agree for the most part. Though we saw a lot of the defense play a really good Bengals offense and play pretty well all things considered. It wasn't for long, but it was something.

I said a bit ago in some thread, I think when talking about Witt, that I have literally no opinion on Witt and I can't predict what the defense will be. Too many moving parts, different parts from last year. And last year's defense was REALLY lacking at talent in certain spots. They tried different things, including using 5DL, 3-4 look, nickel, blitz, don't blitz, press, don't press, they tried a little bit of everything to see if they could find something which worked. But when you have Forbes and St. Juste as your starting CBs, you need Reggie White and Dwight Freeney in their primes to make anything out of that, and we didn't have anything close to that.

So, I find it hard to judge Witt from last year or predict anything for this year.

We'll know more after about a month.

I don't think the line is going to take a step back. I think they're going to be better overall, specifically, I think they're going to be harder to move off the spot in the run game.

I also think there might be some addition by subtraction by moving on from Allen. And I don't really mean that as a shot at Allen. I liked him as a player and God knows he went through the shit. But they needed to break up the Payne/Allen combo, and by taking that position and rotating some different guys through, I think they might end up in a better spot.

And with any luck, Payne emerges now that he's, at least by name and draft status, the best of that group.

There's no way Micah was going to be allowed to leave Dallas as a FA. The best case scenario for us would have been if he was willing to play on his deal, get franchised twice, then hit FA.

But that would be giving up $30m+ of income he would never get back. So he wasn't gong to do that.

I think so too, but I was saying IF the line takes a step back. never underestimate Payday Payne.
