The All Things Terry Thread

This shit has to come to an end. It's been going on for too long.

Give a final offer with a week deadline. Take it or leave TMac

I saw a few of the routes that he ran and he was getting open. Not sure why he doesn't get the ball, so that's something to be concerned about. But it doesn't seem to purely be an issue of getting separation.
We saw that last year too. My best guess is that he is a decoy / 2nd or 3rd read, or that JD5 doesnt trust him.

In his defense, it took JD5 a few games to fully trust TMC. IIRC, Terry had to tell him, just gimme the damn ball. The success of which, has led to us to our current holdout situation.

Why would we trade for a receiver coming off an ACL, still unready to play, and give up extra picks to do so?

Right now, I wouldn't even trade Terry for Aiuk straight up. The 49ers would have to sweeten the pot.
We'll take Danny Noonan Ricky Pearsall.

I wonder if AP is considering suspending him.

I think Terry’s agent is mistaken in believing that Peters thinks Washington can’t win without his client.
We are a better team with him than without him that’s for sure. But I think Daniels is a QB who will make receivers better - or at least produce better.

Ultimately Terry will play here this season. But it might be his last if he won’t climb down from what he seems to be asking for. And right now is probably the time his value is the highest - a year older won’t make him worth more this time next year.

The offer on the table for him is likely the best he will see.

The Terry McLaurin contract situation is definitely annoying, but I don't think it's a crisis. He's under contract and is going to play for us this season. If the team and Terry work out an extension, that’s great. If not, Washington still has control for another year via the franchise tag. Bottom line: we have Terry for the next two seasons, minimum.

Don’t let the slow drip of negative news take your eye off the big picture—the franchise is in a solid position either way. And don’t let it change how you view Terry. He’s been a team captain, a model professional, and one of the most consistent players we’ve had in years. He’s still one of my favorite guys on the roster.

The time has come to nip this in the bud.

That foot is AP. We need him to meet with Terry and tell him his agent is an idiot and he is actually going to make him make less money. Buddy Baker is probably hoping for a winless start to the season to improve his position and payday. That really is his last card to play. Hope for. At that point, Terry will be out of favor with fans. It's a distraction we don't need. The nobody Baker could derail our season.

It will be telling of AP's stance if he brings in a vet. I'll happily take Amari Cooper.

If other players, especially a leader like Reaves, are putting shots across Terry's bow on social media...seems like team opinion in the locker room might be turning against 17.

For a team hoping to compete for a championship, you need everybody pulling in the same direction, and winning needs to be the absolute #1 priority for every man in that locker room - no questions asked. McLaurin would play for anybody willing to pay him right now, despite what he might have previously said publicly. Yes, his talent would certainly help us, but I feel like a disgruntled player whose motives and objectives do not align with the rest of the group is just as big a detriment towards the overall goal of the team right now. I can’t believe I am saying this, but I am just about done with him.

Totally understand the frustration, but I think we need to zoom out a bit. Terry is going to be a Commander this year, and most likely next year too (either through a new deal or the franchise tag). He’s under contract, and he’s always been a model professional—nothing in his six years here suggests he’s the kind of guy who would mail it in or become a distraction.

If he gets an extension, awesome. If not, we still have one of the most reliable WRs in the league playing for us this season. That’s a win either way. In fact, just by the number, Washington is probably better off not giving him a contract extension in the 28 million dollar range. Last year he was worth 28 million but its a situation where the odds (lets say 70% chance) are that he won't be worth 28 million for the 2027 season and like an 85% chance he won't be worth it in 2028. But this year he'll definitely be worth his contract and next year there is a better than 50% chance he'll like be worth 28 million franchise tag. You lose a little cap flexibility if he doesn't get an extension for this year and next but if you look at the 5 year picture I think the better argument is we are better off if he doesn't get an extension. I would still give him an extension with guaranteed money for 2026 and 2027 just because he is the leader of the team and he has earned some loyalty. But he needs to be realistic too---the team has all the leverage as they are probably better off just having him playing out this year and franchising him next year.

This is part of the business side of the NFL, and it doesn’t change the fact that Terry has always given everything he has on the field. I think we’ll see that again in 2025. Let’s not let contract drama cloud the bigger picture: Terry is most likely going to be a Commander for at minimum the next two seasons. This contract stuff---is just drama. His teammates are not upset with him---they understand its business. As long as he comes to practice next week with the intent to put in some serious work which seems very likely, none of this matters at all. Its making a mountain out of a molehill.

That's interesting because guys usually stay out of each others contract stuff but I like that Reaves came forward. I mean he is hurting (distraction/building on last year, etc) his teammates too but maybe he doesn't care. Who knows.

Terry should internalize his teammate’s wise words (unrelated, I’m sure)…maximize your opportunity, but you gotta let go of the fact that it’s “not fair” you came out 3 years older than DK Metcalf in the same draft class.

My 11 year old daughter's favorite phrase in the world is "It's not fair!" She thinks her little brother gets everything and she gets nothing. (She's wrong, but that's a different story.)

I just tell her "life's not fair and then you die." Which might not earn me dad of the year votes, but it's the truth.

From a purely business perspective, a few months ago we were looking to cut significant cost out of our business, and were approaching our vendors about reducing their fees to us, and we had some reasons for doing so.

One particular vendor, for our financial system and some other products, we really wanted to save a chunk of money. However, we have a contract with them, and we can't very well change financial systems, so we kindof have to pay them.

Before the conversation with them, I sat down with our CFO and procurement team, and we openly discussed that we had just about no leverage whatso ever. The leverage we did have is we are a large customer and generally speaking, you want to keep your customers happy. But that was it. They had the contract and we had to renew the licenses because a multi-billion dollar company can't switch financial systems in 3 weeks. So we had to pay them, they knew it, they had the contract, and that was that.

So our understanding of our position altered how we approached the conversation. We made the ask, they countered with something which was somewhat reasonable, though not what we ideally wanted, and we agreed and moved on. Could we have tried to negotiate for more? Maybe. Would it have worked? Probably not.

The key part of that negotiation was us understanding our position. If he had overplayed our hand, everything we did would have been a complete bluff, and they could have called us on it.

I think that self awareness from Terry's camp is missing here. There's no reason you can't negotiate from a position of weakness, sometimes you have no choice. But if you don't recognize your negotiating position, you're going to be in trouble.

I think Terry & his agent know full well a trade is not going to happen unless a team offers a haul and from some of the reports of what GM's around the league value him at (as far as a contract) he wouldn't be happy with those numbers either, so worst case scenario for him is they table negotiations or at least convert the negotiations to background noise and Terry honors the contract he is still currently signed to and hopefully something is still worked out that both sides can be happy with. If not, then the season will play out as it is, and Terry either walks, is resigned, or franchise tagged next offseason.

Regardless, Quinn made it clear today in his presser that he is healthy, so the team basically removed any excuse for Terry not to be out there preparing with the team.

Couldn’t he just be referring to the cutdown and the guys about to get released?

I would trade Terry + more for Thomas Jr but no way Jacksonville bites on that

If we do trade, the Bears would be a great trading partner for Odunze or, more realistically, DJ Moore. DJ has played with a lot of scrub QBs and would go off here playing with Jayden. If we take our homer glasses ofd, DJ and Terry are in a similar tier except DJ is 28 and Terry is 30

Terry is not worth much in trade because of the contract ask and likely balking at reporting to new team without a fresh deal at 30.

Who is going pay Terry $34M AAV over the next 3-4 years?

If he does sit out the opener and looks to be a season distraction I would consider trading for or signing a veteran receiver as insurance to go with Deebo until Lane or another younger WR steps up.

There aint no way I would send Terry + a third round pick for a WR coming off of a torn ACL. Straight up? I'd hear you out. If Aiyuk wasn't coming off an ACL? Ok, maybe. But I wouldn't send anything other than Terry on a Soutwest flight to SF.

Adam Peters wouldn't do that trade either. LOL

This is the line to me that always has stood out. TMs camp does not seem to realize that this is the line in the sand for not only our team but for other organizations. There is no getting around that, the fact that no one (that we know of) has come forward willing to pay that number should be a huge red flag to TM and his contract demands. TM is a very good receiver, Im sure a lot of teams would love to have him on their roster, but the asking price even before we even starting talking picks/players in compensation is a non starter.

Terry's actions have had a negative impact on so many fans, easily seen through this thread.

Imagine how not only AP but DQ must feel. He wants everyone associated with the team to move through all things Commanders in harmony, one big happy family. His frustration level must be at an extreme level. It will be interesting how that plays out in the coming week(s).

The same with the way teammates will feel about TM, especially if this holdout moves in and affects the regular season.
