The All Things Terry Thread

Do we need Terry, sure but we're not going to get strong armed into a bullshit contract because of the "come on and just pay him" crowd.

I would be losing patience if I was AP. If Terry doesn't start practicing soon just pull the deal and tell him to play out the contract. Let's see how excited he is about entering free agency at 31.

Chris Russel brought up the point that maybe the decision for Terry to not be there was from the Commanders organization. Maybe they didn't want him there because then there would be all of these shots of him on the sideline, fans cheering him on, etc, and that it would potentially make the organization look bad. I thought it was an interesting take, and it's true that none of us know why he wasn't there. We're all just speculating.

Grant who was at the stadium, if I heard him right said he asked people from the team at the stadium last night about Terry not being there, and they told him yeah its not good -- as to the context of Terry not coming to the game.

Grant and Danny speculated (but don't know for sure) that Terry didn't want to go to the game to make a statement about being upset about bring taking off Pup. If so, i gather the team wanted to give him some breathing room to cool off.

Who knows? But for those covering this story, I don't get the sense that Terry and Terry's agent are backing off even a little. Feels like a stalemate.

The problem is what's Terry's next move? He can't lose a million a week for skipping games. Is he that angry that he tries the approach if lets see if he can try to kill their season and that makes Peters give in? I am thinking no way. But Terry and his agent have been so stubborn, selfish and arguably stupid that i am not ruling out they double down on the selfish-stupid approach.
 
I'm over McLaurin. I really don't care if he ever plays another down. Sit out and make your ego statement and lose a fortune if that's what you're about.

Bottom line... you signed the contract. You don't like it? Play it out and go elsewhere.

Isn't this interesting because wasn't it Russini who appeared to be the mouthpiece of the Terry camp? She seemed like she was getting her information from the agent, now it seems like she's getting information elsewhere.

I might be wrong, but I swear even Galdi said it seemed like Schefter was getting info from Peters, and Rossini was getting information from Terry's camp.

But her last 2 reports on the situation have not been all that kind to Terry.

I have some, and by some, let me emphasize a VERY LITTLE BIT, of sympathy for his situation. Only because he can't actually go anywhere else for the next 3 years if the team doesn't want him to. So his employer has complete control of his employment situation even after his contract is up. And that's, eh, not ideal.

Now, the reason why I have very little sympathy is because that means he probably makes about $70m with this year 's comp+ 2 franchise tags, so if that's the way it works out, then boo hoo cry me a river.

For Terry, the absolute worst case scenario which could possibly play out is he plays this year and makes ~$18m in salary and bonuses. Then his left leg falls off, and he can never play again. That would be terrible but he will have earned ~$70m in his career, so again, that would be awful and I'd feel bad for him but I'm not going to lose sleep over his financial situation.
 
I have brought up the leverage of the franchise tag a lot myself. But I'm starting to seriously doubt the team is going to pay $28 million (or whatever it will be) next year to keep him around. I really think the smartest play for him is to play his best in 2025 and then plan for free agency. His handling of this whole thing has made the team using the franchise tag once or twice on him super likely imho.

Russini seems to be talking to both sides, but she doesn't come off anymore plugged in than any of the national reporters. But she did ask around (like Keim among others also did) about how other FOs feel about Terry -- and none of that ends well for Terry because the league doesn't see him as as good as name that elite WR, the league seems to believe in the data that shows 30 something Wrs drop off in production, the league seems to believe that the 27-28 million mark that this team seems to be willing to pay is a fair salary for Terry.

The only group that seems to back Terry are some in the national media, especially ex-players who say pay Terry whatever he demands.

Rapoport was pretty early on the Terry wants north of 30 million. Schefter has been on that he wants more than Metcalf.

Fowler I think has been the most pro Terry side and its clear his source is Terry's agent.

Some sarcasm here but I mean it too --the only reason why I can have some sympathy for Terry is he clearly doesn't want to be stuck anywhere he can't leverage the most money he can get.

He comes across that he'd play in the CFL if he can get 30 million a year. Winning a SB or anything is gravy and comes far below maximizing his contract. He's a mercenary and wants to play out his career that way -- and Washington to your point can impede Terry's hired gun approach to his career.
 
I wonder if it's possible he's mismanaged his $$? We have learned over the years that a lot of players have. Mark Brunell went broke while having an incredibly long NFL career. It happens. I might cut him more slack if that were the case. Probably not the case, but you never know...

I’m not a big ESPN guy either, but I have to say SVP is pretty cool. He’s a local guy, a big Washington football fan, and broadcasts from DC, so I like him. He’s good when he covers us, last year he had great interviews with JD and DQ.

If that was the case he'd have even more reason to change agents. If his agent saw him making bad investments and stayed silent....

SVP is one of the last true real TV journalists in the biz. Great interviewer, takes his platform and subject matter seriously. This used to be a requirement to be a sportscaster

Players’ agents aren’t involved in their finances at all traditionally (besides making a cut of their contracts). Usually pro athletes have other management for that (or family which is where it often goes horribly wrong), financial advisors and stuff. An agent in any industry only represents your career interests

Though if he has a bad angent he might have a bad financial advisor.

But really I think it’s more simple: he wants top dollar because that’s what he thinks he’s worth and nobody has either tried or succeeded in convincing him otherwise

I remember Stuart Scott saying something like “you have to really want it and work at it to be in the chair. Because somebody else will.”

Referring to when sports center anchors sat in “the chair”
