Covering the Commanders: Keim and Company Discussion

The worst is when they keep trying to make an analogy that just doesn't work. I listen to GP and Danny, because it's the only thing to listen to in the afternoon, but man is it painful sometimes.
Their self-contradiction is horrendously annoying. Any time they say ANYTHING about the name, I want to reach through the radio, and slap them both--they both were vehemently opposed with the former name saying the "if even one person is offended!" and "right side of history!" pearl-clutching.

I do think Grant runs a decent interview--he lets the guests actually answer the question, which is a pet peeve of mine listening to others, like an unnamed host in the morning that rhymes with Meric Pickle.

I've figured out when I can / can't listen to 106.7.

Right now i'm avoiding it like the plague. The McLaurin coverage is overwhelming, and the callers don't help.

There is never a good time to listen to 106.7.

Or 980.

It’s all toxic stupidity, JP used to be intelligent until BMitch got ahold of him.

The hyperbolic overreaction is unbearable--but it's serving it's purpose: generate fear in the underbelly of the fanbase so they get mad, call in, listen more. There is no dumber portion of fans than those that call into sports radio.

I’m glad I’m not he only one with that opinion of B-Mitch. He will always hold a special place in my heart for what he did on the field, but I just get irritated listening to him with his macho talk sometimes, so I just don’t listen unless there’s a potential for real breaking news. I usually have it que’d up during Free Agency Frenzy and surrounding draft coverage to listen to the ‘professionals.’ It used to be my constant listen to, just get worn out sometimes.

Yeah, at times it’s irrational, borderline ESPN screaming show level of topic fishing.

BMitch is awful. He’s not as bad as Doc. But he’s terrible.

lol I kind of like Doc. He can be a little over the top animated, but he’s like the fun Uncle in that sense.
He’s the absolute worst. He makes my ears bleed. Joe Gibbs in his second retirement speach said it best: “Shut up Doc. And go hit the nose.”

"they all seem like game show hosts to me"......

(thanks Sting, the world needed that line pretty badly - seems to be relevant with this too)

To pick up here your comment about Keim just guessing about Terry, not different than any fan, etc.

Keim is by a mile the most plugged in dude about the team, and he's proven that to death from regime to regime. Heck he's done some private zooms over the years for fans and he's explained how to interpret his podcasts as to what he knows and what he doesn't know.

Keim even hinting things on podcasts have meaning typically. As an example, I noticed when talking about the pass rushers they can sign this off season, he put special emphasis on Von Miller. While some fans here were clamoring for Z. Smith, I got the vibe from Keim that its Von to watch out for, and yeah naturally it happened. And yes I posted about it in real time when I noticed Keim has Von on his radar some.

Heck in Ron's last year, Keim commented on what position they were targeting in each round in the draft. It actually went down to a tee like that and it was the kicker on why I bailed on Ron -- Ron was that locked into picking to need versus PBA, wild, and it turned me off, let alone not loving the picks.

Going way back, Cooley used to joke that Keim is never wrong because he gets 7 sources to back every point.

lol, as Voice_of_Reason among others know over the years, I am a media geek. I follow these guys really closely, listen to almost every podcast, etc. There is only one dude who covers the team, I trust, Keim, who is right abut 95% of the time. Sheehan oddly is right more often too when he has a nugget but he rarely does. Standig had a spell under Gruden's era where he had some inside info but it didn't hold.

Keim is as good as it gets as to knowing what's going on with the team. When he guesses, he tells you he's guessing. But when he tells you multiple times the team is willing to go to 28 million, I'd say that's a lock that he heard it from a good source with the team. When he says the Terry side is more stubborn right now, I'd say that's a lock, too.

Now as Keim himself will say, what's true now doesn't mean its true tomorrow. So things can shift. But when Keim repeats something like that twice. He's not guessing like a fan. I've followed him enough to be absolutely sure of that he's heard from a really good source.

Keim has been questioned in a fun way from other reporters about why-how he's so good at getting information about this team and being so accurate. And his reponse has been its more important for him to be right than he is to be the first to say something.

Some on ES thought he finally lost his touch when Peters-Quinn took over when he was saying things they didn't agree with or didn't want to happen including him saying he knows this FO prefers Daniels over Maye before the draft among other things. He was right about everything.

I probably could have stated my view of Keim better. I base my comments on being up close and personal with him when covering the team. I think he’s a good guy and he would be on my top 4 list along with Galdi, Bram, and Sheehan.

I think he is a very vanilla guy and his style was better suited for written articles than what’s required nowadays with social media and podcasts, but he does a good job. I am not questioning how plugged in he is. I am questioning the idea that he gets inside information - because I just don’t believe that’s the case. He is at the park constantly and so yes, the conclusions he makes are going to be as fact-based as is humanly possible. What I’ve seen though is that the team doesn’t use ANY of the local coverage guys to break news.

As for being right most of the time, one benefit he has over guys like JP Finlay is that he is very cautious in what he reports (you did a good job describing that). Being very cautious helps him avoid making guesses that are less likely to be true.

I like Keim. He’s good at what he does. I don’t think he’s particularly savvy on the X’s and O’s stuff like someone such as Logan Paulsen - but to be fair, I’m not sure one should expect someone who hasn’t played or coached NFL football to be super savvy interpreting what they are seeing.

On McLaurin, the conservative guess (no matter who is making it) is that a deal will get done because as Galdi says there are too many reasons it needs to get done. It will be for significantly less than what TM is rumored to be seeking but will probably have some things thrown in to help him save face.

I just want to say I can't see a post from Rossini and not think of the rumors of her and GMSM (General Manager Scot McCloughan) which were tweeted about by his wife, and her being his side girl. I know that's really bad. I should let this go. I don't even know if it's true, and it's entirely possible she was the victim of a malicious, untrue attack. And I'm not judging her one way or the other. It's just that the story pops into my head every time I see a tweet from her.

Not that it matters in her reporting. I never thought she was a particularly good reporter, regardless of the accusations. She gets stuff wrong from time to time, I don't find her that insightful, and she just generally is not my favorite. And that has NOTHING to do with the scandal from years ago. That's more objective based on her reporting over the past however many years.

If you need a refresher on the scandal and the positions all teams took, here is a good summary:

Keim yeah definitely isn't an entertainer as a talker like a Sheehan, Finlay, etc. I agree with that. And yeah even though he was one of the first who did the x's and o's. He did it back for the Examiner and years before Cooley and others did it for this team -- its not his wheel house. He's better at it than the standard reporter but he's not a professional X's and O's guy. He doesn't tout himself as that either. And doesn't really do it that often anymore unlike what he did when he was younger.

Having listened to him forever and read his stuff too going back to the Examiner, then on twitter, ESPN, etc -- he definitely I would say give or take in the last 10 years became incredible as to knowing inside info. He's very careful though as to how he shares it. He doesn't put it up on a Billboard like some national reporters do. But if you follow him closely enough, you get a sense of how he does it. For example, I just listened to his podcast and listened to him on the Junkies and listened to him on Logan's podcast. And you can find commonalities in doing that.

Not saying you and others aren't doing the same. But I don't know. But I do trust my instincts on Keim because its easy for me to track how often he's been right. And his fellow reporters do acknowledge Keim's prowess as an insider.

I agree with your point about him piecing things together at times and making logical deductions that way. But he goes well beyond that, he flat out says this is what he's hearing from the team about this or that, and is almost never wrong. Sometimes he's more blunt, sometimes less so.

I did a zoom with him years back, he offered to do that for people who follow him on twitter where he shared that when he says in his articles and on podcasts, the team is interested probably in a player like this guy. Assuming that whatever hypothetical player he's referring to, they are actually interested in. But he doesn't want to be that forward at times so he can protect his sources. So when he went for examples years back this team is interested in a RB in the style of Antonio Gibson. lol, it meant they actually like Antonio Gibson.

That's why for example it wasn't hard for me to pick up on the Von Miller stuff. Weeks before they signed him. When he would talk pass rushers, he spent extra time on him and as I posted here at the time, I am taking that as Keim saying watch out for them to be signing Von.

When Dan Quinn wasn't a popular choice with some fans as a choice for HC, he warned that this FO really really likes him. When some national reporters said count on Ben Johnson coming here, he said hold the breaks on that. He subtly mentioned the Ben Johnson interview didn't go completely hot before it became a national story. When fans were clamoring for Drake Maye, Keim was very sold that this team was more into Daniels -- and did so well before the national reporters kicked in.

On and on and on. He is not a break stories with his inside info type because I gather that would damage him with his sources. But if you follow him closely on twitter or his podcasts, I get more inside info from him by a mile than anyone who covers this team. It amazes me how much Keim knows and in turn how little other reporters who cover this team know as to inside info.

Great insight. Always liked Keim, but don't have this level of insight into him, so really appreciate you sharing that!

Yes, his personality is very vanilla, and hopefully his content continues to be A+ so he stays around! I like it when guys are judged more on the meat than the dressing, but we know, the culture moves more towards dressing and superficial nonsense.

Keim seems to me to be someone who has carefully developed his sources and is very good at protecting them. He's my top source as well. I too got to zoom with him a few years ago and he's always been very nice to me. We have a bit we do each training camp where he'll post the daily schedule and I'll respond with "Go Get Em Tiger!". He usually will like the comment and/or respond with a gif.

Hmmm, I have to say I never really had a feeling for Craig Hoffman one way or the other. I find him rather bland and ho-hum. Not the best, but nowhere near the worst. But he is the co-host of the podcast with Logan Paulsen, so I wonder what is going to happen there. I wonder if he's going to continue doing the podcast even though he's leaving the radio...

If they are going to continue the Logan podcast and Craig is not going to continue, I really hope they get a good cohost. I don't know if this would work, because he already has his own show, calls the games, and then has a podcast with London Fletcher, but Bram would be my first choice given he and Logan both work for the team.

If it's not Bram, then I really hope they don't select some nimrod from 980 or 106.7 like Chris Russell, Grant or not funny Danny. I think they should pair Logan with somebody with a little more juice, though. He's very insightful but kidnof monotone. Even though I haven't listened to his show in a while, Sheehan probably would be good at it. The guy who would be REALLY good at it would be Michael Phillips. Who I REALLY like and don't get to hear enough of. Insightful, funny, knowledgeable, and has a good radio personality.

I refuse to listen to 980 anymore so I'll check be interested to hear any updates.
