I wholly agree with this--I think the agent is giving Terry awful advice.

If Terry is this easily misled, then I've vastly overestimated him.

That's not to say there's no blame with his numbskull agent, but Terry has a brain, he can use it, and he can make his own decisions. If he fell for some pie-in-the sky song and dance about how he's going to be able to get paid as a top 3 WR at 30 years old, then plenty of that is on him.

Even the Metcalf deal is essentially 2 years 60M. He's going to have to light it up to get the rest.

But he's several years younger and just might do it. There is virtually 0 chance that McLaurin has the same production at 32-33, and his current production isn't top of the league already.

The team probably doesn't want to pay him over 25M a year considering everything. That is still more than Davante Adams just got at the same age Terry will be in a couple years.

There's exactly 1 receiver who's 30 or over and who makes over $25m/year, and that's Tyreek Hill (who was literally ranked the #1 player in the NFL after the 2023 season). The next closest is Calvin Ridley who's 30 and makes ~$23m. I wouldn't be at all surprised if AP is sitting in that ~$25m/year area - which means Terry would be the second highest paid 30+ WR behind Hill.

So that much money actually is elite for his age.

As for the hardball that many are suggesting AP can/should play, it will be interesting to see what direction he goes. There's a lot of psychology and a philosophical direction you can choose here. If you play a lot of hardball, especially with a guy who has a big voice in the locker room, it can cause issues. Of course, Terry's own behavior can certainly cause issues as well.

I would not call it hardball. It's just prudent FO management of an NFL team with SB aspirations. There's a reason the Chiefs have been the juggernaut they have been for years. Yes, Mahomes is the primary reason. But, Brett Veach is another gargantuan one. He has the stones to trade Hill. His front office moves are nearly perfect across the board in every transaction and have been for a long time. He manages his team with logic not emotion.

How many receivers has KC overpaid for in the Mahomes/Veach era?

0. How many SB have they been to? 5 How may have they won? 3

Daniels is not in Mahomes category (at least yet), but he is a player that can go and win the Super Bowl(s). I firmly believe this. He makes this team. Not 1 receiver. KC has displayed this model through and through. We have the 1 guy JD5. This train will roll on with or without Terry. Peters understands to win a SB you cannot overpay 1 guy who isn't worthy of a contract. It will hurt talent on other units which won't work for getting the ring.

Tyreek Hill just played his age 30 season, played every game, and had over 800 yards fewer than in 23. And still almost matched McLaurins yards.

If McLaurin loses almost half his production he's basically Zaccheaus. But he's under contract until before his age 31 season.

Terry was paid a top 5 contract 3 years ago despite production way short of top 5 in catches and yards.

Now his camp from reports says he needs further compensation for the trauma losing had on him?

He looked awfully happy signing that deal.

I think ‘playing hardball’ is an odd way to characterize what the team is likely to do. They don’t have to do anything. McLaurin is under contract (for 2 years if the team elects to tag him). Holding him to a contract he willingly signed and was handsomely compensated for is not hardball, it’s just what businesses logically do.

I think the team is waiting for McLaurin to, for lack of a better term, come down off his high horse and set a reasonable price for a contract extension. If he doesn’t, they’ll let his current contract play out.

He’s not an free agent even if Terry and his agent want to pretend he is.

This how Washington got into this mess in the first place.

They gave Terry a sweetheart deal to thank him in part for being a professional beyond what his numbers warranted 3 years ago and now his agent figures his client is entitled to a Part II addendum to that in 2025.

Unless you are talking about a guy like Jerry Rice that helped you win 2-3 Super Bowls over a 15 year HOF career with team you don’t give out sweetheart deals.

It’s bad business. For future contracts with player and others on the team as well.

What if he refuses to play and ends up being traded for a ham sandwich? Maybe we get a third. Then the desperate team has to sign him to a contract he is never going to earn.

The Browns? With no actual QB on the team? That would be one of the few teams I'd imagine that could possibly be dumb enough.

And at 30 Terry can’t afford to sit out the season, he will never make back the dollars.

Worst case is he sits 7 games and comes in to lock in the league year and have his contract advance, otherwise his deal overlaps into 2026.

Best case is for him to play in 2025 and put up numbers that legitimize top 5 for franchise tag or better trade.

Terry is what he is.

He can say other quarterbacks stunted his numbers but last year with Jayden he ended with 82 catches and 1096 yards.

That’s far short of the 100 catch, 1500 yard seasons the big boys are putting up now.

At the end of the day his 65-69 yards a game are replaceable on offense.

Agree with all of this. I have loved Terry, but at this point I am hoping that we just have him play out this year and either let him go next year or tag him and then be done. I am a fan of this team, that always comes first and he has been well compensated. This idea that he needs to be paid for what he had to deal with under the last regime who already paid him is outlandish. At this point, his choice is to finish out his contract at a reasonable price and be beloved here forever or trash it all.

If he sits the first 7 games then we don’t have to pay him for those and he would be back for the last 10 and the playoffs. Including both Philly games. Even if we lost an extra game I still expect playoffs this year.

At this point I’m just waiting for him to wake up. The bluff didn’t work, although I don’t blame him for trying.

If this drags out to the end of camp it will be interesting to see which WRs don't make the final 53 across the league and who if any we bring in.
