Cant happen if he has a year left on his contract though.
If we cut him we get no comp.pick.

Only way would be if he played out the two years remaining and walked as a free agent.

Void years don't figure into that, I don't think. We're not cutting him, he's a UFA after this year.

I could certainly be wrong, im no expert.

I assumed any termination of contract would nullify it.

Now im curious as to how that works.
 
Void years are essentially a cap manipulation technique to spread out the cap hit. He has no actual salary that year.

I heard that from Keim and went and looked up the numbers, and then thought he was wrong. I know, it's sacrilege to disagree with the almighty John Keim, but I think he's just factually not correct on this one.

Payne's cap number for this year is $26M. His cap number for next year is $28M.

He is going to be in the same situation as Terry is in during the 2026 off-season: under contract for 2026, but at a number which the team can pay. Evidence by the fact they are paying essentially the same this year.

Now, does Payne have a ton to play for? ABSOLUTELY. Because he wants to be in a position next off-season to negotiate an extension. Or, if released, get a new contract. But that's basically every player for every year. He's not in a contract year. Because the team could EASILY just let him ride out his contract. It wouldn't be that big a cap hit increase from this year especially since the cap will increase, it's possible his percentage of cap will decrease, and it's an $11m dead cap hit to release him. Could they? Sure. But they absolutely don't have to.

So, I think it's apples to oranges.

The dead cap to release him is 11 million in 2026 to keep him he's 28 million on the cap. Sprotac gives the year to bail out of a contract if a team so chooses as to financial viability of doing so on the player -- for Payne likewise they give the exit in 2026 to bail on the contract if the team chooses to do so.

It's not just Keim who talks about it. It's about as common a talking point as anything with just about everyone who covers the team as to Payne.

As for whether the team can pay 28 million? Sure. But its ridiculous to pay that for a good -- not great DT. Everyone that I can recall covers the team feels it would be shocking if they just rode out Daron's contract. So the apples to apples with Terry according to anyone I can recall covering the team is non-existent. They feel (as I do) the team of course would happily pay Terry's contract this year. They have no choice but to pay Payne what he's owed this year. But next year they got a choice. And Payne the way he's playing is barely an 8 million dollar a year DT, let alone 28 million a year.

With the Payne, the talking point is he's defacto in his last year because no way they are paying him 28 million and like Jonathan Allen this year, they can get out of the contract next off season.

Which they will probably end up taking and giving to Tunsil.
 
Talk here in Buffalo is that the Bills might be interested since Shakir went down wuth a high ankle sprain. Rumour is Curtis Samuel and a 5th for Terry. Sounds like wishful thinking by Bills fans.
 
With Payne.. i like the strategy. They are basically saying.. "we know you can play better and you usually do when there is a contract on the line" Both Payne and the team know this is his last year here so he is essentially playing for his next contract w another team. This is one of the reasons the team went DT heavy in FAs and draft over the last couple of years, planning for Allen and Payne departure.
If all works out, Payne plays really well and could possibly be traded vs released, but even if he plays just ok the team will still get a comp pick. Either way they have enough pieces to replace them without loosing a beat.

That might be the single dumbest trade idea I've read for Terry...
 
IMO, Terry is in the wrong here, and that bums me out.

He's under contract (I know you all know this).

He's only hurting the team by not being a full participant in training camp.

Wanting to renegotiate your contract (which I'm not a fan of, but it's where we are) and participating in preparation for the upcoming season do not need to be exclusive of each other. Both can occur at the same time.

Heck, if you really love and care for the organization that you say you want to stay with, then get your butt on the field. Prepare for the season. The FO is aware that you want a new deal, and while they are under no obligation to do that, if they see you are serious about performing, they may be more inclined to listen.

My kid looked up to Terry for years. Now I keep having to explain to him why he's holding out.

Terry has built up so much good will with the fanbase over the years, it's a shame to watch it being torn down because he is selfish.

Side note: Even if he wants to be traded, who has the cap space to take on a +$30M player at this point?
