The All Things Terry Thread

Agree w/ SIP.

Not that he cares, but no matter what happens with his contract - he’s just another dude to me now. It’s way too important of a time for everyone involved to be so me-me-me. At no time has he even pretended to care about how his contract impacts the team overall. He’s not even putting sweet nothings into the atmosphere about wanting to get a deal done that works for everyone. He’s made it very clearly all about him and the only smidge of leverage he has is his availability or lack thereof to us for the upcoming season.

Not to keep harping on Tampa, but I've seen now 3 players talk about how their contracts effects others and they really really love playing in Tampa and really really want to win there. That's part of the culture. All for one. One for all. I am sure every Tampa player doesn't do the same. But it says something when among their three top players, act this way.

Terry I think would go to the CFL if a team there offered him more money. And again, many players will do the same. And I don't hate on players for that mindset -- but I am done with the Terry is just a different kind of leader rhetoric -- in my book its cool that he's not a diva in the locker room and is a nice guy in general but as a player he's not only as mercenary as any other player -- he's actually comes off if anything a bit more mercenary than the average player.

Hard to argue anything there SIP, I’ll respond with:

A. As I mentioned in a previous post, I can see where he may feel duped (betrayed is a little harsh) as the front office has talked up an extension and his value, but there’s a gross misalignment between the 2 (from his view).

B. Holdouts don’t bother me one way or the other, part of the business.

C. I’m with you here. Considering he’s a team captain and vocal leader, I’d like him to be less “me” as well.

He or Bobby typically get the guys together pre-game, and the offense goes thru him, so I too want that guy to be team first. But he most likely will still carry his leadership mantle inside the locker room if re-signed. The guys’ll still love him, he’s a dawg!

I think we’re just surprised to see that Terry is indeed a diva wide receiver. The mentality that makes him fight for his contract by aggressive means is how he plays the game. Making big plays on the biggest stages hatched that diva sized ego last year!

Most of those guys that play that way are a little nuts in the noggin. Guess you gotta be to go across the middle in the league or want the matchup v. best corners on earth!

Some good points. I go agree that high-strung emotional Terry in contract negotiations -- that personality likely serves him on the field.

And I do agree in the locker room, he's a 10 out of 10. Don't think that will change. He's 10 out fo 10 with fans, too. There is a lot to like there still.

The whole thing about Terry feeling betrayed by the FO. He's a smart guy. He knows its not just Washington that obsesses over the age issue. He wants them to just ignore it. But he should get that its self-serving for him to just say that and for them to follow him on it. That's my way of saying unless Terry is dense, he should at least see there is a counter argument to his argument on age.

And instead of ignoring Sutton when Sutton goes he took less in part because he wants to win and wants Denver to keep other players -- at least pause and think hey, I am not giving the team a discount, I don't believe in what Sutton is doing, BUT, maybe I should compromise and work out a deal. Lets meet in the middle. And even if I think I got less, there is some upside to keeping some of my teammates so we can win a SB.

I honestly had the personal "core" Redskins WR category in my head as all three members of the Posse, Santana Moss, Charlie Taylor. But the longer this has gone, the more that has changed and it saddens me. I still want him signed on reasonable deal, but I don't think I will ever quite regard him the same.

Some talking heads from ESPN.

Some within the national media, are annoying on the Terry issue.

1. I think Terry is playing no matter what. So the idea of Terry plays or doesn't play this season like this is a binary decision one way or another -- feels like a false premise laid out by some within the national media.

2. The idea of just pay Terry whatever he wants which is explained more simplistically by most as just pay him, he's earned, it, etc. Beyond silly and simplistic, too. It's like hey whatever you purchase in life -- just pay whatever the heck the store is asking for. It all happens in a vacuum. If the Nike store wants $1000 for that pair of sneakers, just pay it because that's apparently how life works.

What else are they going to scream about? Positive decision making?

He says weve been a dumpster fire but doesn't talk about the crap personnel decisions that made us one. If we signed Terry to a DK Metcalf deal they would be asking "Is McLaurin worth XXXX"

I just posted the video brother. I’m just the messenger…😝

Absolutely. I know.

I am just commenting on the video, I don't associate it with you, I know you didn't make the comments.

But yeah stuff like that is wild. Orlovsky says this is one of the dumbest things he's seen as to the Terry negotiations. Orlovsky's comments are some of the dumbest I've seen -- its not the organization who looks dumb IMO -- he's the one who looks dumb.

His points again -- does Terry play or not play (wrong), this team is trying to take away Terry from the equation this season (wrong), the idea that a negotiation is just something in a vaccum where the dollar ask is irrelevant (wrong).

If you listen to Orlovsky, this is just about whether this team wants Terry or not. Simple as that. So how dumb is this organization for not wanting Terry. Yeah by that premise it would be dumb. But in the real world, a negotiation isn't about one party setting the price, and its over, the other party has to pay that price.

It's like me deciding my house is worth 5 million dollars. Because hey that's how I value it. And how stupid a prospective buyer is to negotiate with me and not take asking price as is considering my home is nicer than their home.

Orlovsky can be an odd duck at times. He among others worshipped Haskins (RIP) as a borderline slam dunk franchise QB. But he got it right with Daniels. He liked him over Caleb. But what was odd about it is he was one of the lets curb your enthusiasm about Jayden throughout the season, saying he's not as good as this QB or that QB -- and in a nice way he more or less was saying people were overrating him. Weird journey for him on Daniels.

Yeah, Orlovsky says that now.

But if Washington were to sign McLaurin to $36M for next season (or whatever he is looking for) and then we are faced with Tunsil potentially holding out or requesting a trade next year because we don't have the cap space to give him what HE wants, then that talking head will be down on the team for not wanting to pay the guy that protects Daniels' blindside :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

These ex-athletes are always going to stand up for the player, regardless of how outrageous the situation is.

I recall ex-players wanting to forgive Antonio Brown and have the Commissioner let him back into the NFL after some pretty heinous charges he faced off the field.

That's the culture of the locker room and it isn't going to change.

All those media types though that are arguing for Josh Harris to meet with McLaurin and his agent and go above Adam Peters' head miss the obvious points.

1. After 30 years of chaos and meddling by the owner, Harris is NOT going to force a deal on Peters and the front office as we have players like Tunsil, Luvu and others that will need new deals in 2026 and by that time they both may be way more important to this team's future than Terry.

2. Jayden Daniels can perform in the NFL without Terry McLaurin. Orlovsky and others would like to make it out that Terry holds Jayden up and without him, Daniels will crumple to the ground under the pressure of the NFL season. A number of folks thought that about the Chiefs offense after Reid traded Tyreek Hill away, or after the Bills jettisoned Stefon Diggs. An excellent quarterback and offensive system can overcome the loss of a single complementary skill player. See how much more difficult it was for Kansas City to overcome the loss of a capable starting left tackle in 2024 than it was getting over Hill and his antics.

I don't think Washington is out to screw Terry. I think Peters will give him more than Sutton got, certainly more in guarantees.

But at the end of the day Peters is not going to give Terry a 5 year contract for $165M with most of it guaranteed so Terry can retire at 36 as if his playing career put him close to or in the HOF.

At this point, all I care about is that we aren't paying a 33 year old WR $35M

Do whatever is necessary to avoid that.

after he signs an extension, a super bowl will heal all wounds

The way I see it is that regardless of whether an extension gets done or not, Terry McLaurin is going to be a Commander this season so I think they should continue with negotiations another two weeks, hopefully an agreement is made, but if not, just shut it down for now and go get prepared for the season that way both sides have at least a couple of weeks to focus on solely on football. It doesn't mean an extension won't happen during the last two week lead up to the season or even during the season, but Terry showing up and practicing and getting ready will at least alleviate that element from the situation.

Dude isn't getting traded unless there is something of value in the trade that helps the team immediately and, in the future, and if you combine that with how much Terry wants annually (allegedly) I don't think there are many teams that would be willing to do all that unless they are currently projected to be a pretty bad team for a couple of seasons and will value his veteran mentoring potential over results in the win column and hope by the time their organization is ready to compete, his contract will be done with anyway.

Whoa, it was Terry McLaurin who engineered several last minute game winning drives as a rookie while being cool as a cucumber and utterly unfazed, regardless of the stakes of the game?

I guess you learn something new every day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(as with SIP, this is not a response to you personally, just to the video)

I know i'm beating a dead horse, so this will be the last time I post in this thread until something contractually significant happens. catching up on all the Micah Parsons stuff, I hope some of the people that have soured on Terry can at least appreciate that he contacted DQ to give him a heads up instead of writing a multi-page, farewell social media post.

I think Terry sucks at negotiating and assessing his own fair market value, but I'm still team Terry even if he's not the perfect player.

Very fair post, though, Terry has been around long enough to know how to properly handle negotiations.

I watched this, she was vague, didn't in the end seem to have any details. One of her points was Terry's side wants a Terry tax for what he's experienced. And Peters doesn't agree that he should be compensated for that.

I don't know if its true or not. But she's not the only one who said Terry's side wants a Terry tax for what he's endured. For me, that's tacky and it diminshes Terry's tenure here if he wants to get paid for being a good guy. Like I said before, its like me helping an old lady cross the street, and then finding her son and asking him to pay me $20 for doing it. If so, how good of guy am I?

This is the other point Russini with Daniels hits on their video podcast

Why not overpay Terry because you can?

To me there are three reasons why not.

1. All the other contracts coming up. Cap space can diminish fast. What if they want to keep Payne, Lattimore, Tunsil, Luvu, Deebo, etc?

2. The precedent it would set for these other contracts. Hey the "leader" Terry demanded more and got it, so why can't our client

3. I just think its tacky for one player to exploit the rookie contract with the idea of pay me more for that reason because you can. Again bad precedent.

I get the rookie QB contract makes it easier for all. But you don't want the leader of the team to extort you for it.

I really hate the Terry Tax angle and hope that’s born out of rumor as opposed to facts.

That an outright egregious ask. New ownership has came in and immediately transformed the entire franchise. The amenities, facilities, stadium, the culture, the QB, and the list goes on. It’s like going from hamburger helper to a wagyu filet and crab cake practically overnight. They have more than paid the “Terry Tax” through their actions. And for all Terry endured while here, he also gained generational wealth via a contract he held out for. The more I type, the more outrageous it sounds and the more I’d like to ship him to Cleveland.

On Keim's new podcast says he doubts that the contract aav starts with a 3. The only way he thinks Terry would get over $30 million is as a non guaranteed third or fourth year that he will not be collecting.
