The All Things Terry Thread

I agree it wasn’t smearing, but—to cite the Godfather doubly—more than a couple fans here reacted like Fredo is dead to me when it wasn’t personal, strictly business.

I don’t see McLaurin much differently than before. He did hold out for his current contract too, we just didn’t get to see his reaction to rejection because the team caved.

At the end of the day, Terry is a guy we would obviously prefer be on the field for us than not. He is making a run at all of our receiving records (won’t catch Monk on a few but can get there with some longevity on others)

But, this is business. And good teams don’t generally live or die on if a receiver who is skill wise in that 10-20 range overall (I’d say closer to 10 than 20… and his leadership gives him a bit more credit).

We are now a good team. Terry isn’t our end all be all. He’s a key cog, as he should be. But he’s not the heartbeat anymore. Good teams don’t have WRs as the heartbeat… because it’s their QB.

That’s not a knock on Terry. I love Terry. I want him to get paid and be on the field. But I want this team to make decisions that build the team, too.

Basically, I’m not stressing either way.

Looking at this list of highest paid, Terry deserves more cash than Aiyuk, Waddle, Moore, Smith, Collins, Deebo and Pittman, imo.

He and Amon Ra St. Brown are very similar in impact. $30.5/year makes some sense, in my non-front office opinion.
I’m just going to use this as a post to jump off and say I hate the AAV metric. It’s almost meaningless. I don’t know when it crept into the consciousness.

To me the only things that matter are giantesses. Guaranteed at signing and then when other moneys get guaranteed.

Thats what matters because just about everything else is funny money. You could easily do a 5 year contract with the first 2 years fully guaranteed with at $20m per year and a $10m signing bjnus, then throw $30+ of non-guaranteed money into years 3-5 to get to a $30m AAV but practically the contact I described was a 2 year contract with a value of $50m

So it’s all about the guaranteed.

I think Terry could get closed to $60m guaranteed, but not all new money. Guarantee this season, add a signing bonus and guarantee next season.

To me that would be good enough.

Totally appreciate all of that. I was mostly responding to your characterization that McLaurin was being ‘smeared’ - because I think McLaurin himself owns whatever fan discontent is being expressed.

I think Washington fans almost universally admire McLaurin and want him to continue to be a part of this journey. His actions are putting that good will at risk, it has nothing to do with the fanbase.
Agreed. “Smeared” was the wrong word to use on my part. He deserves it completely, but still I hate seeing it.

Terry McLaurin would be a Ring of Fame player if he finished his career here. Only Art Monk, Charley Taylor, Santana Moss, and Gary Clark have more catches, and he would soon pass Bobby Mitchell to move into fifth all time in receiving yards. He could well move further up those rankings if he continues to produce his regular 75 catches and 1000 yards for two or three more seasons, which he reliably does until proven otherwise. He also has the chance to run it back with a team that finished one game short of the Super Bowl.

I have always imagined Terry to be a good teammate and great competitor who would care about this legacy, but I now see him as more about the money, so I am disappointed in that, especially considering his refusal to honor his current contract is creating a distraction in camp. I still hope they work out a deal, Terry is a great player and we would be a worse team without him.

Regardless, I look forward to seeing what Deebo, Luke, and Lane bring to the position group this year.

Give him a new contract for the next 4 years.
2025 28M
2026 30M
2027 32M voidable
2028 34M voidable

Total contract value of 124M. 60M guaranteed. With some incentives. Put up or shut up. Final offer.

Otherwise play out your existing contract and we can franchise you.

I mean, Peters knows him but he’s coming off an ACL, right?

I think that might start to feel very Comanthers if we keep signing SF guys.

You missed the context, VoR. That was in response to the following question posed by CuredFromBatteredFanSyndrome , not a suggestion:

‘Are there any examples of a player of Terry’s caliber and leverage, pulling a stunt like this? And did it work out in their favor?’

I think he has already demonstrated he’s not the guy we always thought he was.

And how is he ‘smeared’? He’s smearing himself at this point. I cannot understand any other viewpoint.
demonstrated to some fans with specific criteria for what an ideal, team first player is like. I have a feeling none of this will impact his relationship with coaches or teammates. if he was really showing his true colors, there would've been hints from other players, former teammates, former coaches, or someone talking shit about Terry. bottomline, some in the fanbase can think whatever of Terry now, but all that matters is his reputation with teammates and coaches. I just don't understand the need to try to paint Terry as a complete, selfish piece of shit...yet, in the same breath, want to trade Terry for Parsons or Hendrickson who are basically doing the same thing as Terry. that I cannot understand or square with logically - is it because people think they are elite enough to deal with their selfish, non-team first toxicity?

I'm sure that in the background some of the other receivers who want to make it are looking at Terry holding out as a chance for themselves. Who knows which guy is going to step up with our Franchise QB getting ready to make his move as one of the top 3 QBs in the league.

McLaurin is a good WR who usually catches passes thrown to him but he's not one of those guys who are getting 100+ receptions a year. He's obviously not always open like you see with Jefferson. I watch the Vikings and can't believe how Darnold doesn't even try to get the ball to Jefferson 10+ times a game because he's wide open so often.

Good lord - who said he is a complete selfish piece of shit?

I like McLaurin but I don’t think these have been his best moments. I don’t think it has impacted how he is viewed by players or coaches - yet. That could change if he continues to not show up and football is impacted.

Fans usually side with players. The fact that most view the current situation as mostly of TM’s own making is a little telling.

Yeah playing off of this point the DK Metcalf deal for example from what I've read is defacto a 2 year deal at 30 million a year. the 33 a year is with the addtional year and its unlikely to happen because the guaranteed money runs out.

So there are ways to make it look and feel differently.

From what I've gathered as Schefter said, he likely wants a lot more than DK. I am guessing that means a lot more guaranteed.

As for how I feel about Terry. for me it depends on how it unfolds. If it unfolds and lets say it does end up 28 million a year and he keeps to being a good soldier, I am good with Terry. He'd still be diminshed some in my eyes but not dramatically. If so, I do think Terry is a genunie good person. Good teammate. Good with the fans. But I don't put him in the Mike Evans class among others who are both good teammates and ALSO really really love being a player of their team and want the team to win above else.

I think most (not all) players are like Terry, they'd rather have a million or more in their pocket than win a SB or be with the team they are at. On that front, Terry is disappointing. To me he's not in the top strata anymore of the rare selfless players (relatively speaking) in the league. But if he signs ultimately, and its not for something outrageous, then I am good with him overall.

If this drags out and more drama to come -- then I'll start thinking of Terry much more poorly because he will become an even bigger distraction in a season that is supposed to be about chasing a SB.

I think, as a fan, there is always going to be an emotional reaction to a player saying, "Trade me!"

That's a break up song. That's saying they want a divorse. Now, even if it's said in anger and counseling gets you through it... the sting and memory lingers. Once that door has been opened, as a fan, it never entirely shuts. After all, they were willing to make the threat to walk away. They didn't love us enough to try to work it out. After he signs, if he signs, we will all forgive him and cheer for him, probably just as loudly as we did before, but in a subtle way the relationship has changed because he admitted he's okay with not being one of us.

And as unfair as it is to the player, I think it matters (to me as a fan) that Terry's already set for life. So him saying, I see the blue skies ahead for the team and the chance to do something amazing, but I want out because I can't wring top three positional money out of the team just feels wrong.

If this were the 1980's and a player was wrestling over getting 100k a year and 260k a year, I'd feel different because even back then no one felt that they could live their entire life off that 100K. Terry has made over 50 million dollars with the team. He's going to make 15m this year. If I had to guess, I'd predict that almost no one on the board has the net worth of what he is making this year. So, him crying about money is never going to feel right. Whether its 25m or 35m per year both are absurd amounts. Both will set not only him, but his family and his children up for life. He will never (unless he is robbed or stupid) ever have a financial care in his life.

So saying "I want out because I havent' been fairly compensated. They aren't respecting me." feels just out of touch with reality. He could donate half the salary he's unhappy with this year and still live like a king.

Get your money Terry. Get what you can get. But also understand, after years of misery with this team, you have the chance to end on a note of glory if you play this right... and that may be worth more to you than another ten million you can never spend.

I don’t take Terry’s trade request as a slap in the face. I take it as him playing the last card he has at his disposal. He, no doubt, feels the clock ticking on his career. A career cut shorter in time than most due his age at entry into the league. That sucks for him but it is what it is. I hope (and expect) that both sides will find an agreement that they can live with.

I don’t find comparing McLaurin and Evans all that compelling when discussing their differences in any approach to being mindful of what is best for their respective teams, mainly because Terry has career earnings of 56m while Evan’s has pocketed 134m. It’s much easier to be magnanimous with that much more in your pockets.

Terry once he finishes his contract this season would make about 82 million. Not bad start leading into contract #3.

I get that Evans has played more, was arguably in his younger years the more marquee WR compared to Terry, and naturally earned more. So maybe he deserves no special props for doing it. I get the thought. But for me he gets props for three reasons.

A. like I said in other posts, its not just these players doing it. But them talking about it. Talking about loving it in Tampa and wanting to win there -- and not in a vacuum but specific to their contract.
B. their actions have consequences that help the team, regardless of how much money they've made in the past.
C. The example it sets for other players. Lets take Tampa for example. L. David took less money and talked about it first. Then Evans. Then Godwin. It's part of the culture there that's set by their leaders. We are getting paid a ton already, lets keep this together and win a SB.

Does that have a ripple effect for the rest of the team? I'd guess with at least some players. Contrast that with Terry, who is telling the world how this FO is disrespecting him. Terry talked about talking to other players on the team about his plight and how they sympathize. lol, I doubt Terry is presenting a balanced view of this FO to his teammates. I'd put money that Terry is giving opposite vibes to his teammates that the Tampa players are -- hey Peters might be a nice guy but he will treat you unfairly when your contract is up. So guys don't budge an inch. Don't buy the BS that your contract effects keeping other players -- they can figure it out. On and on.

Would love to hear that a little from Terry just once, look I want to win, and I want a contract that I think helps us do that and pays me my fair share -- or whatever. Terry's rhetoric is IMO as ego centric as his demands are. And again, most players are the same way. I get it. But if we are going to make the case that Terry is different -- he's special as to loving it here and wanting to win or whatever -- I don't think so anymore. I don't think he's worse than the typical player but not special as for wanting to be here and wanting to win.

So yeah I'd give Mike Evans or even dudes like Josh Allen props for discussing it -- regardless of how much money they've made previously. As leaders on the team, making a point that they care about keeping the team intact to win, etc -- to me is meaningful. Speaking about their money in the context of the team overall -- I like that.

But if we are running with earnings so far. Maybe Godwin, at 80 million career earnings, based on those parameters deserves more props for turning down 30 million from NE. The way Terry's acting do we think think Terry in FA no less would turn down 30 million for 22? He comes off like a dude who wouldn't turn down 30 million elsewhere even if this team offered him 29.

Cortland Sutton, with almost identical numbers to Terry last season, granted not as good a career, making about the same (slightly less) in career earnings, said he took less. And again talked about winning. Denver might be in a SB window, too. For me I keep props for the action but equal props for discussing it. That IMO is a much better example for the rest of the team.

If I am thinking for example about Jayden's next contract which clearly will be crazy big. We got Terry likely in Jayden's ear telling him already not to trust this FO. What a difference between that and Godwin and Sutton, etc.

He would have been a great signing for the Patriots, and at just 29 years old, would have been a nice long-term complement to Drake Maye. But Godwin turned down more money from the Patriots, instead returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a three-year, $66 million deal, which averages $22 million per year.

"If I ended up going to New England," Godwin said. "It would have been solely based off money because everything else was telling me to stay here."

The Patriots had the best offer on the table for Godwin, based solely on money. If Godwin was looking to strictly cash in, the Patriots were the destination. Godwin's agent, Tory Dandy, mentioned that Godwin left "generational money" on the table by passing up on the Patriots' offer.

But, he looked for a place where he and his wife would be most happy, which was staying in Tampa Bay with the Buccaneers. The Patriots pulled out all the stops for Godwin, but he decided to stay where he was drafted for his family, an understandable decision, even if it meant leaving significantly more money on the table.

Godwin was my dream free agent and I was bummed that Washington didn't land him. But knowing the Patriots made him a huge offer and still couldn't pry him away from the Bucs makes me feel better.

Btw, the comment above about Godwin's wife wanting to stay in Tampa Bay - it matters. Someone was asking why folks keep bringing up McLaurin's new wife. A possible factor in all of this is that she doesn't want to be in the DMV. I don't know that this is the case, but we frequently forget that players are humans too, subject to the same kind of stress and relationships we all are. If we don't think how a partner or spouse feels about a situation matters to a player, we are kidding ourselves.

We should know this - because it drove one of the biggest (and at the time most controversial) Washington trades ever - when we swapped Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis. That trade happened because of Bailey's marital issues (and this came directly from the guy at the top of the front office). Had nothing to do with football.

So while I have no idea if McLaurin's wife likes being in DC, it's quite possible it's a bigger factor than we realize.

I get the point. Though specific to Godwin, I recall NFL insider types said he really really loves it in Tampa and thought it would take one hell of an overpay to pry him away from that team. And lol, apparently even the overpay didn't work on him. So with Godwin I do think his wife was the gravy.

As for Terry, if they paid him what he wants, he clearly would stay. So am guessing his wife isn't an X factor here. I've heard enough from insiders I trust including Keim that Terry is plenty happy to play here. But the money is the X factor.

Also for me my bar is lower for Terry than it is for Sutton, Godwin, etc. I am not expecting a team discount. But a fair deal on both sides.

Oh yeah, I agree this is *mostly* about the money. I'm just pointing out that players have to 'navigate' their most important relationships just like the rest of us. Even to the extent a partner shapes one's opinions and moods. We've all bitched to our spouse, significant other, about life stresses and lets be honest, they are almost always going to reinforce the likely one-sided view of things we present. They love us and want to support us. But sometimes we are wrong or being stubborn and need someone we respect to help us see that.

Too lazy to pick this one sentence out of a long post.

B. their actions have consequences that help the team, regardless of how much money they've made in the past.”

My singular point was that it is easier to be willing to help the team when you have already filled your pockets to the brim.

(Not to say that Terry hasn’t already done so as compared with average people. He has but the circumstances of that differentiation are not relevant to me.)

Has Terry lost some luster in my mind during this process? Yes

Will I get over it when/if he ultimately signs and performs up to his history? Also yes.

Sure, lol, i am married I get it. My favorite football example of it was Shanny saying it was between taking a job in Washington or Buffalo and he said his wife told him we aren't going to Buffalo.

As for Terry's wife, she's been with him from what I read the whole time. Dated in HS and continued dating throughout his career.

The good news abut Terry, digesting all the inside stuff leaked about the contract -- I think he absolutely does love Washington and wants to win a SB here. But....ts not more important than getting what he feels he deserves financially.

The dude previously that I had a little issue with as to money was Payne. He seemed more driven in his contract year, did money signs when he made sacks, etc. And then after getting paid wasn't the same.

He in effect is in a contract year this season because they can get out of it. And am hearing he comes off likewise determined this off season. But I liked reading about his mindset.

And don't get me wrong Terry is a baller, his mindset well be right as a player, no matter what. But I'd like a little team mentioning in the context of his contract. Because I don't like the precedent he's setting here for other players negotiation down the line here. As the leader, Terry is saying this FO won't treat you fairly. Especially in the context of the future Jayden contract -- its a bad thing to put in the water IMO.

"Man, we were in a good place last year, and I want to be one of the reasons we get to the Super Bowl," Payne told Scott Abraham on Tuesday, following practice. It's important to Payne, seeing all of those seasons without a winning record. Payne certainly realizes success is not going to be automatic in 2025, simply because there was success in 2024 for the Commanders.

While Terry McLaurin's contract drama dominates the headlines for the Commanders, money is not an issue for Payne. Abraham mentioned to Payne on Tuesday that this is Payne's final contract year. Payne responded, "I'm just playing ball. Right now, I'm at the point in my career where I am just having fun. Everything I do is fun to me, like working hard, being out here in the sun, playing with these guys, it is fun."

...Payne expressed, "Yeah man, I got all the money I want. So, I'm really just (pause)..." Payne then talked of how last year was a special year.
