The All Things Terry Thread

I am no basing it on Sutton alone. I've commented about other players who have done the same and posted some of their comments on it days before the Sutton stuff.

I am not expecting Terry to sacrifice for the team. But for two contracts in a row, from what I've heard, he doesn't budge, he holds out and pouts when he doesn't get what he wants -- and the first time that FO felt it was an overpay but Dan insisted to get it done and he needed a PR win. Now we are going through rodeo two of this. I heard Bram said the other day that Ron had voiced some pessimism at some point in the prior negotiations. I don't recall that. But i do recall a reporter saying recently the previous negotiations hit a similar impasse but Dan resolved it by telling the FO to give in.

Terry's actions and comments alone come off all about him, as I explained. And look I am sure most players feel the same way about their own situation. And that's fine.

But if Terry touts himself again as being special as to how his actions deserve compensation because of how good a solidier he is -- it turns me off a little now considering he's a bit all the top with how he approaches contracts. No every player holds out. Not every player bashes the team. Not every player pushes for basically an overpay (I know he doesn't per se think it is), not every player doesn't mention that they'd like to work out something that benefits all parties and help the team win.

It minimizes to me the idea that Terry is all about the team. And my point isn't he needs to be all about the team. But if he is going to sell himself as that including talking about himself in third person as if the persona is a bit larger than life for all the leadership-team stuff he's about -- speaking for myself it has a disclaimer on it now.

For me with Sutton its not so much whether he sincerely gave a discount or not. But that he went through the trouble of explaining how he wants this team to win and be able to keep other players. It's at least on Sutton's mind. With Terry, everything is about Terry. Does the team appreciate him? Do they see Terry the way Terry sees himself? He sees what they pay him as a sign that the team believes Terry is just as good or better than the elite WRS? It feels like we got Terry on the couch and its about him being validated.

That's fine but for a dude who sells himself as a "we" team guy -- he doesn't rock that way in his negotiations, not a whit from what I can tell so far. Not as to his actions. Not as to his rhetoric.
How many more days until the fanbase turns on him do you think? I give it another week or two and then there will be quite a few people that will be pro-HOG side in the argument.

How many more days until the fanbase turns on him do you think? I give it another week or two and then there will be quite a few people that will be pro-HOG side in the argument.

It's already happened. Keim referenced the point on his podcast. He will have his share of people who will say pay the dude whatever he wants. But I think Terry has lost the PR battle. His press conference. Hold out. Leaks about the previous negotiation. And the leak from Schefter. All I think has hurt his cause with fans.

I do think fans still love the player. I do, too. But I don't see Terry as all about the team. I don't think he's the opposite of this either. I think he's a really good teammate. He's really good with the fans. But I get the impression that individual esteem and payment is more important to him than the team winning a SB. And by that I don't mean he won't give everything he has to win a SB.

But there is nothing about his actions or rhetoric that makes me think he cares at all about how his negotiation-contract effect the team big picture wise -- whether its him holding out or whether an overpayment going his way impacts who else stays with the team.

And again i am not saying other players don't think and do the same. And I don't condemn them for that. I get the logic. But for me, and judging by here and twitter, etc, some fans -- i think the idea that Terry is selfless above and beyond is out the window.

He's not special on that count. He's like most other athletes that care much more about themsleves than they do the team. And again, no judgement, I don't blame them. But my point is if Terry is going to bill himself special on that front, he's IMO not. Yes he's not a diva. Yes, his personality is uber pleasant. But he's not the only WR in the NFL who is a good guy. But there are others who go above and beyond in ways that Terry isn't willing to go.

There are some who are good guys like a Mike Evans and like a Chris Godwin, who care more about the team and winning a SB than they do whether they can pocket another 4 million more or whatever a season. So when others talk about it like Sutton, Josh Allen, etc. At a minimum it shows its on their mind. There is nothing about how Terry negotiated the last contract and this current one that gives me any impression he cares big time about how it effects the team. Or for that matter anything he says indicates its on his mind either.

For example in the cases of Evans or Godwin, not only did they take lesser deals they did it in the context of FA where they were offered more money. With Terry, I get the impression he'd go to any team that paid him more. And Terry is high maintenance on that front when he ALREADY is under contract. Can you imagine Mike Evans under contract sitting out camp? Or Mike Evans saying its not about the money but the figure shows how much the team loves me?

Evans took (as did Godwin) hometown discounts. No, whining about how he's not getting as much as "lesser" receivers". No whining about how the team isn't showing him the love and they should be real with him if they aren't that into him, etc.

Mike Evans refused bigger deal from another team to continue legacy with Buccaneers

A recent report confirms which NFL team was willing to outbid the Buccaneers for Mike Evans last offseason.

Although the fact that Evans chose to re-up with the Buccaneers for a very reasonable contract is already well known, details regarding the teams that were courting him, and what they were willing to offer him at the time, are not.

Until now.

A more financially lucrative situation, in the bright lights of L.A. with those two receivers alongside him and Matthew Stafford throwing the ball, would be a difficult opportunity for any NFL wide receiver to turn down.

...Thankfully for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Evans isn't just any NFL wide receiver. And as a result, a Tampa Bay Buccaneer he will remain.

Here's exactly what Breer had to say about Godwin turning down a monster offer from the Patriots to stay in Tampa Bay:

"it wasn’t the first time the Bucs had gotten such affirmation from a star receiver. Last year, in fact, Mike Evans agreed to a two-year, $41 million deal to stay in Tampa after the Rams upped the ante and went past where the Buccaneers were financially."

As the top WR available on the free agent market this offseason, Chris Godwin received plenty of attention. It's even been reported that Godwin turned down approximately $30 million per year from the New England Patriots in order to return to the Buccaneers on a very reasonable, 3-year, $66 million contract.

Bucs GM Jason Licht, was elated to get Godwin back, especially because he knew he couldn't compete with the amount of money other teams were willing to offer. It's a feeling that Jason Licht has become familiar with, as the majority of his best players have chosen to re-sign in Tampa Bay despite having more lucrative offers on the table to jump ship.

How many more days until the fanbase turns on him do you think? I give it another week or two and then there will be quite a few people that will be pro-HOG side in the argument.

I think the longer he holds out the more likely this becomes. I get this is a business and you have to take care of yourself but most fans are working people, and at some point it’s going to be harder to be sympathetic to a guy who is making 22.5 million dollars this season to play football …who is upset because he isn’t going to get 30 million. Maybe that is an oversimplification but I think I’m making my point. At the end of the day, the guy is not gonna be starving if he manages his money correctly.

If the fans start to think he’s screwing up team chemistry so his millionaires bank account can grow by a few more million…going to be tough to continue to back him.

I can understand and respect your viewpoint but, to me, shaving 4 to 5 million dollars off the top end of what he is asking for isn't a make or break issue for team construction. would it help? of course, but contracts always get restructured and manipulated. if terry was like this about the contract AND played selfishly I'd agree with you. to me, the more important aspects about "team first" behavior are:
  • leadership
  • preparation (physically and mentally)
  • doing the little things for others like blocking and not taking plays off when the ball isn't coming to you
  • celebration of the accomplishments of others and not sulking because it's not you
  • prioritizing winning over individual accolades
Terry has that stuff in spades. if the business aspect of how things have been going this off-season spoils all of that and taints Terry as a "me first" kind of guy for some, it is what it is.

i think another aspect of not overpaying is that they don't want to set a precedent. If they basically say "If you're a good player and hold out, we'll eventually give in and overpay you like crazy" (assuming what was reported about Terry wanting significantly more than Metcalf is true) then that's going to create a ripple effect. Maybe Tunsil will do it next, maybe Deebo, etc. etc. And as was mentioned in a response to you, it's also cumulative. One guy gets an extra $5mil, then another guy does and so on.

I think I can summarize it best this way. 3 approaches to a contract.

A. I want to get that overpay. If am selling something on ebay which I think I can get $200, i want to shoot for $250 and see where it goes. And in contract terms I am going to kick and scream, and hold out and do whatever it takes, hard negotiation to get my overpay. Because heck others get that overpay sometimes, why not me?

B. I have a sense of the $200 value on ebay, lets get the $200. If someone is willing to pay me more, fantastic. I'll ask for more but if its clear its not coming, I'll back off.

C. I love where am at, its special, and I've made plenty of big money, i am good with taking 2 million or whatever less because I am still getting paid big. But lets win a Sb, and I'd rather stay here then go elsewhere.

There are some dudes, not many, but some who engage in plan C. Mike Evans doesn't scream to the world that he's a leader and a great teammate, he lets his actions do the talking about how much he does want to be in Tampa.

Now for Terry, I am not expecting C. But look if this dude is going to tout how special his intangibles are (and on the field and off the field they clearly are special) then IMO it diminshes it when you talk about that in the context of a price tag.

And be level B on negotiations if your point is how much you love it in DC. Terry is at A. And I'd bet considering what he's said including suggesting that asking for a trade isn't off the table -- that money comes before staying in DC. So he loves it here am sure. But not like Evans and Godwin love being in Tampa. And again, i am sure most players are like that. And I get it. It doesn't make them bad people. Most people would do the same. But if we are going to put Terry on a pedestal of being better than most -- he's off that pedestal for me and clearly some fans, too.

And if I am Peters and I am trying to build a culture. Based on Terry's actions he doesn't seem indispensable on that front. He ultimately wants guys like L. David, Godwin, Evans, all guys who talk about wanting to win a SB, loving it in Tampa and willing to sacrifice a little to make it happen. Terry is a good culture guy IMO. But not an elite culture guy IMO. Those guys are elite judging by their actions. And you aren't going to get a lot who sacrifice like that but at a minimum if I am shooting for a SB I want guys who are in category B, not category A.

SIP - that is a fantastic post brother. I don't know that I've seen it characterized better than you've just done. Very well said.

yeah, I get that and agree. I'm just saying, from a fan's perspective, the 5ish million or whatever doesn't matter - if AP decides to acquiese to some level and overpay some it's not the end of the world and won't prevent AP from making the roster moves he wants to do. he overpaid kinlaw but we're not too worried about that.

could you provide specific quotes? I have tried to stay unplugged from all this contract drama, but from the stuff i've seen from eastern motors interview to the interview with Chick Hernandez I haven't seen Terry pouting or bashing the team. other than him expressing frustration and maybe not liking the fact he's talking to the media at all, the things he has said has not come across that way to me. as far as touting his specialness, even that, it just seems like he's stating his case for how he's contributed to the team and thinks he belongs in the same tier as some off his peers...but it didn't come across as egotistical or him saying "I AM HIMOTHY".

I realize that I am a fan of Terry so I might be viewing things on the rosier side so I just wanna know what you guys are specifically referring to that has given this impression to you guys. I will say Terry is expounding too much in his answers and in his feelings too much, when it doesn't really help the situation. if his intention is solely to garner public support with a sob story, yes that is a bad move and won't win points with anyone. maybe I'm being too forgiving after having recently seen the stuff with how aiyuk, deebo, davante adams, stefon diggs, etc. have dealt with their unhappiness with contracts or how tyreek hill handled his interview at the end of the season.

If the leak from Schefter is true and Terry is asking for more than what DK got, then this is not going to get done anytime soon. I'm OK with letting Terry play out the year and then we franchise him next year.

Terry should be wearing a giant fake red hose that honks if he wants more than DK. Even if the ages were reversed, I don't think they're equal valued.

On what planet is Terry on the Chase/JJ/Lamb level?

He's two years behind being Amari Cooper.

He's throwing his legacy in his clown toilet. He is a holdover from Snyder era and it's showing.

Yes, and I would say this point here is the thing that disappointed me most with Terry and the Eastern Motors press extravaganza. More and more, the guy is convincing me that he is all about his own wealth and not the health of the team.

I’m all for every player getting everything they can get. What irks me is when the ask is entirely out of alignment with reality.

Kirk was different. He was asking for a market deal and the team was stupid. And late figuring out they were stupid.

Terry seems to be getting offered something in line with his production and age and he’s essentially throwing a tantrum because he has been convinced he can leverage the team and get a deal much higher than his value.

What I think is most disappointing is the advice Terry is getting and the fact he’s listening to it.

I am going to continue to push-back on those that want to lay the blame completely for the situation at the feet of Terry’s current agent. Not because he is blameless but because he is seemingly not providing his client with a reasonable and measured evaluation of the facts on the ground. There is, however, a (high) probability that he is simply driving the car in which Terry is in control of the GPS. In fact, beyond probability imo, he is simply navigating a route that his client has designed.

There is little doubt in my mind that this negotiation would already have been settled if a Tom Condon or Ben Dogra from CAA or a Drew Rosenhaus were the agent. The reason? Because they are unafraid to speak truth to talent with their clients and they also have the respect and relationships with those who control the checkbooks. Neither qualities of which Mr. Baker seems to possess from outside looking in.

I think the other difference with Kirk is he didn't hold out, didn't really whine much publicly and was willing to call the team's bluff in that he was good with hitting FA. I don't get the impression Terry wants to test FA because he and his agent likely know they won't get that big contract they want on the open market.

I'm not sure anyone is laying the blame completely on the agent but IMO, the agent deserves at least half of the blame and this statement below kind of backs that up.

"There is little doubt in my mind that this negotiation would already have been settled if a Tom Condon or Ben Dogra from CAA or a Drew Rosenhaus were the agent. The reason? By shots at the team, I am referring to the FO, not respecting him, etc. And if you listened to the actual press conferences his tone brought this home. He's multiple times leaked leading into this how disappointed he is with the negotiation. The idea that he wants to be valued in the tier of certain WRS, and wants the team to show his love by paying him in that strata -- that's been said by multiple reporters covering the story, so I gather they got that from Terry's side.

...he said, "it takes two to tango."

"With how the market is today it conveys what guys of my caliber are deserving of. I feel I fit in that box because of how I've carried myself on and off the field. I don't want to feel like you have to beg for someone to see your worth and value.

"When you have that type of production, when you know how people value you and see you have told you to your face and then you see how it's progressing until this point, that's very disappointing. I'm just trying to get some clarity. Shoot it to me straight."

...He said they're not at a point of "no return" but later said, "I guess you can say there is a point of no return. I don't think it's at that now but ... time is kind of ticking."

...He then pointed out how he took a slant 36 yards for a touchdown in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

"People making it seem like I need to start getting fitted for a walker and a cane," McLaurin said. "My game is going to mature in a great way."

..."You do want to feel valued and appreciated," McLaurin said. "With how the market is today, it conveys what guys of my caliber are deserving of. I feel I fit in that box because of how I've carried myself on and off the field.

..."When things were adverse when there was a lot of chaos going on, I held firm, I held strong," McLaurin said. "I held my head high and I was a leader.

Terry McLaurin Considering Holdout or Trade Request From Washington Commanders

According to Fox Sports’ Henry McKenna, McLaurin is keeping all of his options open when it comes to his future in Washington.

The two-time Pro Bowl receiver rightfully wants a new deal since he’s heading into a contract year. He’d prefer to get that contract from the Commanders so he can continue being Jayden Daniels’ top target. However, as McKenna tells it, McLaurin really just wants to get paid.

As a result, McLaurin is reportedly even willing to consider holding out from training camp in an effort to gain more leverage during contract negotiations. Otherwise, he may be prepared to demand a trade out of D.C.

One thing I think Terry has going against him is that he thinks the team owes him for being a good soldier because he has been through so much with this team. In the glory days, Gibbs kept Jacoby, Donnie Warren, and others well past their best playing days partly for that reason. They had been a huge part of their journey together. In their final years, Gibbs not only paid them, but probably overpaid them. Gave them their gold watch so to speak. In some respects, even though it's the flip side, Snyder's hell years vs. Gibbs' golden ones, I think Terry wants that kind of treatment.

However, while we've been on this march as fans with Terry, Quinn and Peters have not. There's no history there. There's no shared comradery. There's no we've lived and died together and I know what you sacrificed for me, there. Yes, Snyder owes Terry a lot for taking this team's reputation on his shoulders. Rivera owes Terry a lot for being the consumate pro when everything was going to hell. While Quinn and Peters have been here, Terry hasn't had to be Atlas holding up the world. The team hasn't been on fire. So, Quinn and Peters in their bones like and respect Terry as a good player who did good things for them, but they don't feel the obligation of years served and favors done. They haven't seen Terry go above and beyond because while they've been here, Terry hasn't had to.

A while ago, I talked about the pain and suffering bonus Terry (and Chris added that we fans) deserve for enduring Snyder. I still think that we all deserve that, but on the other hand that penalty is not Harris', Quinn's or Peters' penalty to pay. It's not their debt.

I want Terry to get a good deal. I even kind of want him to get somewhat overpaid because I've shared the pain of these past years and know what he has meant to the team. I also know he's been a very good to great player for us and believe he still will be that for 2-3 more years. Quinn and Peters and Harris haven't been on the same ride. So, they have the luxury and sense to negotiate strictly in the present and looking at the future. So, overpaying may be in the cards, but that golden parachute contract that Terry wants probably isn't.

Yeah agree. It comes off a bit tacky for me for him to talk about being rewarded for being a good dude -- to me it takes some of the luster away from him being that good dude.

I don't want to feel like you have to beg for someone to see your worth and value. Everything in previous regimes and now I've done everything asked of me."

McLaurin served as the face of the franchise during the turbulent final years of the Dan Snyder regime, often getting asked difficult questions about the state of the organization.

Terry seems like he was close to elite culture status prior to this negotiation process. He has been a leader for this team when they needed leaders and had few from front office to coaching to players. It is a shame that he is now tarnishing the good memories of fanbase. The fanbase that has not had many good memories in recent years by trying to strong arm the negotiations to a fault.
