I mean, we need him and have cap space too.
If NE would be willing to pay him way over his market rate then maybe his market rate is higher than I think.
But candidly, I don’t think NE would trade for Terry and then overpay him.
We’re not trading Terry. Either he’s going to “suck it up” and play for ~$20m this year or he’s going to get an extension. The choice is most likely his to make.

I have to wonder if the Front Office is risking fines or even draft pick penalties by circumventing league intent? The daily fines the league mandates for players holding out and not honoring their existing contractual obligations are very stiff for a reason.
Putting a player holding out on the PUP list on the basis of a seemingly phantom injury - if I’m the league I don’t look favorably on that.
I get they are likely doing so as a show of good will - and maybe it’s considered a routine thing, but I still worry it could be viewed suspiciously by the NFL.

Hendrickson appears to be the reasonable party in his situation. Terry does not. I’d honestly rather have a 31yo pass rusher that led the league in sacks twice, than a 31yo receiver, that never led the league in either category.
I think that’s unlikely because even if it’s a “wink wink” deal, the league would have to come after Terry for lying about his ankle, which the NFLPA would then go to war over. You can’t prove a guy isn’t feeling something because not every injury requires structural damage that can be imaged. It’s a pretty flawless loophole in that regard

Most of these fines can be (and are) waived by the team when the player signs the extension. I'm assuming we'll do the same with Terry.
At this point if I was AP? I would offer him a very nice 3-year deal which is an extension on this year + 2. It would be favorable for him in guaranteed money for the next two years, and favorable for the team on the third year.
If he did not want to take this reasonable offer? Let him play out his existing contract and we franchise him. Meanwhile we develop a strategy for his replacement. I am sure that AP is already well down this path.

They actually changed this, the fines can no longer be waived, and are no longer optionally imposed by the team in the first place but are just a consequence. I’m sure teams just bump the guaranteed money up by a couple hundred thousand to make up for it in negotiations, though. So it’s splitting hairs

Although I hate to provide Florio with even a ray of sunshine…there are some parallels and what if’s here with the Terry situation-
Keim's latest podcast.
A. Keim asking others around the league if the 30 plus age matters -- and the answer he got was yes.
B. Terry and this team are miles apart as for the contract right now. Both sides have to give. Neither side will entertain the other sides ask right now -- too far apart
C. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes on for a few weeks more

I’m not disagreeing with you, but with the idea. Both sides literally do not have to give. The team can make Terry play out his current contract and then Franchise him. The team should only give if it makes sense for them. Terry should only refuse to give, if it makes sense for him. The mistake the media makes is portraying this as if it’s about perceived value. And that’s partially true. But, it’s more about leverage.

Look, the team has almost all of the leverage here. Sure TM can refuse to play, but he’s under contract and playing hardball is going to lessen the chance he gets a deal or is traded to a good situation. I think he’s getting bad advice from his agent and will be lucky if he gets a new deal.
And Conn, you are probably right, I’m just looking at how the NFL has tried to close loopholes on what happens when players ‘sit out’ for contract demands - and I’m also looking at Dallas, the Giants, and the Eagles who would love for the league to look at what Peters is doing and question the validity of it. Makes me nervous. We all know TM is fine and would be practicing if it weren’t for the hold out. The NFL likely knows it too.

I've been thinking about the Snyder-effect on Terry's psyche. For almost the entirety of his career, McLaurin has watched how Snyder operated. Favorite sons got favored treatment. They got cap-breaking contracts that set broke new grounds independent of age or playing trajectory. Hell, often name recognition and potential jersey sales were the only thing that mattered. Performance was a tertiary issue.
This is what he has learned. This is his normal.
Well, now he probably figures it's his turn. Doesn't he deserve to get the ginormous contract that has been the way his whole career? He's been the good soldier, the consummate professional! Why should he take it on the chin? He looks around the league and mostly sees confirmation that other "favored" sons are getting rewarded with Snyderesque contracts. And Terry just had the best year of his career. In his mind, he's still an immortal. It's probably very difficult for him to see his future and not imagine success. He's not wired to imagine that he could get hurt or that he will be less than the best. So, why should he take a back seat and "settle." Why shouldn't he get the Snyder deal? If Higgins, a glorified #2, just got a Snyder deal, if other injured players like CeeDee are playing on Snyder deals... well, why shouldn't he!
I don't think Terry is right, but I imagine even if he would deny it or isn't conscious of it... that this is what's been going through his head as his worm tongue agent seeks to further corrupt him.

Maybe not - but we got hammered in the past when we only violated the intent of a rule. No longer being a Snyder commodity probably helps but I wouldn’t be so absolute. As others have said, the problem is it’s difficult to prove McLaurin has no injury.

The only caveat being that Terry's last contract was already a huge (probably slightly overpaid) contract... so he sort of already got his huge deal.
