Josh Allen Was Refreshingly Honest on Why He Didn't Push for More Money in Contract

But there was a sense among some, especially those in the media, that Allen, coming off of an MVP season, could have pushed the Bills to become the highest-paid player in league history if he had wanted to.

But, as Allen himself said during a news conference on Wednesday, pushing the Bills for more money in contract talks wasn't something he wanted to do. And the reigning NFL MVP had a refreshingly honest perspective on why that was the case.

"It didn't seem like from my perspective I was taking a whole lot less," Allen said with a smile. "But the way I make sense of it, when you start getting these fairly big numbers throughout the entire league ... It's weird to say this ... but what is five [million dollars] more going to do for my life that I can't already do right now? It's not that crazy to me. I live a pretty good life. Got a house, got a car. We're good."

..."I wasn't looking to absolutely kill them at every chance I could, and I told my agent that," Allen said. "I was like, 'If it has any impact on the cap, let's figure out a way to not do that.' Both sides were willing to move and change different things, and it was a pretty calm-mannered negotiation is what I can say from both sides."

Above all? Allen, who has spent all seven seasons in Buffalo, loves being a Bill.

"I don't want to play anywhere else," Allen said. "Buffalo is home to me and it always will be."

Now that is a true team first guy. Terry is starting to show his diva. So much for him not having that personality...

Yes they absolutely do, and abide by the contract therein.

Guaranteed money is paid at cut-time, etc. It's still a legally binding contract. I guess what you are saying is, he is holding out and not getting paid, sort of like self-cutting? I am not sure that's a valid take, but it's definitely interesting. I guess it depends on how you look at the contract. I think what has come to be understood is:
- the only guarantee is the guaranteed money. That's IT. Nothing else is "guaranteed" from the team's side. So, that is now taken to be "understood."
- I guess now there is a question on what is guaranteed for the team? They guarantee the money. They get one year? They get as much as they guaranteed, as in, if they guaranteed money over 3-years, they get 3-years? I don't think that's what's happening. So, it seems like there is no guarantee from the player's side. I am not on the team's side, but it's unclear to me what the players are guaranteeing now in return for the guaranteed money. They just complain when the market changes.

That's how markets work. We all live with that. Don't sign unless you understand the risks. I have no problem with the idea that when guaranteed money is done, you want to hold out, because at that time, you can be cut (just like you said). Once the contract year is started? Once any money is guaranteed though? I think that becomes a valid part of what you signed, they are now on the hook to pay you, you are on the hook to play.

That is how I see it, at least until someone explains to me how my logic is off - which of course it can be. I feel like I scratch the surface in my full comprehension of all of the ins and outs right now, but I am interested in learning.

I don’t disagree with your understanding of how it works from the team perspective.

But you seem to be ignoring that McLaurin is also exercising tools at his disposal that were negotiated in that same CBA agreement the team is abiding by.

There’s a mechanism in place to allow what he’s doing. That’s why he’s being fined every day he holds out. He and his agent are making the strategic choice to lose that money in order to attempt to apply leverage to negotiate for more. It’s a cost benefit analysis they’ve made based on the rules in place. Teams aren’t allowed to forgive those fines anymore, either. They used to be able to waive them once a contract was agreed to—they can’t anymore, though it’s probably worked into the new contract anyways to make peace.

If McLaurin wasn’t allowed to hold out the way he’s doing now, there wouldn’t be a fine system in place—instead there would be a mechanism to make it extremely unappealing or unrealistic. Not reporting to camp would result in game checks lost or suspensions if it was something the parties who negotiated the CBA deemed as “illegal” as a negotiating tactic. They didn’t do that. They put in place the fine mechanism which tacitly allows holding out as a negotiating tactic, for a price. They didn’t say “you’re violating your contract if you hold out”, they instead negotiated it to be “this is what it costs you to take the big swing and hold out while you’re under contract”.

So both parties are following the rules and honoring the current contract as negotiated under the current CBA. Holding out is a tool for the players and it is allowed, just like cutting a player with no remaining guarantees costing teams nothing is a tool that is allowed.

Nobody is violating any contract or failing to honor it.

That was what I was getting at. That if you think what teams do is fine, then what Terry is doing is also fine. Because both are operating within the rules they negotiated.

I don’t think Terry deserves $35-40M.

But say $28M over 3 years with high guaranteed money for first two years?

If the team wants they can hard ball it as he has a contract for 2025.

And Terry can then sit out until Game 7 or whenever the deadline for counting league year kicks in.

Then he is not in football shape and like a lot of holdouts ends up with a pulled hamstring or groin that limits what he can do.

No one wins the staring contest.

Especially with where this team is now with so few players making real money in 2025 and 2026.

A number of capable starting outside receivers were available in free agency or via trade but we decided to grab Deebo, a fine short to intermediate receiver but not someone I would count on to light the lamp downfield.

Now that is a true team first guy. Terry is starting to show his diva. So much for him not having that personality...
Considering how late he joined the league and how awful his QBs have been his entire career, he absolutely should be doing what he can to make sure he gets paid what he deserves.

Nobody else is looking out for his financial interest aside from him and his agent. Sorry but calling him a diva of all people for negotiating his final big contract is quite a stretch.

Terry got a VERY good contract 3 years ago from Washington, so while I get the ‘max it out’ argument you can make the case he wasn’t close to top 5 when he signed the last deal.

Overall, Washington has shown him respect.

He wanted most of his money front loaded and we did that for him, ie he has to deal with a final uncovered year.

I have seen a LOT worse from teams re players still under contract.

That said we should look for a deal, but not because we have done Terry wrong up till now.

$28M/yr for 3 years with high guaranteed over the first two years is something we would all jump at imo, it doesn’t sound like something (right now) that his agent is interested in.

If they are being stubborn at the $32-34M number, I’m sorry but that makes them the party that’s in the “wrong” in this situation. If it’s just a beginning number to negotiate from, fine, no one’s the bad guy and they’ll come to a deal soon. But if that’s the number they’re STUCK on as a matter of respect and recognition? Then they are the unreasonable party in the end. That’s not the tier of player he’s in or the age bracket he’s in. He checks neither box for a contract that size, it’s not even one or the other. It’s both. Nobody in this league would pay him that—especially not after trading for him, which is the only way he’d have a shot at it from someone else.

I said before training camp that we all needed to mentally prepare for him to hold-out or hold-in for 1-2 weeks before we REALLY consider this a problem. We’ll see after next week where we are.

The Terry McLaurin Fine Tracker

(I can’t determine whether or not missing Tuesday’s report and conditioning test day counts as a fineable offense under the CBA. So for the purpose of this little exercise I’m going to include it since I doubt his absence was a team approved one.)

Day 3 total- 150k (or 500 years/6000 months of Netflix’s premium subscription service)

Obviously Terry’s agent looks at the team not taking a WR with one of the top picks and not signing WR who plays on outside and comes to conclusion this offense can’t be productive down the field without him.

The Bengals went nuts and signed their #2 WR Tee Higgins to a deal higher than all but a couple of #1’s around the league.

No doubt that contract has caused the other 31 teams issues with slotting salaries and grading on the curve.

Denanding a specific salary out of "respect" is absolutely diva behavior.

Higgins is like 25 years old though. He gets a premium because of that.

And he also shared an agent with Jamar Chase and the Bengals made the mistake of allowing their contracts to come due at the same time because they had already franchised Higgins. So their agent was able to negotiate for them both and double each of their leverage 😂 both signed the same day, eventually.

That’s just malpractice from the Bengals org

I don't think he's being a diva for negotiating his final contract. I don't think anyone here does. The premise for these arguments unless I missed one isn't that.

It's that both this contract and the previous one, he doesn't show up to camp. There are plenty of players who do go to camp during negotiations. Not him. And that doesn't make him diva like either but when you add that AND...

A. Talking about how the team doesn't value him and how disappointed he is in that
B. That if the team really doesn't see him the way he does, just shoot it straight to him.
C. On and on about being post 30 years old and age doesn't apply to him because to quote him "he's different"
D. Referring to himself in third person
E. Leaking via his agent (and referencing it some himself) about how he needs to be valued financially just like any of these top players who are younger than him.

Now, point E alone and the holding out stuff in my book doesn't make him sound like a diva. But everything together, in my book, comes off very drama like. Some of his comments come off divaish to me when taking in concert with multiple holdouts for his contract negotiations.

And I am one of the biggest Terry fans. Some in ES might remember I loved him before the draft and defended that draft pick hard. And I still am a big fan of the dude. As I mentioned as a teammate-player, he's 10 out of 10. With fans, I've interacted with him myself, my kids, etc -- 10 out of 10. Pure class, great guy.

But when it comes to contracts, he seems to be on the high strung side among the players in the league. And as I've mentioned, that's probaby on his agent. I heard recently that his agent was there for the Eastern Motors press conference which went on and on and IMO it didn't make Terry look too hot.

Sheehan did a poll on whose side are you on the contract -- the team or Terry. He got thousands of responses. And he was shocked that it was 50-50. He expected fan favorite Terry would kill it in that poll. And my guess is part of that is the drama coming from Terry's side from time to time.

Comments like that below about age: He IMO comes off like he wants the negotiation to be dictated by his feelings about everything. He flat out has said multiple times he wants the team to feel about him, the way he feels about himself. Can it get more self-serving than that in a negotiation. If I negotiated some of my jobs (I do a lot of free lance) where its like OK, I name the price, this is how I feel about myself. I know a few of my competitors have a bigger reputation, but I consider myself every bit as good as them and want to be paid accordingly. And any concern you have about me is nonsense and insulting -- here is what I deserve. I know lol, I'd lose some job opportunuties.

So to me its the holding out (in BOTH contract negotiations), making dramatic comments about the team not valuing him, for the items that affect other players in his situation at his age he's saying they should be dismissed -- and is making those comments also in a dramatic way. And then the inferences about if the team doesn't want him, they should let him know. And the leaks from his agent about how Terry values himself just as much as the elite WRs and as Terry himself more or less stating them paying him like those elite WRs is an important statement for him as to how they see him.

Simply put, Terry in negotiations comes off high maintenance and yes more dramatic than the typical player. And as I mentioned, a reporter said a similar drill was happening the previous contract but Dan weighed in and told the FO he needs a PR win so just give him what he wants.

"People making it seem like I need to start getting fitted for a walker and a cane," McLaurin said. "My game is going to mature in a great way."

I don’t question Terry directly because I believe he’s being coached by his agent to holdout. I do question Terry’s decision to keep said agent when this is interfering during a TC for a season with SB aspirations. Terry should make every penny he can squeeze out of the hands of the H.O.G.

In the end I think this will all be white noise because Terry ultimately signs an extension, but this was just a bad optics imo.

There's something interesting happening in the Terry story. Because the Commanders are contenders, Terry's hold out is only one of the stories. You're seeing coverage of the training camp, stadium deal, etc. That's not to say Terry's not important, but he's not the only story in town because the team matters again.

Higgins is like 25 years old though. He gets a premium because of that.
And ppl need to realize if a guy not named JaMarr Chase was on his team he’d be a legit better then a lot of #1 WR including Terry McLaurin WR in the NFL, as would Davonte Smith and a few others on the NFL… I’m sorry I’m not comparing Higgins deal with what McLaurin should or shouldn’t get. We love Terry no doubt but he’s at best 5th best WR (AJ Brown, Davonte Smith, CeeDee Lamb, and Nabers) in our own division … he’s not even close to 32m or higher… in fact 28 is pushing it imho
