The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Just watched a quick pod that had Ian Rapoport on, he still thinks the Terry deal gets done, he doesn’t think it’s unusual that there’s been no communication since minicamps a month ago and reiterated that deadlines drive deals. Camp starting, or a hold-in at the start of camp leading to a signing, is when he expects the sides to really have incentive to talk. He expects Peters to “take the high road” and not engage through the media (and actually made a comment that Peters doesn’t talk to media and doesn’t want anything out in the media ever, which we’ve all noticed).

So, no real news, but one of the biggest insiders basically saying that things are going as expected from his view on the outside and that generally he still expects both sides to prioritize getting a deal done, it’s at least worth mentioning.
 
We just got Von Miller signed, and now Trey Amos. I feel like now the focus will be on Terry and they will want to get past the last major roster hurdle before camp.

I think it’s important for people to realize what negotiations in the NFL with Stars / Superstars is like. It’s been a long time since we’ve done it. Jamar Chase didn’t get a deal til camp broke. TJ Watt just signed today.

I admit I would like to have this deal done, but I’m not ready to make some sort of premature judgement on Adam Peters and his handling of this situation. We have no idea what the true SOP is for these types of things. If teams paid players the way fans wanted us to play players, we’d have 10 Superstars, each making the most at their positions, then nobody else because fans always tend Overvalue the premium, and undervalue the meat and potatoes of the roster. I remember a lot of people (not necessarily here on the board, but on sports talk radio, twitter, facebook, and all the other random platforms that don’t require a litmus test to share your opinion) being upset at the contract we gave Bobby Wagner, saying we over-paid an over the hill MLB. They were confused why we didn’t draft a LT til the 3rd round, but nobody would give back Jayden Daniels, or Mikey Sainristil at this point.

Is Peters void of criticism? No, he’s not going to be perfect. NOBODY IS… but the bad hasn’t happened yet. Vets report next week, rookies tomorrow. Terry is under contract for 2025. As Boone has pointed out, there is a precedent in the NFL for teams to carry guys through their deal knowing they have ‘2’ years left, if that’s what’s best for the team. Not saying that’s what is going to happen, but it’s definitely a possibility, and it’s not exactly one that defies logic in the league.

I personally would pay Terry, give him $35mil and let me root for one of my favorite players on game day (can’t just say ‘Sunday’ anymore…), but I’m one of those fans I referenced above. No, it’s to a blind “Adam Peters can do no wrong” but equally I think it’s prudent we don’t pass judgement until something actually does go wrong. He may not be batting .1000, but when signing Damiere Byrd to a short term deal, then releasing him prior to the season is arguably your biggest ‘swing and miss’.. I think it’s fair to have a little trust in the man.

I was not a fan of his "impromptu" press conference either but, to be fair to Terry, to my knowledge this was the first time he really spoke on this and the first time there's been a negative/whining tone. Agents are going to do what agents do - in terms of leaking little hints to the media and such to create stories and drama. I almost feel like that part is to be expected. Terry hasn't been constantly going to the media, speaking in podcasts, changing his profile on twitter to remove all team related things, creating cryptic and passive aggressive tweets or social media posts, etc. I think we are all near the tipping point of Terry contract discussion exhaustion, but Terry has not been publicly campaigning, if that's what you mean.

I am on the side of it being the fallback plan unless things have drastically changed. at least publicly, Adam Peters has said he wants to get a contract with Terry done...even in that clip from 3 months ago. I'm taking what he said then at face value since it doesn't put him in an advantageous situation, if anything. So if the situation has changed that drastically then, yeah, the backup plan may be becoming the primary plan. I just don't think this was the intended goal coming into the off-season, if that's what you are saying.

he's the guy we think is better than Emmanuel Forbes (I had to Google for his name because he's so long gone from my mind that I forgot who he was), BSJ, and Michael Davis combined. a low bar, I know.
 
OK OK I've been convinced Von Miller will offer value as a pass rusher. As for Terry radio call in show polls of course show "just pay the man" is the runaway favorite. Fortunately message board posters tend to be more knowledgible and understand if you overpay a WR in his 30's that means you may lose players you have developed and hope to keep down the road. I do agree with the comment that if the team does not slow roll this a bit it would come off as if they caved to his comments.

Yeah even some of the reporters are piling on. I see Loverro wrote a column today about it. I just don't get the idea that negotiation is a one way affair. It's 100% about how the player sees it, not the team, not the league, etc. Whatever Terry wants is the right price -- plain and simple. That seems to be the mindset with some on this.

Imagine if we can negotiate our payraises like that? Hey this is what I deserve. I work hard. I am a good dude. If you disagree with the price I demand, you clearly don't value me, etc.

I wonder to what degree this is true in our specific case? I mean the guys we're developing are mostly still early in their rookie deals and Terry's deal is only likely to be 3 or 4 years. I guess re-signing Luvu's coming up, but do we really have many big signings coming up? Maybe Deebo, but I would rather spend more on Terry even if means Deebo was a one-year rental. Tunsil? Quan Martin?

In today's employment market, people are doing this more and more. Especially if you have a highly valued skillset. IT, medical profession, cyber security and even construction renovation are arenas where friends have pushed for more and gotten it. If you are not shopping yourself, you are doing yourself an injustice.

Indeed, but I bet they do so behind the seen rather than bad mouth the company around clients and coworkers.

It’s a totally different power differential when you are one of the top 12 people in your profession, in the entire world. I can’t even really imagine that.

The crux has to be not wanting a year of Terry with a big cap hit at 32+ years old the same year Jayden is on his 2nd contract. I think we should be willing to do everything (within reason AAV-wise) but that scenario to maximize our window now, and our second window then.

There is so much leverage he has though. If I have for example some unique tech skills where I can just quit and go elsewhere, OK.

With Terry for starters he's under contract. He can go nowhere whether he wants to leave or not. Also with Rapopport also mentioning Terry wants north of 30 million. Lets say for argument's sake he's asking for 34 million, i think there is zero chance another team would both trade for him and give up that kind of money for a 31 year old at the start of that contract.

So if I got unqiue skills, and can take that from Microsoft to Apple, OK. But paying a 31 year old (at the start of that contract) 34 million lets say, isn't a hot commodity in the league IMO.
